My buddie worked for the S. P. & loved it. Got to ride on a local with him up to Goleta with him. What a rush. Miss the S.P. I like the explanations he gives in these videos of town names etc. Best train vids on u tube.
My father worked for Southern Pacific from 72 until retiring from UP in 2016. We lived on the Oregon coast .He started as a clerk doing teletype. I will never forget the smell of the coos bay depot. Some times he had to open 3 treaties on a 80 mile stretch of the Oregon coast .That gave me lots of opportunities to ride on engines and I even got to play cards on a caboose one time.
It sucked when you had a unit with a working a/c in the consist, but that unit was not put on the train as the lead unit. One time we had a fireman. Lead unit no a/c. 3rd unit had a/c. As head brakeman, I normally would have to stay on the lead unit as most trips have no fireman (firemen today are engineer trainees-no shoveling coal). With fireman I can go back to another unit for more room-and in some cases a working a/c.
I always thought the change from Daylight red-orange and Black Widow motifs to blah dark gray made SP equipment very bland and certainly not 'colorful'.
