I agree that employees should report, but most people are afraid to lose their jobs. There is a law to protect whistleblowers from retaliation but it doesn't seem to be effective at all. The right to work laws are one of the reasons that companies can keep doing this to people. When they can fire someone for anything, how can the law also protect whistle blowers?

    • @PrettyGuardian

You cant have laws on the books that say "We can fire you for at any time for any reason, or no reason at all" and then continue on to say "Well except..." they are conflicting statements and those conflicts will typically resolve in the favor of the party in power (the employer)

For some companies that are doing this, there are supposed to do right by their employees, and yet it's fair when it's okay for employers breaching rules and policies in the first place to terminate others and even blackballing or blacklisting people from potential employers just for doing the right thing to bring this up like they're supposed to.

"We aren't required to tell you why you are fired" I've heard that before. Teachers are on contract every year and I remember my first year of teaching. I had some of the highest student achievement and they brought me in 2 weeks before the end of the school year and they said, "We aren't going to have you back next year" and I asked why, and they said, "Legally we aren't obligated to tell you." I was able to get $5800 a year in Pell Grant money, which covered all my school. Also, since I was going to school full-time, I didn't have to search for a job. So all I had to worry about was school (since my wife worked). Now directly contacting a former employee's new place of work an directly being the cause of there termination is grounds for more then just a defamation suit. Your also looking at harassment. And then you can also sue for any number of things such as emotional distress lost wadges ect. And in this case it can be proved by getting a subpoena for the phone records of the people in question you have multiple people saying they have been questioned about the person in question. Unfortunately he cant if his company did an investigation and deemed his videos are against the companies views. The thing people keep forgetting is that when you are working for a company on the clock or off you still represent the company. The crazy part is that we see this happen time and time again but in those cases people side with the companies decision but just because someone may have the same sentiment now all of the sudden the company is wrong. I'm sorry to say but this was his own doing. He probably wouldn't have gotten fired if his videos didn't contain any trackable information and events but they did and now it caught up to him. It's sad that he got fired for it but if you keep poking the perverbal wasp nest sooner or later you're gonna get stung.
My advice if you want to gripe about the places you worked alter the stories in such a way that any events described is not 1:1. Because companies can track these events and investigate them.

I have to disagree. I don't think gamestop got in contact with his HR. I believe and actually makes more sense that due to the garnered attention we know people also posted and shared his videos everywhere and because he doesn't try to conceal his identity, someone in his company came across his videos contacted HR and they investigated found that his videos went against the company's core values and let him go due to him become a liability for them. of course he would blame gamestop everyone has a extreme distain for gamestop that they will believe that they got him fired. One big red flag that makes him not believable is that after he was let go he made a video about Walmart. that is his company's client.

I don’t have any videos or such at all on TH-cam. But it is a problem with the online end of our lives. There is limited to no privacy in what happens in our personal life.
I am just a part time Twitch streamer. Now I never discuss my employment and not one of the broadcasts that I do is ever saved as a record. It’s absolutely absurd that employers feel the need to protect their own interests by doing this to anyone, without any regard or what we do in our own personal lives.
I used to express my opinion widely on Facebook, not anymore though. But I have seen people who complained so much about their job everyday, that eventually they were terminated from their job. And to top it, they actually received a phone call from a lawyer requesting all negative posts in reference to the company had to be removed or face a defamation lawsuit. The amount of damage to that persons views and opinions prevented him from gaining employment for over 5 months, and I new the management at the time. They felt it was a huge risk to hire him because of that past behaviour.
I’m in Canada, unfortunately for us there is nothing in place that protects any of us from using our own rights to express free speech. If we apply for work the recruiters are usually checking out our Facebook accounts to see what our opinions and views. I am sorry this happened to you, it doesn’t seem right to me personally.
