Fun fact: It has actually been quite common historically to use adoption as a form of gay marriage. It was legal, made people your closest relative without blood relation and usually required no significant age difference and only the agreement of both people directly involved if done in adulthood. It could also help in immigration. Of course, adopting children together wasn't possible, but even having children together would be somewhat possible if one partner brought them into the relationship. They would legally be siblings instead of children to the adopted partner, but it was overall a great option for people working with a system that didn't really accommodate or want them.

Meanwhile, most hearing youtubers don't even bother looking up the pronunciation of foreign names.
The novel (and audiobook) "A Pirate's Heart" by Catherine Friend is a wonderful exploration of a lesbian pirate story. It also contains a 'modern' pirate story that is as fun and intriguing as the one that happens on the high seas. 👍
bro I need to know more about Anne Bonny also Gráinne Mhaol is such a badass that she's mentioned in a bunch of Irish songs through history, mostly bc she rebelled against the British who had nearly taken over Ireland by the time she was living. So for example there's a famous Irish song called Óró Se Do Bheatha Abhaile and there's this whole verse that goes something like "Tá Gráinne Mhaol ag teacht thar sáile, oglaigh armtha léi mar gharda..." and it's about how she's coming over sea with her warriors. The song was used basically when the Irish were rebelling against/fighting the British and I just think it's so cool that she was considered so badass that she was immortilized in a song in a time of like, rampant sexism. I feel like that's relatively rare in history, right? Like people making an awesome woman into a sort of icon was not as common.

Hello everyone, I hope you all have a great week. Stay safe out there and don't forget you are a valid, worthy and cared about.
I love how passionate you are while telling this story, kept my ADHD butt very engaged!
I love it how Jessica takes the time to apologise for the possible mispronunciation of names when she's deaf and is completely excused from not knowing how to pronounce them (while still putting in A LOT of effort and probably not "butchering" the names as badly as she thinks).
Love me some female pirates! Anne Bonny and Grace O'Malley are great too! (pirate series? lol)
bro I need to know more about Anne Bonny also Gráinne Mhaol is such a badass that she's mentioned in a bunch of Irish songs through history, mostly bc she rebelled against the British who had nearly taken over Ireland by the time she was living.
Ireland has pirate Queen too!! So cool
Thank you for feeding my pirate obsession, this was very much needed :D
Amazing video! You should do one on Empress Cixi, an interesting, controversial and very powerful chinese empress not talked about enough :)
the absolute and utter joy of this video is the most beautiful, infectious and uplifting thing I've seen in a long time. Thank you for this 18-minute pleasure
I needed this pirate content after having just finished Black Sails.
PLEASE teach at all schools. thankyou.
off topic, but id love to see baby fashion show
I think this is my favorite one... Because I actually learned about Cheng Shih during one of my many spirals down into the bowels of the internets!
Just as when I got into my pirate phase, Jessica makes a video about gay pirates. I feel extremely happy right now 😭
🤔Anyone else wish for another channel by Jessica devoted to history? Her take, writing, delivery, and editing make it all come so ALIVE!!! 💥💖
"No, really, quite quite gay." 😁🌈🦄
It's my favourite thing
Pirates were the OG “be gay, do crime”
if you want a more extensive account of Anne Bonnie and Mary Reads wild adventures i would highly recommend the "History is Gay" podcast, the stories about these two are insane
I am absolutely obsessed with these historical profiles! Looking forward to hearing about more of my historical faves!
I love your historical profiles!! And I adore your total enthusiasm in them too!!
Learning is always more fun when the teacher is super enthusiastic and into their subject

You always come up with those very interesting stories. Maybe you should consider doing DVDs for historical purpose! It would be soooooo interesting for kids 😁 As a parent, I put my seal of approval 🧭

Storytime ahoy
I just got this book it’s called “all out” it’s a collection of short stories about LGBTQ+ characters (there’s even an asexual character!). Some of the stories are based off real people. Anyway this video remind me of this book because one story was about 2 girls who ran away from their weddings to become pirates together!
This is a very exciting video to watch while I'm hand sewing a pirate shirt!
Lovely and passionate narration : ) Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it! Was a fun one to research and write x
"Pirates are gay"
🙂
"and the best one was a woman"
😍
Honestly, love how into the stories you got 😂 Adorable, but also the enthusiasm is contagious. I’m ready for a pirate life, who do I stab
'Kidnapped by the pirate' made me fall in love with pirates
I have a book called goodnight stories for rebel girls 100 tales of extraordinary women and I read a story about a pirate called Jacquotte Delahaye or "back from the dead red" who had a girlfriend named Anne Dieu-le-Veut. And it says she was around from the 1640's to the 1660's and was from Haiti
I loved how you wove the title into your conclusion!
Absolutely brilliant! Love your videos in general but absolutely loving love love your history lessons!! More, more, more. Please.
