It is the prerogative of the starter to urge the drivers to actually GO.
The two drivers are NOT the only drivers/teams racing that day, and there is a show to run.
Brad Hardy did exactly the right thing.

Anybody old enough to remember legendary NHRA Chief Starter Buster Couch and how he would have reacted to this situation?! He was a colorful character. Brad showed great patience and gave them every opportunity to go in. It was great drama. Buster would have walked far enough up, so both drivers could see him, AND ORDERED them in. If they failed his command, he too would have shut them down…in about 10 seconds after he issued that command. I am not sure back then it would have been a DQ, but “back of the line and try again.” Brad did a great job. For Pete sakes….just stage. If they drop “the big red apple” on both drivers….what was the point?

awesome stuff. I love what the NHRA, Camping World are doing with all of these behind-the-scenes, breaking down stories, better camera angles better audio the whole nine yards! This particular burndown was epic! This is one thing about prostock to get people excited about prostock, definitely one of the best duels ever! The right call was made to shut him off at 3 minutes, and you have to DQ them, because you cannot change the run order based on this.
So once again, having these segments like this is important so fans understand what actually going on that are new to the sport or don't fully understand how the rules work. When I worked on (well every class of drag racing I crewed on, lol) for example, I would always hear people ask why the fastest runs weren't saved for the final round, lol, so great stuff by doing these kinds of videos!!

Pretty simple solution is to implement a 30 second starter controlled clock that flashes the 30 seconds without displaying the actual countdown (will keep em guessing how many seconds they have)that if surpassed will disqualify both drivers. I get it some drivers have a routine going in and take longer than others but in this stage of racing careers they are "professional " and should be and are expected to be on their "A"game. Moments like this are good for the sport kind of like nascar's "have at it boys" and they are basically out to destroy their equipment whereas in drag racing all that would be crushed is egos.

I agree 100% DQ both of them, the starter showed great patience where others would not have. NHRA should hit both of them with points penalties and fines -they violated the rules, in other form of motorsports there would be points/penalties no question. As a racer myself I have no patience for kind of childish nonsense-you want to mess with someone on the line within the rules deep stage that will usually stop this kind of stuff or roll right into both beams-that always works too.

They mentioned it briefly in the video, that there's an overheating concern. The longer they sit there, the greater the chance of things going boom before they cross the finish line. If you think your car can withstand the heat more than the other guy, wait to stage and see if you can cause the other to do so as well and perhaps gain an edge via the other guy overheating before you. Hence the name, "burndown." At least that's how I've heard it explained.

It’s just a mental game. Basically just thinking you get something on the other driver by making them yield and stage first. But, once one driver stages there’s limited time for the other one to get staged. So, you can also go ahead and fully stage quick and that makes the other driver rush to get fully staged before that time runs out.

This is the reason I don't watch NHRA on a regular basis (or NASCAR). I used to attend many races, as I only live 90 miles from Indy and 10 from Edgewater (a dump). I can guarantee if that was my car, both drivers would have been fired. In this case, it was 2 Chevy's (in a field of Chevy's) didn't get to run. It didn't change the rotation of the earth and it didn't change the fact a Chevy won another Pro Stock race. Am I mad that there are no Kias running Pro Stock? Hell yea. It just gives a Nissan a chance to break into the ranks. Again, another chance for Chevy to say we dominated Pro Stock (they dominated anyway after the likes of Bob Glidden went away) just like they thought they could dominate IndyCar. But Honda called their bluff and is kicking their butts. They also lost their grip on the Pikes Peak Hillclimb once the Unsers retired. The point of my rant is this starting line debacle was stupid, Bruno might have won that day, but his stubbornness was fruitless (maybe he didn't feel like racing anyway).

Brad was more than patient, IMHO............. Buster C. Never would have let them sit there that long before he DQ'd them. If he had two cars sitting on the pre-stage and neither one staged within 10 seconds of the last pre-stage... they were Done. You didn't screw around with ole Buster, if you came to race... you better have had your "A" game on at the starting line and be there to race... and he didn't play games with you (re: anyone) either, if he told you to get staged right now.. you had better do it, "Yesterday".
There is only One time that I "kind of" remember (a Lonnng time ago) that he "allowed" a P/S "burn down" many years ago, and I'm thinking it was between Glidden and either "the Grump" (Jenkins) or Butch Leal in a final round match-up... but he only allowed it for about 45 seconds to a minute, then gave them 10 seconds for both to be staged, which they did.
Many, say Buster was the best starter NHRA ever had, and racers got mad at him, sometimes... but they all respected him, because he treated everyone equally... regardless of what class you ran in. He went by the rules, which he new better than anyone, in all classes... there was no "if's, and's or but's" about anything, and IF you had the "Kahone's" to dare argue with him.... you were on your way, and off the property.
