I've been reloading for years now, and have only used Unique and Red Dot until a few years ago, I started an "experiment" which now I can honestly say is out of control..LOL. For example, I have bought 10 pounds of different powder in the last few months, for various reasons including just wanting to make sure I have some. These powders include TAC, W231, W296, CFEBLK, Green Dot, TiteGroup, IMR4227, HS6, and a couple others not coming to mind. What is amazing me, is the cross over all these powders afford. I have several load handbooks, old and new, and also hooked up with all the internet forums I can find. A person could spend their entire life, working up loads, testing velocities, testing accuracy, and then choosing what works best for plinking, targets, hunting, and self defense. Well....I guess that's what I'm doing. Enjoy your videos. Ohh...yeah I watch hundreds of reloading and shooting guntubes a week. It's fascinating.
Hodgdon Universal is my go to. Loads 38 special, 9mm, 45 auto all out of one jug. Made it an easy justification to get that eight pound jug that'll keep me loading for quite a while.
I used to reload with red dot, green dot, blue dot, unique because I could do both pistol and shotgun loads. I love the powders but I hated the residue. My hunting partner told me to try Winchester 231 and I did. My cases came out so clean I only tumble them because of the primer pockets and I never used anything else after that.
2:26 the reason Clay's recoil impulse is 'nice' is that it can barely break 730 fps with a 230 gr bullet and max loads...(just barely makes Major PF ...if the temp is right) Titegroup is awesome for economy, needing about 20% less powder compared to .45 ACP loads assembled with 231 (4.0 gr of TG with 200 gr bullet give same plinking load as 4.0 gr of 231 using 200 gr bullet, both about 740 fps)
I like using Titewad for target loads after I mistakenly bought it instead of Titegroup lol I'm still working loads for it but Hodgdon has load data for it starting at 3.6 which is what I use it burns well and is a bit more dirty but functions very well it's around 750fps and the max is 4.2 I think but that puts it up to 830-850fps range for a backup powder if all the pistol powders are sold out I wouldn't hesitate to grab Titewad in a pinch I use CFE Pistol Powder for SD an heavy loads I also have Titegroup too all three I like using for my 45 loads I want to try power pistol and bullseye I agree with you on Titegroup being a good economical powder choice TW is bulky which is why I like using it too with both you get a lot of rounds per pound
I love a good powder chat. Thank your for your thoughts. My personal favorites are as follows: W291 or H110 - .357 Magnum, 45 Colt (Ruger Loads) & 300 Blackout Note-Performance! Good price and availability. Clean Longshot - 45 Super, 460 Rowland & 38 Special (Keith Loads) Note-Performance! Reasonable price. It IS dirty Hi-Skor - 45 ACP +P Note - Amazing accuracy and consistency. Reasonable price. Very bulky. Difficult to feed. Titegroup - 380 Auto - Note - Fast burning. Little goes a long way. Use with caution concerning double charges. Clean
I just don't get why you would say you don't reload for self defense when you control the complete loading aspect of a cartage and know everything going into it!!
Right? The only two actual dud rounds I have seen have been factory. One had no anvil, the other had two anvils which blocked the flash hole. Both of which were $1 a round premium SD rounds. When you reload, you can be sure you have a good primer, proper powder charge and a good bullet with proper neck tension. I know for a fact both federal and winchester have screwed up rounds. I have not yet to this day...
A lot of loaders just want the gun to go boom. They don’t really care about the specifics. In that case, I’d rather have reliable ammo from a reputable company focused on making defense ammo.
Because people think if you use super duper Self-defense ammunition you will not get the lawsuits....whatever it's my bear load or target load, I can't help it if that's what i used, i never wanted to shoot no one, I just scared for my life, Honestly....never talk to the police get a lawyer first
Tite group is a great powder for 9mm. I've reloaded and shot thousands BUT the downside is it takes so small an amount you COULD deposit a double load and that is very dangerous. Other powders have such bulk a double load is easily caught because the bullet won't fit in the case. I started using tite group because during the Obama years its all I could get.
I currently like HS-6 and Ramshot Silhouette for 9mm. I like the fact that they have a wider bandwidth, so you can be +/- 0.1 to 0.2 off with your measure and you're not gonna run the risk of damage to yourself or your gun. This is nice, because once you set your measure... you really only need to check it for measure accuracy every 10-20 rounds, which makes for faster reloading. They both also take a bit more powder (5.7-ish grains), so to your point... you really can't double load it accidentally.
The problem is that there is no guide for a 16" inch barrel .. the data that they are providing most of the time is out of a 4" barrel . Vihtavuori N350 in his famous shooting accuracy! my load is 115 FMJ with N350 5.7 grains .. that fall in the middle between the low and hi recommended power load . Vihtavuori N350 is the slowest in the N300 series of handgun powders. It is ideal for very heavy loadings and top velocities and energies for a broad range of pistol and revolver cartridges. The grain size (1,0 mm length and 0,8 mm diameter) is exactly the same than N320, N330 and N340; it is the porosity of the powder that makes all the difference in burning characteristics. N350

It is hard to answer what a great powder is. It has a lot to do where you come from and what type of shooting you are doing. The best powder is worthless when you can not get it where you live, right ? I love bullsey for 45 ACP and shotgun slugs, but it is almost unavailable here in germany since about 2 years.
