Federal Yukon - An Extremely Rare Delivery to Great Britain

  • Here is the saltwater vessel Federal Yukon seen departing the Twin Ports of Superior and Duluth on the afternoon of June 2, 2024. She had just loaded petroleum coke at the Superior Midwest Energy Terminal and was headed outbound for Lake Superior after passing through the Duluth shipping canal. The eventual destination for the petroleum coke was the port city of Hull in England. The tugboat Missouri was on hand to assist the Federal Yukon through the harbor, helping to give a little push as she made the turn to line up with the Duluth shipping canal. On her way out, the Federal Yukon treated us to a captain's salute, with the Aerial Lift Bridge answering in return.
Shipments from Duluth-Superior to Great Britain are extremely rare. This is the first I've captured in ten years of making videos on TH-cam. I've captured shipments bound for the Netherlands and for Ireland in the past, but nothing so far for Great Britain. This type of shipment is a possibility thanks to the flexibility of the Fednav fleet, which hauls a wide variety of cargoes between the Great Lakes and international destinations. Types of cargoes include grain, petroleum coke, taconite, and cement... just to name a few. Hopefully we'll see more shipments to Great Britain in the future!
The 656-foot saltwater vessel Federal Yukon was built in 2000 in Oshima, Japan. Her owners, Fednav Shipping, refer to her as a "Handysize Laker." She often hauls between Great Lakes ports and international destinations. Her six holds have a capacity of 20,659 tons of cargo or 1.56 million cubic feet of grain. Three deck-mounted cranes are available for loading and unloading of package cargo. Each crane is capable of lifting 30 metric tons. She is powered by one B&W 6546MC-C 6-cylinder diesel engine that produces 10,710 bhp, giving her a top speed of 15.5 mph. She also has a bow thruster to help maneuver while in port. The Federal Yukon sails under the flag of the Marshall Islands.

I’ve gotten hooked to watching your channel and Vibe With Mike (I found you through Mike). I love you including the radio traffic between the ship captain and the bridge operator…having the tug captain speaking with the ship was something I didn’t expect. Thank you for including that part.

Glad you found the channel! I try to include the radio transmissions whenever possible, as it's a peek "behind the scenes" that one doesn't normally get just by watching them in the canal.

What a very cool thing, a "Handysized Laker"...indeed! Pretty ship and interesting that she goes to the harbor at Hull. I wonder how long it takes her to navigate her way there. Thank you for capturing this for us, it's really interesting what the Lakers can do!

It’s my pleasure! 🙂 It’s about a 3 week trip, give or take. The Yukon is currently in the middle of the Atlantic. 🌊

Sweet! I've seen quite a few salties go to the UK after loading grain in Thunder Bay or Sarnia, but never Duluth, and it wasn't even grain either!

24 years old. She's starting to get a bit long in the tooth for a saltie but looks to be in nice shape. I see Federals all the time in Hamilton but I can't recall if Yukon has been one of them. I'm getting to the age I need to start taking notes I guess. 😁

Fednav does seem to take pretty good care of their ships. Some of the salties that come into Duluth look pretty rough in comparison.

Funny enough I actually caught the Federal Yukon in Fishers Landing on the St. Lawrence recently. If you are ever in that area the 1000 islands region is great for ships!

I saw another channel post a video recently taken in that area. It looks like a great place to visit!
