    In response to Mr Robinsons remarks about the bagpipes and the "ridiculous garb" I'll have you know,since you lack the education to understand such things as culture and tradition, I will explain it to you. The bagpipes have been part of Celtic history for a thousand years, the Scots and Irish people have formed a big part of our cultural identity, just like the wearing of the kilt,I am proud to be a soldier/piper, so just a bit of fair warning, if you want to keep all of your teeth, don't make such remarks in the presence of a piper.

      From a retired Yank soldier....hear hear! At the Battle of the Plains of Abraham it is said that the British commander ordered the pipes stopped. When the battle turned badly a soldier yelled if he wanted victory start the pipes. He did and they did. Legend maybe, but the military service is built upon legends and traditions and the Brits and their Commonwealth do a fine job at both.

    Despite the sound the video is excellent, thank you so much for sharing, the 75th anniversary of Arnhem comes this year I hope our so called government & the MOD have this anniversary in mind perhaps sending the massed guards bands will be a fitting tribute to the last of those veterans that are still alive and make the journey, sadly I doubt they even remember it's the 75th anniversary.

    Irish have made great out of bagpipe music. It is interesting how this Persian instrument with its unique sound travelled so far! There are Sassanid reliefs depicting bagpipe 2000 years ago in Persia.

      Bit unfair the Irish guards take their history from all of Ireland and the regiment was formed as a tribute to irish soldiers who died in wars before 1900 you must remember many southern irish have died wearing the uniform of the Irish guards not just before independence but after independence in ww2 and after..
      The regiment was never used in IRELAND so does not have a history of conflict with other Irish men
      Being southern irish myself i dont have any real problem with this my grandmothers first cousin died fighting the germans in france and her brothers at the same time were in the IRA fighting for independence i am proud of all of them ,,,,, people should not be so easily triggered i doubt the IRISH wolfhound cares

      Pipers have been part of the music if Irish regiments since the 17th century, although the current tradition of a battalion pipe band rather than a corps of drums dates from the 19th. Likewise the dress of pipers is based on that of historic Irish custom albeit a somewhat romanticized version from the Gaelic revival of the late 19th century, the Irish kilt being an invention from this time (although the saffron colour was used historically). Irish Guards pipers have worn saffron kilts and caubeen bonets since the first World War, with most other Irish regiments following that dress in the inter war period.
      I did notice that this wasn't the regimental orchestra of the band, pipes and corps of drums, so I assume part of the battalion was otherwise engaged on exercise or deployment last St Patrick's day and the Drums & Pipes with the exception of the three on parade here were with them. As to members of the Royal Family wearing kilts it is actually pretty common for male members of the Royal Family to wear kilts when in Scotland, particularly when at the summer residence in Balmoral. In fact the page boys at the wedding of HM the Queen to the Duke of Edinburgh wore kilts.

    • @aislingmichaelaoneill1028
      @aislingmichaelaoneill1028 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Samuel McKittrick In fact, Irish Army pipers wear similar, a bit more tendentiously romanticised. Note the two buffet-slaying trumpeters in the Band. That said, the wee man the OP was having a little tease…
