  • Why was Le Dejeuner sur l'Herbe (the luncheon on the grass) by Edouard Manet so controversial? There are many reasons ranging from the technique he used all the way to the portrayal of a nude woman looking at us.

I couldn't imagine how the academy from this time period would react to modern art with paintings from the likes of Warhol, Rothko, Basquiat and even Picasso. They would probably have a heart attack.

The thing that was scandalous too is that this ordinary, nude woman is in company of ordinary men -- the implicit narrative was shocking: who are these people? Two young men 'having fun' with women, in the woods? The subject was morally shocking, and the woman even teases the viewer with her audacious stare, like "yes, what are you gonna do about it?"

I vaguely remember in art school our lecturer telling us that another reason why this painting was so scandalous is because sex workers at the time often took their clients to this spot along the river. And so the implication of the nude women was that they were in fact sex workers, and that three second woman was bathing as a post-coital toilette. But I don’t know if that is supported by evidence or not.

binge watching your videos rn :) and I think it's important to note here that the lighting is utterly wrong, artificial and stupid, more expected from a studio than from a country scene, so I totally agree with this common interpretation of the painting as being the painting of a setup, a bit, models in a studio posing for a picture of models in a studio, I think this could expand on the modern art discussion, this is like Magritte's pipe, it's not a luncheon on the grass, it's the representation of a luncheon on the grass, this also explains the disproportionate female figure in the back, the lack of perspective... is this a theatre prop? a painted mural as a background can have perspective of course, but a human being can't turn smaller...

I live in peru, and in my small town we still have this discussion, the academia is a place for conservative artist who defend colonial paintings and call it culture, the rest is just degenerates, in their mindset. Still relevant work!

I thought Manet was trying to make reconsider people's idea of nudes. If it is acceptable to view naked women in paintings, why is it not acceptable for women or men to be nude in public.
