What I liked about this scene was that it could have been Scully’d and an episode spent on Walsh continuing to lie and Buffy trying to convince Riley she was lying - but they did it all quickly and in minutes. Great way of handling this, Joss Whedon!

Look, I know most of the Buffy fandom hates Riley, and I'm the first to admit that he was awful in most of season 5, but I absolutely LOVED season 4 Riley! He turned his back on the entire Initiative, because (starting with this scene,) he realized how corrupt and in-over-their-heads the government was trying to control demons. His affection for and devotion to Buffy in season 4 is refreshing to watch. I always loved the scene where Buffy wakes up after she and Riley sleep together for the first time. After her experiences waking up alone after Angel and Parker, I loved seeing Riley's smiling face still right there next to her. I enjoyed watching Riley and Buffy's relationship develop in season 4 much more than I enjoyed the melodramatic cliche that was Buffy/Angel. (OK, Spuffy and Bangel fans...start hating on me! I REALLY dont care!) :D
I’m rewatching season 4 rn and I totally agree, Riley lowkey was the perfect boyfriend for her during this season. It’s lowkey a shame his arc turned out the way it did in season 5 but he was more of a placeholder character for Buffy’s love interest

My original comment said that I loved season 4 Riley, before the writers ruined his character in season 5 by turning him into what you described in your comment. Originally, Riley was a great match for Buffy. But they couldn't let her be in a happy relationship for too long, so they spent season 5 turning him into an insecure cheater.
From what I have heard, Walsh WAS meant to have been the main villain, but unfortunately the actress wanted out of her contract early so they had to re-write much of the later half of the season.
Professor Walsh was the least likeable person in the entire series. Her arrogance and her constant commanding tone really annoyed me. I can't deny that I cheered when Adam impaled her. She was to Buffy what Dolores Umbridge was to Harry Potter.
It's sad that Buffy getting completely give in to Riley when the Angel broke up with her he said that she needed someone that can take her into the light and that she can have a future with grow old with and have children she could have married Riley she could have grown old and had children with him, and he knew about her being a Slayer so she didn't have to keep that a secret it was a perfect relationship. I'm glad that they wrote him off as season 5 because of Glory would have definitely brain sucked him and that he would have been a casualty of her fight with Glory. The same with Angel if angel had stayed human after I Will Remember You Glory would have targeted him to
I never understood why they saw her as a threat. Buffy is just like them, less military, but just as bad-ass as the rest. Riley is just too much up his teacher's ass to see the real truth.
Because she asked questions instead of mindlessly taking orders. To my mind, this is a brilliant commentary on the role of repressive state apparatus (from Althusser) and how we are conditioned to behave in certain systems. The 'grunts' are supposed to do their job and mind their business, but Buffy insists on thinking critically and challenging the initiatives motives and actions.
The difference here is GIles would never betray Buffy while Prof. Walsh did to Riley. However - i know giles kind of did in 'helpless' but he did it reluctantly because it was traditon watcher test and i supposse killing ben in 'The gift' was another one. I guess i defeated my own argument here.
Walsh never betrayed Riley. The Initiative was more of a religion than a personal thing for self actualization. So if you joined you had to play their rules and not your own. That's why if you notice, the guys always spoke of Walsh as if she were their mother and not a friend.
What about in season 7 when Giles tried to teach Buffy “how wars are won” by trying to have Spike (the only other character with the strength to help Buffy fight at that point) killed

1:05 - 1:15. Every line in the show related to ppl being showed the full power of a slayer was AAAAMMMAAZZZING.
If she didn't give Buffy the faulty weapon, she would've taken the demons out and agreed they were "slightly more dangerous than a racoon".
Well, Buffy did also recognize the demons as the ones the scientists were studying.
