In this segment I will be showing you how i change my tubes in my Sony C-800g. Looking on TH-cam i found really no good videos on replacing the tubes for this microphone and for anyone looking to do this, they now have a better understanding of how to get into doing this task.

Pro tip all tubes have a fixed number of on and offs in their life. But they will not be degraded if left on 24/7 most owner of the c800 leave it on and only turn it off to patch it
I leave mine on 24/7!!!
@@mixedbyrey yeah I only turn my tube mics off for a quick re patch.
@@vinceisdead6063 I noticed consistency on a weeks use whilst on 24/7 opposed to on/off after everyday, i had no idea the logistics though thank you for the enlightenment!
@@mixedbyrey yeah bro some of my tube mics get reallllllly un happy when they aren't on 24/7 noisey and wayyy too hot on sensitivity
@@benjamindiaz1645 it's just swapping a tube dude. It's like childplay. If you're too scared to swap a tube then you deff aren't professional enough to even own the Sony lol

A friend of mine is getting one built right now but I guess he said sony just ran out of the tubes they use and he said the tubes they use are missed labeled on purpose. I sent him a link to the tubes you ordered.

What kind of socket assembly did you use ?

Just a little concerned with the thermal paste you used. When I spoke to Sony Technicians they specifically said it needs to be non conductive white thermal paste as the silver one can damage parts. But great vid never the less, perhaps you should double check with Sony and update the info on the thermal paste. There was another video of someone replacing the tube but for some reason that guy removed it. I only changed it myself once. Now need to do it again ... never changed the power supply tubes though, will do that as well. peace.

@@kofiassor2164 I think they took it away because of corona they weren’t able to produce it because shut downs, But if they do come back I think they’re gonna be higher priced

Thanks for this post. I’ve read a couple posts that claim the voltage needs to be adjusted if the Russian tubes are being used. Do you have any experience with this? Or did you have any issues by not doing this?
Sony uses Russian tubes themselves, so I think whoever posted that was misinformed.
Can you use thermal paste with the Lauten audio Eden? Or would you not recommend it ?

I’ve personally never changed it , But I’ve had a tech @ www.micshop.com swap out my old capsule for a new one that I ordered directly from Sony and than sent the mic and the new capsule all to him and he had it back to me in 2-3 weeks from the initial ship out. HIGHLY recommend, swapping out a capsule is f^%king nailbiting

You will hear alot of noise in the backround when the gain is raised.

@@mixedbyrey How long can a person expect to have the tubes last on a brand new sony 800g mike if your using it on average 3 times a month for 5 hours at a time?
@@1stopproduction298 I leave my mic on 5 days a week whilst recording people during the weeks, 120 hours a week lol and I haven’t change the tube since last year

Hey, Could you offer some advice. We have new modern Mic with a ECC82 tube. It’s a nice big open sounding mic, but can be harsh from 2.5 right up!
Is there any tube old or new that may help to soften it ?

Also bad tubes in a power supply wouldn't effect the sound the unit simply would not function power amplifier tubes operate on a complete different level from the tubes that go into the mic. Tubes in the mic don't ne biasing and have nothing to do with balancing the flow of power and signal where as power tubes do all of that
does the golden age 800g sound the same as the sony?
i heard from others the golden age sounds pretty great actually, not sure about the comparison though, i never heard it.

@@VST2323 it's literally the same. I work with both in studio. There identical.
@@tecno8335 I've also worked with both and noticed that the GAP is thinner than the Sony. And it doesn't have the pre-compressed sound of a Sony either, and while the highs are similarly open, it lacks the hi-fi shimmer. Because the GAP PSU doesn't have tubes but the Sony PSU does, it can't sound identical because it's a big part of Sony's sound. Just like the tube, the capsule and the capacitor.
@@rtdrec Acrually it doesn't sound the same it actually sounds better. Same low end as the Sony while being bright with air only difference is the GA Smooths out the top even more so it's not too bright or harsh sounding. In my opinion the GA is what a modern remake of the 800g should be.
how does the sound in regards to the original?

MIXEDBYREY Out of all the Tubes, would you recommend these ones ? Also you should do a video on how to clean the capsule ?
eBay. The 6AU6 is a very common tube.
Are the new ones as good as the old?

Today I'm gonna attempt to swap the tube from the power supply and put it into the Mic
Update! After doing the swap there was no change so my tubes finally showed up that I ordered off eBay I posted the link to the ones that I ordered on one of my other comments. That seemed to do the trick. I ended up putting a different style tube in the power supply reason being is because I had also ordered some 6AU6A tubes that GE electric made they were NOS they were a smaller tube so I tried that style in the mic but I noticed there was still some noise in the signal chain so I took it out and put the tube that I ordered off eBay and that was the one that I stuck with because of the low noise ratio and just decided to put the GE electric style tube in the power supply

I’ve been getting tubes from Sony but they want 500 per so I ordered a bunch from the Ukraine. How many do you have to go through usually before you find a good one?

@@letsstartapeaceriot I believe so. They might ask you for serial numbers from your c800g though. Tbh the Ukraine ones I bought sound the same at least that I’ve noticed.
