  • Guys! It's finally done! The living room is complete! In this video, I go over how I installed the white oak slat wall to fully conceal my hidden door. This is the last part of the living room remodel, but I plan to do an overview video going over all your common questions.

    How do you hide the hinges?

      There are specific hinges for this application. Check out this video for the full detail.

      If you notice you have an outswing door, the hinge outswing throw length affects how much of a space you need for the pivot clearance when the door opens. I'm guessing that's why around @10:35 you can tell the far left slat that is the outside edge before the door starts has a slightly farther gap. The slats still look great, but it may be more noticeable if you have a door directly in the center of the wall space that the slats cover. (one slat gap will look slightly larger if the hinges do not have enough throw length)

    Awesome idea... one thing I'd personally do is paint the back of the board holding the slats to match your walls, that way if someone leaves the door open, it wont stand out as much.

    I have seen many stat wall tutorial on TH-cam yours is definitely the most beautiful one. This also makes think what’s the gists of making pretty slat wall. From my observation those ugly slat wall have 1. Lumber they use do not have uniform color, a lot of knots and black stain on them 2. Slat without proper sanding can look quite cheap.
    I am wondering what other factor can affect the appearance? can you share your thoughts? Thanks!! Again, yours is so beautiful I love it

    • @DesignCraftWorkshop
      @DesignCraftWorkshop  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! i think it’s depends on what you’re going for. This is probably on the higher end with white oak that is quartersawn so it gives a uniform look. Also the back white oak panel adds to the cost. It’s personally my favorite look because of the uniformity and simple look that goes with the rest of the house.

    Hi!! Loved the video!!
    Quick question. Do you need do add the wood panels to the wall and doors? Could you glue/nail the Slats directly to the wall and the door?

    • @DesignCraftWorkshop
      @DesignCraftWorkshop  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! It depends on the look. If you nail the slats onto the wall directly you’ll have exposed drywall between the slats. For the door you’ll have to add a backing or else when the door opens the top portion of slats will have negative space and the backing will give the slats some support. Unless you cut the slats where the top of the door is then you won’t have to worry about it.

    What hinges did you use?
    How many did you use, the door must be pretty heavy?
    How did you cover the gap between wall and door with such a small strip?
    Is the glue sticking well since you painted everything first?
    Great work by the way. Looks very good.

      Thanks! I used three hinges which was recommended by Sugatesune themselves. the door alone was about 150lb before adding the solid white oak and plywood panel. There will be a gap between the jamb and wall on the hinge side. There isn't a way to cover it other than trying to make the gap as close as possible and hiding it at an angle using the slats. The glue sticks perfectly fine since I used construction adhesive.
      Link to the hardware should be in the description.

    How do you lock the door from the inside?

    Great video and love the final look. Got a question for you about the locking/closing mechanism. How do you keep the door closed? Is the magnet engaged the entire time and you 'unlock' it every time? Or does it stay closed just by friction from the caskets? How do you disengage the lock from the inside?
    Considering doing this to my quest bathroom wall/door and need a way for the door to stay closed, but unlocked while no one is in it, but be able to lock while someone's inside. Should be enough with a strong regular magnet to keep it closed, right? And then installing a regular lock on the inside without a standard handle.
    Thanks again for the amazing videos you put out!

      Thank you! The magnetic lock keeps the door close. On the living room side there is a button to disengage the magnet and on the garage side there is a keypad. For your bathroom I suggest using a ball catch to keep the door closed and on the inside you can use a bolt latch while it’s in use. That’s what I would do if it were a room in my house that needs privacy.

    Bao, The wall and entertainment cabinets looks awesome. This is exactly what I want to do in my basement. How thick is the plywood? I'm debating if I should use 1/2" or 3/4". Right now, my walls are down to the studs.

      Thank you! I'd definitely go with 3/4” for all the casework and 1/2” for the drawers boxes. You'll have fewer issues with cupping of the plywood down the line.

    Amazing job! Did you put any other finish on top of the Nordicseal?

      Nope. Nordicseal seals off the wood like polyurethane

    i have a door which has a frame around it.
    on the side i would like to put the panels
    there is a gap between the door and the rest of the wall.
    the door is sort of caved in.
    woukd it still be possible?

      It won’t be a true hidden door if that’s the case. You need the door to be flushed with your jamb.

    Can you please share the exact width x length of the slats final measure after cut, and the spacing width between each lat? Weve started putting up the back panels, love this project thank you for sharing

      @Consultmike ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DesignCraftWorkshop the strips are 1" x 1/2"? It looks like you placed them with the longer side facing out (shorter side against the wall), is that accurate? Big thanks for the reply

      @@DesignCraftWorkshop Oh wow didn't expect that, almost fairly big squares really. The shorter side against the wall?

    • @DesignCraftWorkshop
      @DesignCraftWorkshop  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Consultmike yes the long dimension comes out from the wall to give it a deeper look. You want to double-check the spacing so it doesn't get caught along the hinge edge.
