This ship is an excellent exercise in parsimony and efficiency. It was built at Groningen, inside the sea dikes, and is the maximum size that would fit through the canals and locks to get to the ocean. Helm and crew are up front, efficiently using the point end, and the holds are two plumb, straight, and level "boxes." To me, it looks like a "Bolger Box," small craft designs that are simple and remarkable capable. Engine of only 4,000 horsepower is in the stern where it occupies the space where the hull rises, and there is a sleek box keel for the ducted propeller. It's double hulled and is rated for ice conditions. The bow is a modified X-bow that rises to the waves instead of ramming into them. Ballast water goes into the double hull and not the cargo hold. It was built in parts and then assembled in a very efficient construction process. Note that it was built in the Netherlands and is registered there, not operating under some flag of convenience. I think it is a truly marvelous design. Start with a clean sheet of paper, and a design like this could be adapted as a sail auxiliary.

One minor correction; you gave the length as 452 feet but it is actually 492. (Metric is 149.95 meters). I also ran some calculations and it looks as though when fully loaded to its 14,300 metric ton capacity, it can move one metric ton (about 1.1 SAE tons) about 1350 miles per gallon of diesel.
Just tuned in for the first time - thanks for pointing out the special characteristics, I am always impressed by the length of the lakers! She's an adorable la petite , great lines and a sleek look for sure. Amazing she is 100' the lesser of the Valley Camp which I walked this past summer making her just under half the length of the lakes grandest. crazy enough the Paul R Tregutha pulls .5 knots ahead at double the size. I guess the Maxima is built for efficiency to cross the Atlantic though.

Donald, thank you so much my friend! It’s a pleasure meeting you. I look forward to getting to know you. I promise that we are going to have some fun together with these ships. Ask any questions you want. I will try to find the answer for you. Take care.👋👍⛴️
I Love to read the Great Lakes Pilot. Do you get it in Duluth? I imagine you can find it there. I get it at Meijer Gas Station. Be well my friend...
👋👋👋👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️
A beautiful ship. Very unique in build. Like.
Hey, I really appreciate you taking time to leave the comment about the ship. I hope you’re having a wonderful wonderful Friday and a weekend ahead. Take a look at my favorite ship video from this last season. Wait till you see all of the sea smoke on Lake superior. th-cam.com/video/mKzamgCa6zw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=_SBdoBzeu0zlbRBX
Those forward pilot houses just look pretty good to me anyone else?
I wish they would keep making the style. The old-school Lakers are going to be retired at some point and then we will not have many of these left. I love this look. Did you see this video from yesterday? th-cam.com/video/UxSG09yZx7Q/w-d-xo.htmlsi=N9G66xYYrV4-e2Es
Thank you!
Walt! You are very welcome my friend. Happy Saturday! I hope you come back to my channel and watch more ship videos moving forward. It’s all about having fun. No agenda, just chilling out with the ships!👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️
Very cool looking boat!
It’s ahas such a cool modern design!
She is beautiful - thank you.
Looks like she can take some heavy weather with that high bow, be fun to sail on her, thanks again hope to swing by in a few weeks🚤🤗
The weather should be great for you in a few weeks. Prime time for ships too.
Very nice! Thank you
Shawn, I wish this boat would come through every day
Wow! She's a beauty!!! Too bad you couldn't get a tour of her and meet the crew(?)
Dave, that would’ve been awesome to get on that ship! Maybe someday brother! I hope you subscribe and come back. The fun action is just about to start with all the ice and snow and Duluth. Take a look at the ship under a big moon from a few days ago. th-cam.com/video/v1btbLnPIBw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=pRFxxKm2h8mcrdrF
@@vibewithmike Ok! Will do and looking forward to more Great Lake action and nautical heritage vids! I really like how you provide a lot of technical data and history of these unique vessels!
@davidvaughn7752 I try my best to come up with information that is relevant to the video to make it as entertaining as possible as well
Love the classic Laker look so much since I was a kid.
It’s a beautiful ship, sleek and modern design but the older ships are still my favorites
I agree with everything that you just said. I feel the same way. It’s really cool to see the same type of design built in the last few years from the Lakers that we’ve been seeing for 50+ years. Thanks for taking time out of your Saturday to write a comment. And watch a video. All the best to you. Did you see my favorite video of the season? You’ll see all of the sea smoke on lake superior th-cam.com/video/mKzamgCa6zw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=6x1lTK4e0caXJOoa
Moin Mike, have a nice weekend. Tomorrow is our Poker night. Looking forward ; - )
What’s up Michael! How have you been brother? I hope all is well in Germany. I hope you get dealt pocket aces multiple times tomorrow.
@@vibewithmike Thank you, Mike. We´ll see ; - )
Michael, this ship is so cool!
@@vibewithmike That´s right, buddy.
The red/white color scheme looks real fresh and cool.
What a beautiful ship! Thanks for the info. That line of cloud is a weather front.
Gill! Have an awesome Friday night and an even better weekend!
That is a unique ship! Thanks for sharing. I would love to take the ride to the east Coast. It would be fun to see.
Jeff, it’s sitting right now anchored in Duluth. I cannot wait for it to come in. I’m sitting on pins and needles brother.
@@vibewithmike it's back again? That's very cool.
@jeffrosen8237 yes, it’s sitting at a Anchor right now. I’m keeping my eye on it.
I will still take our beloved freighters any day! ❤️
Excellent video sir.
Thanks Michael. I hope you subscribe and come back to my channel to watch more ship videos moving forward. It’s all about having fun with the ships!👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️
Excellent video mike
Rich! Thank you friend. It’s a wonderful ship. Happy Saturday.
Thanks for the heads up. Just after watching your video I checked out Marine Traffic. Lo and behold the 'Maxima' was heading down bound into the Fleming Channel (Belle Isle) across from me. Visibility and the angle of the sun none too good though.
Do you think you’ll be able to get out and check it out?
Great video 👍
It sure Is different! It's a cool looking ship!
Jack, I really enjoyed the ship
@Vibe with Mike ⚓️ yeah I did to, I've never seen one quite like that one. I didn't know they still put the piolet houses at the bow.
I’m glad they did. Many years of this vessel sailing for us to enjoy!
@@vibewithmike oh no doubt!
👍⛴️
Wow what a beautiful ship 👍👍👍
What’s up Larry! Happy Friday brother!
Beautiful. My favorite color
The is one of the coolest looking ships out there Stephanie!
This ship was in Duluth the last time I was there. I kept hoping she would leave while we were there but she didn’t.
You saw one of the rarest ships in Duluth. I really wish we were able to see it this year. It still has not arrived. I don’t know if it will arrive, but we will see. That is a rare bird of a ship. Also, did you see the tour on the thousand foot ship? th-cam.com/video/mvaC5q6cDNg/w-d-xo.htmlsi=_6P-rygpu7gm65F7
It does look like a laker, i have seen this vessel a few years now. And i didnt realise this until you said it.
I definitely agree with you, it does look like a Laker. It’s a beautiful looking ship. I hope you subscribe (it’s free) and come back to channel to watch more ship videos moving forward. It’s all about having fun with the ships!👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️
I appreciate the update on the length! Thanks!
Just tuned in for the first time - thanks for pointing out the special characteristics, I am always impressed by the length of the lakers! The Netherlands are favoring this construction for different vessels, they are especially fun to watch when launched sideways ... Maybe I just didn't get that you mentioned it, so forgive me: Màxima is the Queen of the Netherlands name. Thank you - I'll be back soon

Jens, it’s a pleasure meeting you friend. I can tell by your comment that you thoroughly enjoy ships too! I’m happy to hear the Netherlands is favoring the forward pilot house construction. I’ve been so impressed with vessels from the Netherlands. I hope you come back to my channel and watch more ship videos moving forward. It’s all about having fun.

That is a seriously nice ship! Thanks for sharing! Not something we see very often here in Tucson!
She's a beaut' and has a long trip ahead of her. Bon voyage.
Pete, did you see the tinted windows on the pilot house? That was cool.
This ship belongs, as you can read, to the Wagenborg Shipping Company in the Netherlands. She is named after our queen Maxima.
Such a great ship
She is beautiful
I was wondering if the ship was named after your very elegant and beautiful queen-so thank you for confirming that. I am always glad to see photos of her-I love her wonderful smile and always fabulous fashions.
Another unique visitor to Duluth 🚢
I hope to see this vessel back sometime soon
Thanx for the mussels.
Sweet ship, 1 screw pod.
Rolls some coal, Maxima!
The other ship in the class 'Egbert Wagenborg' called at Duluth, on 26 November 2022 to collect a full load for Derry/Londonderry, Northern Ireland.

What a beautiful sleek ship and a special treat Mike, thanks! What are beet pulp pallets and what are they used for??

Clare, this was honestly a great treat to see it
Awesome looking ship
Thanks James, have a wonderful Friday night! 👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️
The ship looks so sleek...it looks brand new.❤
It sure does Lori! A true pleasure to watch go by me. Very impressed.
Incredible!!!!! I know these ships have all kinds of weather gadgets, but I wonder how many Captains still look over at those flags for a wind check?
I know what you mean. I’m guessing a lot. Even when I go down to record a ship I always show your flag. That’s the real wind representation to me. Happy Friday.
@@vibewithmike Thanks - you too!
@ourlifeinwyoming4654 ⛴️👍
What an "updated" old style laker would look like! Smooth...
Well done! She's a beauty...
She's a BEAUTY !!! (So unlike the other rustbuckets of the Great Lakes.)
Awesome Mike 💪🫡🚢🔥
It really is a beautiful ship Robert
Hey I hope in the shipping year review (January?) we will see a recap of this vessel as well as happy Rover which broke records in 2023. Very cool shipping year.
@RobertBardos great idea, Robert. I think I will do a best of type of video.

I agree, you can tell it just cuts right through the water

That’s the perfect combination. What did you get a Grandma’s? I’m a big fan of their wild rice soup

Billy, I appreciate you taking a minute to say this. All the best brother.
Love this ship. I would love to see around the engine room. Thank you for sharing
Joseph, I looked for a little while online for an engine room picture for you of this vessel. I couldn’t find it, however, here is the exact specs of the whole vessel. www.wagenborg.com/ships/maxima

This has nothing to do with anything but I gotta tell you about my ex girlfriend Ruth who used to live in Duluth! Can’t make this stuff up! I have that raising lift bridge on a magnet out in the garage on the refrigerator! Funny after watching your video, it all comes together! Interesting boat stuff here !! Love the Great Lakes!!

For sure! I grew up between Detroit, Tawas, and Brimley ( up) and have family that have done a lot of historical work in and around Superior. I love the maritime history of the lakes and to see such a new vessel sailing on them is great! Like I said she has such great lines on her, a welcome sight to a lot of the work horses still on the lakes since long before I was a thought. Thanks for the awesome footage. I look forward to more and hope to get out to Duluth one day to watch them make their way out. @@vibewithmike
