They are polite, the ourspoken thingy, I have no idea where that comes from -- a servant to the queen mother of Britain splashed hot gravy on her by accident, at a high table dinner -- she put a napkin over and pretended like nothing, she never said a word
I figured that I come from a family like this. We don’t have an endless pool of money, but we were relatively wealthy. My ancestors were well-educated back in the times where women in the countryside barely get formal education because it was reserved for boys who get educated by monks in temples. They were able to send all their children to a prestigious university at the time, which was how my parents met through circles of friends and families. They also went through hardships as well. Grandparents spent days working for local people, dancing to different kinds of music at formal balls. They (and my parents) were also the most humble and respectful people. They were also frugal and passed down their inheritance to my parents, uncles and aunts in their will as lands and deposit. It influenced my upbringing on how I view money and now as an adult having encountered various kinds of people, I often notice certain personality traits that people who come from “new money” would show generally. When I was studying in university (where people from all sorts of background come together) I was often looked down on by the “new money kids” because I never carried a Chanel bag and I walked to class instead of driving a Mercedes. These kids mostly come from parents who just made it rich (sometimes running shady illegal businesses), and think the way dress is what “classy” means when they would have poor manners and be extremely snobbish. I have had someone called me poor right in front of everyone in a lecture. Now much time have passed and since I started working and building my own family with a well-established and good family man, I was able to retire my parents and live comfortably. My social circles include many affluent people (who are surprisingly much kinder and well-mannered than the former) The former group of people found out about my lifestyle and tried to befriend and suck up to me and my partner now. Some of them never made a good career despite having studied in prestigious schools. Many of them are in large amounts of debt from lavish spending. Some faked their entire lifestyle on social media and became an outcast in high society once they got busted for carrying fake bags or scams. It’s almost as if they have forgotten what they did and how poorly they have treated me in the past. But I never forget. Treat everyone as how you want to be treated.
My mother’s family were Welsh aristocrats, now the money’s mostly gone, my dad’s a businessman, we live in a size-able but suburban house. My family still have manners, class, are well-dressed, well-spoken, I go to a private school.
In Alaska, 90% of old money is the person in bunny boots and carharts that city people would write off as looking impoverished. But live here long enough and you can tell by the way they carry themselves and howany people know them.
*Make no mistake, there's no old money in the Americas with the exception being the Gardiner family. The country is barely 500 years old. There's absolutely no old money in China and Russia and some South East Asian countries and Australia. Old money is entirely centered in Europe, India, parts of middle East families which were rich by trade before the boom of oil and Turkey. It's a slanting belt on the map. Europe, parts of Central Asia, South Asia and Indonesia. That's where. the true old money is.*
Imelda Romualdez Marcos' family lost their fortune when she was still a little girl and they moved to Leyte province, but she came from the Romualdez family who are in Manila's 50 elite family list in the 1950s when Imelda was still a provincial lass who came to Manila and won the most controversial title Muse of Manila. She was not yet a First Lady at that time. But Manila Society became aware of her presence and beauty, but she is considered the "poor" relative. Her uncle was Miguel Romualdez , a Manila Mayor during world war 2 and her cousins were politicians at that time. They helped her go back to Manila in the 1950s to find a husband from a prominent family. But she met Ferdinand Marcos instead. Manila high society knows this story and they look down upon her because she was the "poor" relation of the rich Romualdezes and they think Imelda's getting her revenge upon them too, because she was also matched to Ninoy Aquino of the prominent Aquino clan (he was assassinated and his wife became President in 1986 after the Marcos exile), but it didn't work out coz Ninoy's elite circle didn't like her. Imelda's rich uncle was married to Ninoy's rich aunt. That's the untold story about Imelda which she tried to unsuccessfully stop. It was told by the people who knew her for a longtime and revealed it in a documentary film and a book.
@@u-nedalgabre2240 Finally a reply from someone who knows history. Yes, she is still the epitome of beauty and she owns, till this day, the title "first lady" as nobody could fill in her shoes. I was in high school during their term and have witnessed her style. Back then, the oligarchs who were considered the old money snubbed her as well because she and her husband, the president, ruled with an iron fist. AKA, the iron butterfly. The common man did not realize that the efforts of the administration then was to level the oligarchs and make the people benefit from their businesses. Too bad one of the oligarchs owned the electric company, the media and the papers. So till this day the opinion of the people has been molded. The same as what Putin did to the oligarchs of Russia. But the oligarchs won and wrote down history as what is learned by every schoolkid after this. Her rise to power, exquisite taste and development of Philippine culture and arts just pissed off old rich people who sneered at her achievements. That was why she smartly said this as well.
Buying things that last and keeping them is very true, my aunt and uncle live in an old money neighborhood and the one couple in the neighborhood who have the most money have a few cars but non are newer than 10 years but they only have Mercedes, Porsche, Bentley, and Rolls Royce.
Even in an old moneyed family, one or two will be a black sheep, (not always in a bed sense) and they will defy age old family tradition at a point in their life. I know some whose wealth spanned generations (they own big businesses and vast tracts of land inherited from their ancestors) whose kids (when they were in their 20s) acted like crazy, they flaunt, they boast, they spend, they had cheap scandals, they flirt, everything shocking to their family. But as they grow old, most of them, not all, look back to their roots and practice tradition again. It really depends on the person's attitude and how they want to live their lives even if they come from dignified old rich families.
I believe the other point needed to be added is about quality food intake. Old money doesn't usually go for fast foods, but they prefer to consume quality foods.
The Caucasian is this way. Melanated wealthy are not. Africans are not, Saudia Arabians are not, Thai Wealthy Are Not. The Caucasian European has programmed us to believe that theory..that's who they are and their choice.
So...nobody..not one person from old money sees anything that's considered different from the normal (unflashy) tradition that they actually really like and get it for themselves? Not even young adults and teens? Or elders who probably give even less thought and care to outside opinions than before.
@@googleuser7454 It's a weird one. It's something nobody questions on these videos and if people really believe that those who have a completely different set of rules with money aren't individualist at least in the personal trait and sense of style aspects. When people who don't have that money and anonymity also rebel against these things..you have to be mistaken.
@@arieanne3507 exactly. The rich also have the stereotype of being eccentric and extravagant, which doesn't match the "frugal" aesthetic. A lot of the old money families are what keep the top luxury brands and travel destinations alive. Billions are spent there and plenty of parties go into the hundreds of thousands of not millions. The idea that most people can save, make smart purchases and be frugal and get the money these old money (and new money) families have accumulated is delusional, and it feels like there is an agenda
@@googleuser7454 Something along the lines of making people believe so intensely into something they don't actually believe. A lot of people haven't worked the internal mental and emotional stability within themselves to not completely shread themselves and those around them into pieces if they don't get where they think they should or could based on word of mouth. We don't know these lives, but taking enough to know..you can't trash talk the rich for the mindless stereotypes placed on them because you don't have enough to consider yourself financially wealthy. Then on the same hand make them seem like they're so uptight and basically mindless in the complete opposite way to the first, just to keep it. Yes. Irony. Paradox. Enigma. These are actually way to describe many people and situations in general. The exampled mindset...(in my personal opinion) I believe..slides more into hypocrisy. Or is it..because of the status..or how they go about it..? Rich are flashy and earn by being seen ..unless they're donating every cent..unacceptable. Wealthy are mysterious and stay out of the public eye. That's admirable. I actually wonder if that's where at least a bit of it comes from. "The people I've been told are attention seekers and not to like behave this way. I want to go farther. Be better. Pass them right up into something they probably won't reach because they're stuck in a lower mindset."
I know for a fact..say that I had it right now. The person society would sometimes see would be more visibly flashy because I could adjust and tune my style to myself. I'd express every single visible aspect as closely as possible to my vision of myself every second of everyday. The things I'd do would be more flashy. Because in my opinion..we're here to feel, experience, and grow..we can't do that by staying quite and following what we're told to fit an image that can change in a month..let alone 20 years down the line. You don't have to change completely, but small adjustments are necessary. I feel like this types of videos describe a standard that was the thing many years ago.
I did a 15 year old girls taxes once. She had around $4,000 of income and around $250,000 in expenses. It was a horse farm and the expenses were mostly depreciation of horses. Yes you can depreciate a horse under the US tax code. The revenue was competition winnings. Always thought this was odd since those deductions were wasted on someone with no income and that they parents should have kept the farm in their name.
I have most of the traits of old money but unfortunately I don't come from a wealthy family, but fortunately I'm working my way up the hill... bit by bit.
For me it's not really a question of new or old money! It all boils down to personality and how money (old or new) changes ones views...and how you allow it to influence aspects of your life. Thanks Alux.
@@OrbZo-n6x LOL... I was just saying it casually. Hmm...for example, if you'd like to set up a rich male or female lead character in a story, aside from the plot (romance, mystery or slice of life), the little tidbits in the video offer an idea on how what the character's day-to-day life would be scheduled. This, in turn, would determine where you'd set up the scenes and places the character would visit or the types of decisions, conversation topics, hobbies and lifestyle the character would have to make them more realistic. I hope this explains a bit 😋
Don't try to get into old money. They will never accept you, unless it's business and they can profit from it. They will rather stay single than marrying who does not "fit" and value nothing more than more old money. Most of them have been raised by different nannies and in boarding schools from a young age. That causes them to be emotionally indifferent and able to make family and business decisions based on logic.
That’s not true though is it… I went to boarding school in the UK. We played polo, went hunting during holidays, went riding in Scotland from time to time. I still have the same instructor I had 10 years ago for show jumping, even now. You talk as if you’ve interviewed millions of people and have come to the conclusion that all of them start ‘riding’ because it’s ‘new money’. All of my friends, who come from some of the most powerful families in the world, started riding from a young age. Come again?
@@tm1rt2vv8i you are also generalizing, like only the old money folks do horse riding. My point is many of the newbies do that in order to fit in with "your friends" (lets pretend your story is true lol)
@@luoma9040Riding is not exclusive to either new money or old money, it is a ‘money’ thing. Whether new or old. Oh, and congratulations you ‘destroyed’ this petty argument. 😂😂😂😂

Old money is probably that classmate in a normal government school who is cool with everyone but otherwise seems like the average student. Until one day another friend whispers to us that this classmate was dropped off in a Bentley with a driver today. Or when this classmate invited the whole class to her birthday party at her house which had 14+ cars belonging to the family, 2 entrance, 2 guard house and multilple boduguards patrollling around the house which was huge enough to get lost in while searching for a toilet.
You know what will be a good video..? What do these kids major in in college? This is what I always wanted to know cause I’ve seen them messing off in school. I was trained with the family standard yet I was missing the wealth. Let fix that!
They don't always major in something that will make money. Because they are already taken care of by the family, they sometimes major in subjects they simply find interesting.
Who knew? Never thought about it. Much, anyway. For those that are thinking of either writing of novel or screen play, you should be taking notes with this one. The bit about sporting horses is spot on. A totally different group of folks that meet on a golf course vs those that meet up to jump their critters. Like the timber of this announcer's voice.
Always a helpful video. Thanks Alux. Some mistake old money to be only with the Rich. Old money can be middle class property or business that has stayed in for generations.
Theres a different between nuevo rich and old money. Think of pop culture celebrities, sports stars etc. Basically the old money folks believe in time tested things that's how they keep their wealth
Walking is in itself a form of laisure and a investment. A opertunity to think and reflect, and to take care of your health. That is time spent on health= the long term game. There is a reason the poor is also the fat. Im not from the upper class, but from the upper middle. i see this difference all the time between the people from my background and people who has worked their way to buying a car. It seems like the poor is also always in a hurry, and belive that beeing seen in their car is a sign of status. In reality it is not.
@@Ikaros23 but not being in a rush just go's to show that your satisfied with what you have whether rich or poor (your satisfied). You can see the poor rushing because they NEED the money or they just have poor punctuality. And the rich rush because they WANT more money or they value there time and feel like they dont have enough hours in the day. Again using some of the 24 hours in a day that you have to run and exercise just go's to show that your satisfied in other parts of your life at least enough to not give more time to it and instead use it to work on health. Sadly alot of people today wanna live fast and die young if they can be rich in the process. The reason for No.10 is not just privacy, but old money people, or any person with class finds it really cheap to discuss money. They almost frown internally whether they show it on their face or not.
Old Money takes a minimum of two generations. At this point, if you are not already in that 'old money' bracket. All you can do is to build it for those to come after you.
You pronounced “garish” funny. I had to point out the fact that it’s rather comical coming from a “luxury/high society” channel. Kind of like that time in one of your videos you pronounced “Hermes” as “Urms”
Anyone down to shoot for old wealth, not because of the quantity, but because of the amazing philosophy? Like yeah, its way out of reach for most of us but like their philosophy is amazing, not all this hype FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) nonsense we got even among a lot of the "entrepreneurial" types. I think we should play the new money game but with the long term steady mindset of old money.
So true They made their money on the backs of exploiting animals, people and whole countries. Ruthless and cynical, of course they didn't want any one to be as successful as they are.
I was born with this mindset, yet peers kept pestering me until I succumbed, encouraging me to buy new things or listen to pop stuff. I like discovering indie stuff that people fail to admire until they become pop. Seeing potential where others don’t. Speaking the truth where others flinch and leave me to only come back exactly 4 years later to apologise that I was right. Seeing patterns they couldn’t. Btw, some of this doesn’t really indicate all old money habits, just the cliche ones. Lots of old money people spend their time in the most mundane relaxed but good quality fabrics, doing volunteer work.
Is that Dr Sanjay Gupta in the thumbnail?? So, old money is a CNN hiring criteria? I wonder if he & Anderson chat about polo matches during the commercial breaks…
Never met old family with prestige and wealth throwing tandrums and acting all entitled but it's always the "newly rich" in my 20 years of experience in hospitality.

Almost everything mentioned here is true cuz I know some crazy rich asian families and I'm learning a few things from this video about them
Buying things that last and keeping them is very true, my aunt and uncle live in an old money neighborhood and the one couple in the neighborhood who have the most money have a few cars but non are newer than 10 years but they only have Mercedes, Porsche, Bentley, and Rolls Royce.
I wonder if old money watches this video and go: "yup true, naahhh missed that one"
They do
Best advice i get from this video is that time is more valuable than money
I think that can be said about new money too, it’s like a trend these days I guess lol

Just a reminder wealth DOES NOT have to be associated eurocentric values or aesthetics.

It's a mindset

You are born by it molded by it

So...nobody..not one person from old money sees anything that's considered different from the normal (unflashy) tradition that they actually really like and get it for themselves? Not even young adults and teens? Or elders who probably give even less thought and care to outside opinions than before.
They definitely do. The idea that most of them are frugal is just a myth people keep passing around

I absolutely love old money.
I dont agree about horses, that is one of the first activities new money people start doing as soon the $ starts to come in.
That’s not true though is it… I went to boarding school in the UK. We played polo, went hunting during holidays, went riding in Scotland from time to time. I still have the same instructor I had 10 years ago for show jumping, even now.

Old money is probably that classmate in a normal government school who is cool with everyone but otherwise seems like the average student.
