  • As Parliament prepares to return for one of the most important periods in British history, the Institute for Government was delighted to welcome the Rt Hon Tony Blair, executive chairman of the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change and former Prime Minister of the UK.
He delivered a speech on Brexit and the current UK political landscape, followed by a conversation with Bronwen Maddox, Director of the Institute for Government.
There was also an opportunity for questions from the audience.
Tony Blair served as Prime Minister of Great Britain and Northern Ireland from 1997 to 2007. He has established the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change to work on some of the most difficult challenges in the world today.

@@trevaelverz3459 this is irresponsible. Tony Blair's Parliament held a vote. That Parliament voted in favour of supporting their Ally the US. . . Sadly it was based on faulty intelligence. @@kronossonork6994 You'd have to be someone who comes from an oil dependent country. The entire reason everyone's so involved in the Middle East is because they're sitting on top of the resource that we've built our entire civilizations around. Is it unfortunate that we have to engage in conflicts, and prop up different corrupt regimes in attempt to shape the area for our better interests? YES. The first and most important purposes of the EU were to economically integrate countries to the fullest extent so that it would not be in any of their interests to go to war with one another, and that if any attempted to inflict a holocaust on its domestic population, the others would be motivated to stop it. So there you have much of the explanation as to why Brexit is so destructive. How do you disintegrate, what was designed to be integrated, and has been integrated over the best part
of a century? Sensibly, you don’t. Take the eggs out of a cake? Brexit doesn’t give us our cake and the eating of it, it destroys the cake.

I always listen to Blair on these maters, because he has interesting things to say, and he says them in interesting ways. He always twists so hard on his points that you can see the gears behind the mask moving.
He says a lot of untrue things. Things like that remainers retain a strong European identity behind a primary British one. No they don't they are told Britain is bad, as Blair dwells on past wrongs while discussing the Irish Backstop. Remainers primarily identify as European, which was a stylish boast before all this mess started.
What is odd are his prescriptions. Surely he knows that the wind is completely out of the sails of a second referendum, that died about 6 months ago. He must also know that polls do not show a significant change in attitudes. Then he goes on to discusses how the question should have been framed as though people are stupid enough to allow the blocks to be split up to the point where no winning result can ever be manifest.
Right now the main issue is to avoid a near term election that would allow Boris to run the clock out for no deal, if you don't want that result.

" Remainers primarily identify as European, which was a stylish boast before all this mess started.

Utter rubbish. Most remainers do not identify primarily as European. Very few people in the UK identify primarily as European. I am a Remainer, yet I identify deeply not only with the UK but also England and the history of all of the nations of the British Isles. Europe is part of this identity but it is not given primacy over them, and to claim that Remainers in the plural identify this way is just wrong. You'll find that there are far more areas of grey than the black and white you are attempting to paint the world.

Blair never tells us about the EU tariffs on the goods we buy from the out side world on top of the WTO terms. Facts are costs in our shops will drop after we get out on WTO terms as we will not be paying EU tariffs on top. Even our petrol will come down as the 36ppl of an EU tariff can be removed saving us all aprox £15 a fill. Even those with no cars will see transport costs steady for years to come not jumping up every year. Time to say good bye to EU traiffs that cost us all money. Remember also if transport costs drop it make the UK even more competitive on the world markets.

      Hey Twat.
      Tony was PM for 1997-2007.
The WORLD RECESSION was in 2008.
It is well documented nothing to do with UK gov but started in US with sub-prime mortgages mis-selling.
Tony and Gordon Brown after him managed a financial disaster better than any European government at the same time.Don't blame Tony for US mess.Don't rant about something you have no fcking clue...
      YOU SHUT UP COLON NEWTON

The UK remains in Europe anyway, whether being in or outside the EU. The UK remains a fortress of democracy. This is the most important.

Sorry democracy is not alive or well but dead in UK.
UK VOTING RECORD 1997-2019 (last 20years of elections)images.app.goo.gl/jptWo4Y58RPReqSu5
While you may want Brexit and "democracy" delivered it for you.
UK democracy is a poor version of real democracy.
      2 bigs reasons...
Issue1: We don't have a fair system of voting (FPTP vs PR).
Issue2: Democracy is not alive unless EVERYONE votes in election. ie 100% of uk public.
FPTP literally ignores votes (a new parliament represents just the two main parties - everyone else who voted for a 3rd party are not represented).
PR literally includes all voters (a new parliament everyone is represented no matter how small or large)
PR allows politics to change / FPTP only allows politics to bounce back and forth between two parties - no new ideas new approaches and no new outcomes. Same old tired solutions to new challenges.
It also means a minorty will have put a party into government, a minoity will dictate to the majority how the UK is run. How is that fair or democractic.
See ref 2016 - 72% of population voted, 52% of that 72 - aka 37% of UK voted to leave EU - which means 63% did not vote to leave expressly.
See GE 2019 - 67% of population voted, 48% of that 67 - aka 32% of UK voted to leave EU - which means 68% did not vote to leave expresslyThink again mate !!

Tony Blair puts Boris Johnson, and even Corbyn, to shame... He made a mistake re Iraq, but don't be moronic and think that ipso facto he is wrong about Brexit. That is a stupid argument. Argue with him on the basis of reasoned arguments.
