The philosophical discussion is spot on. I often find myself thinking very existentially (usually before I can fall asleep) and my mother's advice for that is not to focus on my place, where I am, or where I want to be so much, but to think of what I am grateful for. It really grounds me and clears my mind so that I can take the steps I need to make the most of things.

14:36 I agree I think part of it has to do with fans leaning towards individual players rather than organizations. It has to do with how CS works (5v5, easy for one really good player to have a great impact on the game leads to a lot of "star power") and the instability of organizations in the past preventing people from getting attached when they don't know if the team will be around in 5 years.

  • @simdecog
    @simdecog 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

on the "Labour of Love" thing, i think it just won because more people actually play it than any of the other options, you get to pick between a bunch of options in the final voting and if cs is the only thing you play there you're gonna vote for it. That being said it was an absolute disgrace, there are many other games way more deserving of that award. (PoE was my personal vote)

At 1:29:00, Ok I was one of the people who voted for CS:GO as Labor of Love and here’s my explanation.
The game was released in 2012, right?, name me one game that people are still playing and loving, and the developers are still updating after 8+ freaking years? Look at the Battlefield, I’ve bought the one about WW1 which was like what 3 years ago, and it’s sick if there are 1K players because there’s BF5 now. CoD? Same shit. What’s else is even on the market?
And I don’t wanna buy games every year or every second year, fuck that noise. For all your hate of Valve (some of which is justifiable), we all should be fucking praising them for at least not ruining the game and letting the scene and community to sort out the shit on our own!
So yes, I think it’s a Labor of Love, maybe Love/Hate type of love, but they still put out the content, they still update the game after all these years, and they really rarely fundamentally break it (R8 cough cough) and when they do, they tend to fix shit even if it takes time (SG example).
So please… please, please, please, you two - big community members - stop shitting on Valve so much, because what we’ve got here, guys, is something really fucking special, and I’d wish for everybody to acknowledge this right now and not when we’ve lost it because Valve will see your mean comments and reactions and will actually ruin the whole shit.
Would I want them to communicate more? Yes! Would I want them to introduce more maps from the workshop on some rotation based system? Yes! More modes (although they’ve covered their ground thoroughly with Broken Fang update)? Yes!
But if anything, in this forever changing mad world I find solace in the fact that I can launch CS:GO - the game I paid for 5 years ago - and I will still find pretty much instant matchmaking, lots of players, active community, and the devs that aren’t trying to ruin the game just to scalp more profits! So please, let’s appreciate Valve for what they are - non invasive parent, who let the kid to do whatever the fuck they want most of the time and are being mostly supportive of their life choices - feels to me, like the best kind of deal you can get in the real life!
Ok, I’m done! Appreciate you for you podcast, you, guys, rock!!!
P.S. Please start your own “general topics, politics, media” type of podcast! Please guys!

1:35:45 - It was Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 because they removed dedicated servers, which absolutely killed the competitive scene at the time. Then the Steam group for the boycott had all the top guys snapped playing MW2 on launch.
As far as I know, they didn't add dedicated servers again until 2019 with the reboot of Modern Warfare. So that failed boycott resulted in 10 years of peer to peer wankiness.

Orgs can leave CSGO at a whim how can you attach your allegiance in a significant way an esports organisation when commitment is so flippant in comparison to an established sports team. As a brazilian, I have to applaud Richard’s research into our culture. He didn’t get the word malandro right but he got the gist of it. Basically, we as brazilians can’t trust no one, specially brazilians authorities, so we have to hustle for ourselves.
About the ridiculous buyouts embedded in contracts, it all stems from our national clubs trying to keep our young stars or at least ripping the most money out of European teams trying to poach them since they cannot compete financially with them.
Also Kng posted a Godfather styled pic with vsm, leo_drk, lucas and henrique, trk and cogu which has a caption in portuguese saying “we have a plan”. I will leave yall to take your own conclusions from that.

They're selling all their league spots on the cheap right now, and they did 100% mismanage the Optic acquisition. The IGC needed a win to remain looking like a serious player in the esports space, and it would bring in a reliable source of eyeballs, and therefore revenue opportunities.

I think in order to call online chess an esport, one would need to call normal chess a sport. Like it is competitive, no doubt, but a sport? I've heard arguments for many sides on this topic. I think it ends up being a matter of definition, and it won't really change cs unless tons of people run around thinking cs is on par with chess somehow, which I very much doubt

I consider competition sport, simply to ignore all the debate about how much effort is required (mental or physical)
