    Honestly I feel like the smooth pavers will be more what you’re looking for in regards to something calm and a nice foundation base to work off of. You can always add pots and plants and furniture to give the color and texture you want to your front and back.

      I also believe it matches the interior style better. Yes it is outdoors but it should all be a cohesive look. I think I will have that clean look. But still the edges are rough so it will still have that organic feeling once they're all together

      Also, whatever patterns you decide to do with the pavers can add to the detail and interest. The over all patterns like Herringbone, running or basket weave. Or different colored borders or a special footer at the front gate. Options are endless 😅

      Is it possible though that the more organic pavers feel slightly intimidating because of the actual process of renovating? During renovations you spend so much time around clean whites and the meticulous nature of DIYing and such that you get used to clean lines so lean towards them?
      Option 2 is so lovely but they might make the outside look slightly too modern? You’ve spent so much time restoring and adding character that Option 1 would look so gorgeous and would feel timeless. You have the clean and modern lines of your fence, and chimney and fresh paint on the outside of the home so that already leans more modern, perhaps option one would help to enhance the feeling of a Victorian home? ❤️ Either way would be lovely just a thought on why the smoother ones feel like a safer option! ❤️

      @@kaynothem5445 … My thoughts exactly. I just helped my neighbour using my jet washer to clean her travertine pavers which are more rustic and have different colour variation and they really didn’t look much cleaner. They seem to get ingrained dirt in them and I think the smoother pavers will be easier to maintain.

  • @hannamonk7062

    I’m voting for smooth just so that the color and texture and pattern don’t take away from the rest of the beauty of the house! You’ve already got the limestone columns and the iron fence pattern, as well as the fireplace and house itself. I feel like doing a smoother paver with less texture and color variation will leave room for the rest of the elements to shine!

      exactly, as I said under the other video option one on too many placed will be too much and its easier to clean as MaCenna showed today. On the Kitchen Cabinet Doors, try one and see if its worth it to do it yourself, but I think if you order it it will be better looking (at least in color uniformity )and that's a big project

    Hey MaCenna, I agree with mom and Romeo on the smoother pavers. Like Romeo said, "the color variation might be too messy-looking," the color variation is unknown and might take away from the pretty curb appeal you have going on now. With the smoother pavers, it'll add to the gorgeous curb appeal and won't take away from it does that make sense? Regarding the cabinets, and although we all love the finished product of your diy builds, I think, with all the projects you have on your list, maybe ordering the cabinet doors is a better option. But on the other hand, it would be nice to add cabinet door design..maker..builder to your DIY SKILLS. Whatever you decide to do, It will be amazing and I'm here for it :)

  • @willlyon5519
    @willlyon5519 2 ปีที่แล้ว +183

    The variation of the organic pavers looks good on a small, up-close scale, but I think having that much variety when they are all spread out on a larger scale will read as messy and overbearing in a space that is otherwise meant to be welcoming and calming. I think it’s also important to note the organic pavers not only have varying colors but also varying color temperatures (a warmer yellow and a cooler gray). The smoother, more uniform pavers create a cleaner and more open space to walk, which is probably more ideal when looking at and entering the property; too much detail too soon could distract from all the beautiful details you’ve already put into the house. If you want more of a statement, do it in a subtle way and change the pattern. I think both are great options, but I am definitely voting for the smooth option.

  • @christiannaripley9174
    @christiannaripley9174 2 ปีที่แล้ว +293

    Pavers: Another important aspect is the paver pattern. I am thinking that because you do not like a "matchy, matchy" look, the pattern will put a whole new spin on the overall look and hopefully bring you what you want with the smoother pavers. There are so many pattern options, which you seem to like pattern, judging on the tile work you have done.

    I’d order the cabinet doors. There are so many other projects that getting those bad boys taken care of would feel good.
    Also think the smooth pavers might safer/nicer to walk on for kids and/or older people. My parents are getting older too and can trip easily. Just something to think about! Might not be a concern if it’s not a true “functional” walkway.

    I like the smooth better. I just think it’ll be easier to walk on (and move things in). And to be honest, they kind of look the same to me other than the texture. Not everything has to be a showstopper… The limestone columns, the decking, the door, all those things already shine.

    When my parents put in their patio with pavers, they couldn't agree on the look for the coloring of them either!
    They compromised. They went with the more simplistic, flat one; laying them in a pattern. Then they did the border with the other one that had more color/texture. Totally just a suggestion! I think whatever you decide will look great. 😊

    I say go with the smooth pavers for a couple of reasons. 1. More consistent color so it’s not potential distracting/too busy. 2. It allows the limestone on the fireplace to stand out and be a focal point. 3. And maybe most importantly, the smoother pavers will be more accessible for strollers, walkers, wheelchairs, and anyone with mobility challenges.

    Option A was where my heart went initially and I’m still there!! They’re so much more visually interesting without being too much because they’ll be set as a repeating pattern it will all blend together beautifully. The darker tones in it echo some of the darker details in your home and I just feel they look so more authentic to the time period of your home and more organic.
    The alternative is pretty, too, but I just find them so boring and commercial-two words I would never use to describe your style. I worry that they’ll look ultra modern and sleek and take away from the wonderful charm of the cottage.

    • @Sarah-tw4yv
      @Sarah-tw4yv 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think in order to determine whether there is too much variation you need to look at a larger batch and really understand how much of that dark tone is in them at scale! You could have grabbed a particularly intricate piece.

    From someone who DIY’d a lot in her own home, I say order the doors. Why? Think of how much your time is worth, how there are things only YOU can do.
    With how specific your skill set is, how much would you charge someone for the time it would take you to make all those cabinet fronts. How much more, that only you can do, could you do with that time, that value? It can help put some things into perspective. Just my two cents.

    As an Italian who drinks ungodly amount of coffee, I advice you to try a moka. It a type of coffee maker (I'm sure you know) you put the water on the bottom, the ground coffee on the filter (important, the water should never reach the filter or wet the ground coffee) you close everything up and put it on the stove. In some minutes it would start bubbling and is ready to enjoy!
    When the Moka is new the coffee would taste weird so make it a few time. The Moka needs time to infuse with the coffee taste and smell, the more you use it the better it will taste. When you wash it use only water and no soap as it will also wash away the coffee taste you worked it in.
    Idk why I'm telling you this hahhah just in case you might need the information one day.
    P.S. I reeeeally love your videos MaCenna! You are literally a big comfort for me to watch and never fail to make me smile or relax. I love your house and how is getting along so so much! You're amazing

    Pavers Pros and Cons:
    Smooth/rusty:
    Pros: looks great with the deck, easier to clean if needed, easier to place things on (pots, furniture, decor) because they are more level, introduces a new color to avoid matchy-matchy look with the limestone, cleaner look, may look neater laid in a pattern than the other, may beeasier to walk on (especially for potential future young children)?
    Cons: less “cottagey” , more expensive, more “generic” looking, resembles concrete slightly more than the other option (which you wanted to avoid), may avoid being matchy with the stonework but could be perceived as more “matcha-matchy” with the decking?
    Textured/grey/yellow:
    Pros: cottage vibes, ties in colors of the lime stone and the rose pots and the black accents of the windows and fence, looks more expensive or luxe IMO, brings more of the natural rustic vibes to the so far mostly “clean” exterior, lots of visual interest.
    Cons: may look somewhat matchy-matchy with the stonework (or worse look like you were trying to match the stone work and didn’t quite), could collect more dirt in the texture or even allow mosses or algae to grow if you get consistent rain pooling in the texture (tho maybe not an issue in Texas lol), may look more “busy”, may not have as sharp and satisfying of lines laid in the pattern you showed as inspiration, may be less of a clean slate for further added decor or landscaping touches.
    I think either would be beautiful! I can see why you are having a hard time choosing! I hope that helps!

    I think you'll be happier with option 2 in the long run. It will make for a nice, clean repeat pattern and a super smooth path to welcome anyone coming up to your home! If you want to bring in a cobblestone look (and connect back to the limestone), you could consider using option 1 (or limestone pieces) as a border/edge piece on the path. That way you get a level + uniform path as well as the cobblestone look too :)
    If you did that, you could also think about installing the edge/cobblestone pieces slightly raised (maybe like 2"?), to create a nice division between the pathway and the lawn on either side. My parents have a raised stone blocks as edging on their driveway, and it creates a clean transition between the asphalt and their garden beds.

    I agree with the smooth pavers with the color as you don’t want it to be a distraction from your beautiful house. It has to be a cohesive look that is complimentary to all.
    You should build your own cabinet doors. You will do a fantastic job and know you did it all yourself. You will feel so accomplished.

      With the temps in Texas and the droughts around the world I'd definitely opt for something other than grass. Maybe fake option (also easier when they are in LA) and I've heard good things about moss and other hardier and less water intensive options.

    I love watching the progress and your thought process on the cottage. The smooth pavers could be laid in an interesting pattern and edged with the left over limestone rock, just an idea but could tie it all together, limestone leading from the pillars to the steps filled in with calmer pavers. Good luck with your decision.

    I work with a lot of natural stone/tile and let me tell you they can vary A LOT (especially cheaper ones) and since this will be in such a big area, I’d go with the more consistent coloring! Putting it in a pattern will make it more interesting too!

    Ok I think you should use the smooth pavers, here is my thought behind it because you like the texture in the organic as you know stone ages over time after a few years of wear and tear they will eventually get to that point of an organic feel and because you really like the yellow tones in the organic they actually have this brick toner or like finish you can put on top and make it have more of a color palette or look you like or are looking for I don’t know any brands so you would have to do some research but maybe this helps:)

    My rule of thumb is getting quotes for items. This will put into perspective the overall cost but also give you a basis to do your own analysis. If purchasing a detailed cabinet door is $50 but making it is $35 that is one thing… but if you have a 1-day turnaround on your 15+ cabinet doors at $50 per and it takes you 4 weeks to do all 15+ for $35 then you have a better idea if the labor cost is worth it, based on how you cost out your own time.

    I thoroughly recommend a rubber pliable style spatula for the kitchen - there’s like zero waste when scraping stuff out of bowls and they don’t destroy your pots when you need to scrape food off the bottom - we were gifted one by a lovely bakery when I bought a birthday cake for my husband and I use it for absolutely everything

      I agree the organic one gives more of a cotage feel in my opinion aspecialy with the 'messy' look. The smooth ones are for modern homes, but who am I to argue. In all fairness I would even go for more rounder paver/cobble stones instead of rectangular.

    Option 1 paver if you're doing a simple bond pattern as then the color variation and texture can shine. Option 2 paver if you're doing a more intricate pattern like a herringbone or basketweave, as then the consistent colors will let the pattern shine more! Regardless, they would both look great!

  • @debloui
    @debloui 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    Option 2 looks much more like your inspo photo. Option 1 is too “busy”, and I think it’ll be too yellow when it’s over a large area. You want people to notice the house, not the pavers. Plus rough texture means more places for dirt to get stuck.

    I think option 1 would look so beautiful with your home. It makes sense that the more organic items feel slightly intimidating during a renovation because you spend so much time around clean whites and the meticulous nature of DIYing and such. But I think you’ve spent so much time restoring and adding character that option 1 would look perfect. You have the clean and modern lines of your fence and fresh paint on the outside of the home so that already leans more modern, perhaps option one would help to enhance the feeling of a Victorian home? ❤️

  • @cecilliafalke5752
    @cecilliafalke5752 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Option 2 on the pavers. The DIY wife did a kitchen reno and ordered all the doors she needed. They came already pre drilled and with cabinet hinge hardware. You may want to look at what she did and compare. If you had a shop to work in it might be easier to build but give it a try. You may want to put all the effort in to finish them well enough to paint.

    I like the color match of #2 pavers because they have the cream and rust to unite the look from the columns to the porch. Sometimes it is not always about texture and someone even mentioned the wobblyness of the organic ones being hard to walk on. I vote for #2 and always have leaned that way.

  • @EzgisWorld
    @EzgisWorld 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think just order the cabinet doors! As for the pavers, i think when many pieces are together the color variations will match with each other and won’t be the chaos that might be expected. And since the patio is smooth, all the materials are more calm and serene, I’d go with the organic one to kind of give some texture to the area! Loved the vlog!

  • @AyeshaKhan-mc4dj
    @AyeshaKhan-mc4dj 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Honestly, I had voted for the pavers with the organic look, but now I’ve changed my mind towards the 2nd option, the smoother ones. Definitely the pavers, after getting wet, looks very different. And I totally agree with how busy and messed up it would look when it’s all done.
    Also, about the cabinet doors, you must go for it, coz we love watching you tackle new things and succeed at it.
    Lots of Love and Power 😊

    I honestly don’t think you can go wrong with either of the paver options. They’re both great for their own reasons. You and Romeo are the ones who are gonna live with them, so go with what your heart wants! ❤️ If you think it might help, you could always go back to the place you got the samples from and lay out a larger area of each pattern right there on the store floor. Even a 1’ or 2’ square patch of each will give you a better feel for what they’ll look like on a larger scale ❤️

  • @heidigresh2743
    @heidigresh2743 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    You make a good point about the variation in color. You have to have a very good eye to not cluster too many yellows with too many gray, etc. The more modern paver may be more consistent with color and easier to put down because you don't have to fuss with it and worry about the overall color.

    You could also make a slim pull out storage cabinet beside your pretty spice rack in that empty space. Could use it for overflow bottles or can drinks and it would be hidden and close the fridge for easy transferring to your fridge.
