  • Welcome to our Loch Henry reaction! This is the second episode of the sixth season of Black Mirror. Season 6 of Black Mirror has been super interesting so far!
    Davis and his girlfriend Pia visit his mother in Loch Henry, Scotland, to produce a documentary. While there they discover the town's dark past, an event that caused tourism to entirely dry up and which involved Davis's policeman father. Davis and Pia decide to make a documentary on this subject instead sending the duo into a downwards spiral fit from a Black Mirror episode.
    We hope that you enjoy our commentary as we react and post reaction discussion.

    What an episode! Loch Henry delivered that gut punch that we're so familiar with! We found it so interesting how the technological aspect was almost the plot twist here. But they doubled down on the criticism. The last 20 minutes of this episode are masterfully written and executed. This is what Black Mirror is all about, putting that mirror in front and saying "is this ok?"
    Thank you to everybody that suggested this episode we got 2 more to go! What should we watch next? Demon 79 or Mazey Day?

      I would say definitely watch Mazey Day next. I like it a great deal, but I don't think it'd be a good way to end the season. It's a shorter episode and certainly very surprising - but if you leave it till last, I don't think it'll land very well. Demon 79 is the way to end the season.

    Black Mirror isn’t necessarily meant to focus on technology. Really, it’s more of a deep look into ourselves. The black mirror itself is the screen of the device you’re using once you turn it off. Your phone, tablet, computer, etc. you turn it off, it’s a black mirror. You see yourself. And the premise of the show is meant to make you look inside yourself and battle with your moral conscience. Which is does excellently, futuristic gadgets or not

    • @OfficialMediaKnights
      @OfficialMediaKnights  ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Absolutely agreed there - technology is a tool for a deepdive analysis on human psychology, relationships with others and the self, the ever-changing ways of our values and desires and how technology does have an effect on us as it develops. Some really interesting things to discover there!

  • @faureamour
    @faureamour ปีที่แล้ว +18

    This is my favorite episode of the season. I like the commentary on true crime. There's always been something off about watching or listening to true crime to me. I can watch a gory movie or TV show. Perhaps there's something hypocritical in that, but the fake nature of it seems duller or less offensive to me than something that affected people still alive or related to the victims.
    Also, Demon 79 is my second favorite episode of this season. But I think you should watch Mazey Day first. I might have had a different opinion of it if I'd watched it in a different order.

    • @OfficialMediaKnights
      @OfficialMediaKnights  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      This episode was truly incredible - and you make so much sense. I (Denise) have had an interest in true crime for many years, and for a long time I learned so much that I realized how mindlessly I consumed it and to do much more research before endorsing certain kinds of media that push that. You're completely correct in saying that there is something off about true crime, because a lot of times it's done for entertainment and/or personal gain. It hits differently once you think about the fact that the victims and their families were real people - people with hopes, dreams, entire lives that they lived before having it all ripped away from them. So one must tread VERY cautiously before telling someone else's story, especially since it's not yours to tell as a content creator/filmmaker whatever you are. Many shows and movies have missed that mark, unfortunately.
      Interesting recommendation!! We are definitely gonna do both, we're still trying to figure out which one we watch first haha, so thank you for that feedback!

    Denise you're right: the sound effect is indeed exactly the same as in Dark, at the very moment someone hangs himself... I bet it's a clear reference, because this episode is so well thought out and directed .
    I'm ashamed to say that I first thought it was disappointing: I thought "OK, this is very well done and really horrifying but where is the crazy technology that awaits us in five or ten years? ?"
    We have to remember that the 1st episode of Black Mirror only talked about existing technology, social networks and how politicians have to conform even more to public opinion because of TH-cam and the others.
    What struck me most about Loch Henry is how REAL what the archive footage looks like. The newlyweds before being captured, Ian Adair, at the start of the scene that Pia discovers look more real than any true crime.
    Fortunately you didn't listen to me and other subscribers asked you for a reaction to this episode! I keep coming back to comment on this video and your editing shows how much the episode speaks to you. You could also have done a close-up of your fingers pointing at the mask (it really feels like being in the dining room with Pia, right?), but there were already so many interesting close-ups to be done.
    Anyway, this episode really makes me talk more than I would have thought. I had really underestimated it!

      Right!? Thought it sounded familiar! We’ve experienced similar things with shows and movies and if we’re not quite sure or completely dislike it we have a rule of watching it a second time after a while. With a fresh mindset you’d be surprised how many things can turn around when you know what to look for. This episode of Black Mirror is a slow burn. It’s subdued in nature but the commentary they’re making is a fluorescent green! They make you wonder when if at all the technological element is gonna come into play. And bam they hit you with the already established streaming service Streamberry. The entire true crime aspect of it felt so real. And for the first time in a long time Black Mirror was holding the mirror towards itself and all of us as consumers. Well done 👏

    Side note - and I’m sorry, I know I leave a dozen comments I can’t help it lol - can I just please give you guys your roses for the aesthetic and quality you have going on?? That room is so warm and cozy and pleasing to look at even though the depth of field gives it just the right amount of blur to not feel uncanny? It’s the Edison bulb with the warm silhouette light mixed with the earth toned wall, more earth feels with the vines, the map, and the well-places pops of color from the cool toned lights, you have proper mic placement, perfect audio mixing (I can’t STAND when people set their noise cancellation to 0db, it makes me so irrationally angry), your editing is great, I just have such an appreciation for reaction channels who legitimately care about the quality of their content, as opposed to the bare minimum-ers, of which there are PLENTY lol. So in case you’re not praised enough for it, I wanted to send it your way lol.
    And also have you guys ever considered a second channel for reacting to comedy or music etc?
    Also also, if you guys haven’t seen Haunting of Hill House, tell me how much to send and where to get that on a list because I’d kill to see those reactions from you guys. Just watched this and came over running cause I saw you dove into this one. 'It's too close to home' indeed!!! Could not have anticipated when I started this episode how true those words would end up being. I liked this one because of the setting (lived in Scotland for some years and miss it) and I...well, enjoyed is probably the wrong word but I liked how they twisted this, it's intriguing, especially because it costs Davis everything anyway. And the Steamberry reign continues! I've been wondering if all the other episodes this season appear on Joan's Streamberry list but not all with the exact same titles in the show. I like that detail, it has the Callow Years too! And the John Hannah appearance was great! You two were immediately so on it, with the drunk dad and the tapes! I had some suspicions but not quite expected the full extent there either. What the mom says when they first tell her about the documentary is very eye-opening on second viewing. And her first reaction to Pia...chilling in retrospect. I was so tense during that car ride when they're singing the song, oof. 'So much space between of them' yes, that detail of Stuart and his dad, and how the dad uses alcohol to cope, while Stuart has developed that sense of humour. 'Aca-scuse me?' made laugh out loud, broke the tension nicely. I thought that scene in the hospital was going to be very different. The Dark-like score!! I cannot overstate my love for Dark and that was a super interesting addition. I was worried about them taping over the tapes, until I noticed how many there were. Which made it all even more terrifying. And the mask detail! People wearing those masks at the end...oof. And the Project Junipero mention! Just all the little details.

    • @kendrick5501
      @kendrick5501 ปีที่แล้ว

      @OfficialMediaKnights you know it's Black Mirror when the story echoes what's happening or what had happened in our reality
      - Joan is Awful is being more relevant than ever given the writers & actors are now on strike against Hollywood and the rise of AI allowing for AI-generated scripts, designs, and actors, even to the point of completely changing a scene with just AI and CGI. Entertainment and content creation is in such a bad position now and a lot of studios are somehow still telling creatives, both actors and writers, to go fuck themselves like how Streamberry told Salma Hayek off as they continues to exploit not just her, not just actors and celebrities, but literally everyone like Joan and her peers for example.
      - Loch Henry, as I mentioned before, is also becoming more relevant given that society cares more of the dramatics, spectacle, and fascination on the crime and criminal or serial killer than the the well-being of victims as well as studios making profit out of the tragedy without consent from victims and the victims' families alive and still scarred and traumatized and trying to move on from that tragedy, only for them to be retraumarized and now being just seen as entertainment figures that audiences will easily keep bothering while the criminal they've been affected by becomes immortalized to the point we have ended up actually getting stans/simps, which makes it all the more disturbing.
      - Beyond the Sea may not look relevant on surface level, but David's experience of loneliness, isolation, and depression is an allegory to the lockdown quarantine during the COVID pandemic. There's also an exploration on toxic masculinity shown from both Cliff and David, which makes sense since it did take place in the 1960s given the kind of decade it was. Despite how time has changed now, toxic masculinity is unfortunately still a thing and around right now, just we're in a completely different setting now.
      - Mazey Day may be the weakest episode in the season and a contender for one of the weakest Black Mirror episodes, but even the issues of paparazzi and celebrity privacy is still something that is needed to be addressed and still a big deal. Just now, we all end up becoming paparazzi and that's cause of the internet and social media, since we have access to cameras, we all could just sneak a picture from celebrities without notice like the paparazzis back in the 2000s. The invasion of celebrity privacy is also all the more relevant also cause of the internet and social media, thus a lot more access and not just the spread of photos, but also rumors and reports that all can easily spread like wildfire. You can say that being a celebrity in today's time is now a lot harder to deal with cause of all this.
      - Demon 79 is basically tackling on racism, discrimination, and hate crimes, all of which we are still seeing till this day, just like with Beyond the Sea, we're in a different time and while times have changed, the issues still linger and prosper in other means.
      Season 6 may be retroactive and feature technology the least, it still is very much Black Mirror given that the 5 stories have exhibited and explored to us are still a reflection to our society and human nature

    True that BM most often focuses on technology but i'd say first and foremost it's social commentary. There have been episodes without any futuristic technologies (Shut up & dance, National Anthem) and even the ones with technology are mainly about human nature anyway. So I don't mind episodes like these as part of BM.

    • @OfficialMediaKnights
      @OfficialMediaKnights  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We agree! First and foremost it’s a satire that focuses heavily on making its social criticism. Although technology is a big part of the plot to move forwards it’s not always necessary. What is interesting about this episode is that they flipped the formula. They gave us the commentary first and the punchline was delivered at the end involving technology. Truly was masterfully done!

    25,200 subscribers! 🥳You had 6K something when I discovered you last fall with HOTD. Hmm... There's still a whole semester of 2023 left. At this rate, you can hit 50K in 2024 and 100K in 2025.
    I like Mazey Day as much as Demon 79. They aren't the best episodes of Black Mirror but they're still good and I'll be happy to rewatch them with you and to get your opinion. I don't have a preference, sorry 😟.
    You do a great analysis of this episode in your comment! The meaning of the episode could not be better summed up. You guys are so smart😍. Rewatching the episode with you is like watching a sports competition with great commentators that make the content so much more interesting (except I don't like sports on TV LOL, but you know what I mean).

      @@OfficialMediaKnights I can't believe you didn't recognize Pod 😲Or else I've been watching GOT too many times... When he greets Davis yelling at him as a joke, I even saw it as a tribute to episode 1, when King Robert Baratheon badly tells Ned "you're getting fat", before bursting into laughter and to take him in his arms.
      Anyway, Daniel Portman again does a great job of bringing the comic touch.

    Charlie Brooker recently quoted saying the show was never directly about technology and i wonder if he’s saying that in response to peoples take on this Season. 🤔

    • @OfficialMediaKnights
      @OfficialMediaKnights  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmmm that's an interesting take. This season definitely felt different thus far compared to the others. To me it felt like the previous season, the technology seemed way farther into the future, and as BM took a look at how we influence technology, technology also influences us - and that in turn affects our world views, our relationships, our values even to a degree. I understand what he's saying and that is true, the show was more about human nature and how fickle we are at times. Technology was much more of a conduit to the storytelling!

      @OfficialMediaKnights I think it might be very deliberate that this episode references the very episode, National Anthem, because that one also didn't include any of the advanced tech Black Mirror has become known for. The tech side of the episode was just television and here it's a streaming service, just a minor update to keep up with the changes since season one came out.
