How to Stop your African Pygmy Hedgehog from Hibernating

  • This is a video on how to stop your african pygmy hedgehog from going into hibernation featuring Teazel. Unlike wild hedgehogs, african pygmy hedgehogs are not equipped to hibernate. Their metabolism does not slow down enough for them to survive the hibernation period. If an african pygmy hedgehog goes into hibernation it can die of hypothermia, starvation, or both. African pygmy hedgehogs need a temperature of 72-80 degrees Fahrenheit to be comfortable. This video shows a few ways to warm your hedgie back up if he/she is showing any signs of a hibernation attempt.
In case people didn't know, the African pygmy hedgehog is a domesticated species of hedgehog. They are not like the wild hedgehogs that roam around in the UK and other regions of the world. You can go to HedgehogCentral.com to find out more about their care and living requirements: www.hedgehogcen....

A lot of helpful info.. and I can tell it was made with great care for your hedgie. ❤
I would suggest updating the title to How to Care For Your Cold Hedgehog, as African Pygmys technically do not hibernate, but are susceptible to getting too cold, and when they do, they get very wobbly, as their circulation slows down considerably (in a way that can appear similar to their European cousins' behavior during hibernation). African pygmy hedgehogs experience a condition known as Torpor, specifically when they are cold. Look into it for more info as it's a common issue for them. 🥰

I giggled when you said "exotic pets like hedgehogs".
They are very common in New Zealand, big greyish brown ones that are about the size of a squash ball (too big to hold with one hand by a bit) and smaller brown ones everywhere.
One of my childhood nicknames for myself was actually Hedgehog Whisperer (bushpiger to my family/friends... >.> ) because whenever I found one during the daylight (could be dying from age, sick, not enough food during the night, etc) I would go out of my way to get them back on their feet. some nice, warm goats milk (usually raw if we had any fresh) and possibly some boiled or unboiled eggs from our chickens. I was VERY successful in "taming" most of the hedgehogs I found day or night and even set up a little hedge-piggeh feeder (not enough food so that they become dependent on it, mind).
To this day I go out every other night to say hello to the twenty something or so hedgehogs that like to frequent my backyard, a fair few of them (all wild animals) will let me handle them fine and one in particular really loves my cat for some reason...
I was worried at first that she might lose her predator avoidance instincts from the exposure to the "top predator" (fat lazy cat), but she seemed to avoid the few cats or dogs that were willing to try a hedgehog (with limited success so far).
I didn't intend to write so much when i started this comment so ill wrap up now. Does your Prickle-Pig like to snuffle through bush/cage floor? I assume she does as I saw it in the video but, how loud is her sniffling? the ones down here are quite loud (and there's a fair number of them too), the rustling and sniffling is soooo adorable.
Edit: we do also get lots of white spotted ones and other bright shades, they look similar to yours but are not actually the same.

    • @lanamills8604
      @lanamills8604 9 ปีที่แล้ว

I laughed too because they are also common in the uk but african pygmy hedgehogs are a special domesticated breed of hedgehog so I think that's why they're seen as exotic :)

i dont know if you considered it but if you want to avoid hibernation you could put a heating pad under neath the shelter where the hedgehog sleeps and just set the temp. high enough so that they dont over heat but keep in mind the sawdust will also absorb some heat i would say the normal heat is 23 Celsius and if they get cold the hedgehog will automatically go to the spot where there will be heat. BUT nice video and thanx for the tips of hibernation.

I just got a hedgehog and I need some help. she isn't really sure of me yet so she won't do much in front of me. I have noticed that she hasn't touched her food or water. I tried to feed her but she won't eat it. I've only seen her out of her house once. I've had her for about 5 days. I hold her everyday and she gets very comfortable and active during a bath. how can I get her to eat and drink?

Hi, I need help. My hedgehog used to be very social and sweet. When he saw me trough his cage he would always get closer to the window of his cage so that I would pick him up. Lately (the last 3 weeks) whenever he sees me, he starts running and searches for a place to hide from me. (His eating, drinking, running and playing behaviour was still very good). So today I got home from work and I wanted to give him some attention, and from the moment he saw me, he curled up in a ball, I tried to give him a mealworm, (normally he goes crazy when I give him some) and now, there was no response. I got really worried so I tried picking him up. He is curled up for two hours now, so I thought it was a hibernation attempt. I held him close to me for two hours. Now I have put him back in his cage. I don't really think it's hibernation because he is not cold or anything. He was so curled up I could not even see his face (this has never happened before!) So I started giving him little massages which helped to see his nose and eyes again, but his eyes seem to be closed. I don't know what to do... Could this be stress related?

Can I put my hedgehog in a two door closet with a heat lamp, thermostat, and thermometer and leave the doors cracked open for ventilation. The reason I'm asking this is because in the summer it gets really hot in my room and I like my ceiling fan to be on, but I don't want my hedgehog to be near any drafts. Also the thermostat is automatic so it shuts the heat lamp off when it goes over the temperature I set it to and it turns on when it goes under the temperature I set it to. In the winter both doors will be open , I will have my fan off, of course and a heater in the room. Will this be okay for my hedgehog?

This is a very good, informative video, but I noticed that you advised heating up a hedgie attempting hibernation by placing her back in water. This is kind of risky because after being initially warmed up by the water, the water would then draw heat from her body as it dries.

Rory Webster they may not eat for a day or two, then once they start getting cold, It happens VERY quickly. I had a hedgie I lost to hibernation and he couldn't warm up again. Once they stop eating, CHECK THE ROOM TEMP! I tried heating pads under his bed in his cage, I tried the body heat thing but I guess it was too late .. but it does happen very quickly after they become lethargic

    Ugh....
My hedgehog wasn't moving that much last night, he wouldn't react to my touch- and he is very strict about how people touch him. So me and my mom searched up some suggestions, we used the one where I have to have a heating blanket, we had it low all night(I had him in a tuque as well) he slept beside me, I guess I dozed off because it was like 2:30 in the morning. Then I woke up, he wasn't in the tuque! He is missing in my house, we searched everywhere, it's very cold in my house, I tried keeping the fire going, then I realized that it might be too hot inside the house, he is still missing, it's very cold right now... I'm SUPER scared for my hedgehog, I had him for almost 3 years (I got him on the 25th of December).... I seriously can't keep calm, he hasn't ate in a while because he usually gets mad and flips practically everything in his cage, I feed him at night because he eats at a certain time I guess, he doesn't eat in the morning or afternoon. He hasn't had water since Thursday night because I thought he was sleeping, my hedgehog is just a tiny cute creature, I never wanted him in danger.... but he may be hibernating at this moment, I am terrified for him.... he usually gets up by now (it's like 11:30 pm in Canada) but he hasn't come out where he is hiding... I'm super scared for him, any advice/suggestions???? I really need help right now😥

thanks, good advice for a worst case if if you ever have one, do they have to stay in the Hibernating mode for lack of better word, just let them sleep to say, week (like in the night, how are you going to there not sleeping but Hibernating, it no something I ever thought of happing with hedgehogs before? as your are saying the your video, it not good letting your Hedgehog start Hibernating, but if the do, in just keeping them warm, in most cases be enough to bring the back around or is a trip the a vet, mids, drips, and all that going to be need pronto?

My African pygmy, Melvin, does best in a room around 65 degrees. He's quiet and lethargic when it's hotter than 72 or so. I don't understand why.

+Frickinfreak1 Hedgehogs do not survive hibernation. They are not meant to hibernate, they're bodies are not meant to pack on pounds and they will die of starvation or hypothermia. Be sure to have their living conditions between 24-30 Celsius. If your hedgehog shows signs of them trying to go into hibernation mode, warm them up right away. If they don't warm up in about an hour, take it to the vet.

last night it turned out my hedgehog cage was flooded with water from its leaked drinking bottle. and he I feel so guilty because I didn't check the cage. now I put warm water in a glass bottle. coat the bottle with cloth and tie with rubber. then slightly warm the cage with a hairdryer before I close. and I covered the top of the cage that was covered with cloth. he must have been very tormented last night. Poor Tom Yum. Hope he can get well soon

I highly dont recommend you putting your hedgie in any water even if warm. Only because once you take your hedgie out they will be cold as soon as they come out even if you think it is only for a short period of time. Shock is a very real thing. I like to use a mini room heater if i see my hedgie is too cold. I'll cover her in a blanket and hold her until i see she is less lethargic then use the heater on a low temperature to slowly get her back to normal. Once i see she is okay and the room is slightly warm. Ill keep the heater on a steady temp to make sure she is comfortable throughout the night.

I hear you can also throw them in the microwave on like 50% power for 5 minutes to prevent hibernation. The low power will prevent the water molecules from vibrating too erratically, warming them up without cooking them. It's important to reduce the power instead of using a defrost mode, since most hedgehogs don't develop frost.

If ur room is always cold cuz ur bed is over the air vent could u use a space heater around the hedgehogs cage on low?
