Thanks Jacob, it means so much to hear these words from you!! You hit on a super powerful song here, many thanks for your beautiful heart work lifting so many up. Love back to you!
Dear Devin, stumbled upon your cover in my TH-cam recommendation. The original by Jacob is really a special song, and I was mildly surprised by what a beautiful and competent rendition of the song you made. You captured the essence of the song beautifully you sang exceptionally well and your multiinstrumentalism in combination with your editing skills made this a true gem. How do you not have many more subscribers, you singing woodlogger? Made my morning. Thanks for putting that out to the world, you have one more subscriber. I send you hugs and wish that you successfully continue the journey whose first step I was blessed to witness here. I can't wait to hear more from you. May your channel ever grow. Love from Germany.
Wow thank you for these glowing words, it's so great to have your support! I've been lurking for many years, tried to get into film & game composing, had kids, tried to start a low-tech intentional community (with lots of wood splitting hah), but have finally come full circle back to music and really want to make a go of it! Thanks for watching and subscribing! (From a fellow soundtrack nut)
I am so glad that Jacob recognized your rendition and gave it such glowing praise. You must be grinning from ear to ear. I know it can be hard sometimes to venture down an untrodden path and face your insecurities and doubts. Staying put in the comfort of your every day may seem ever so tempting. May you find the affirmation and strength through your audience's support to venture further on the path you have begun. I can't wait to see what wonders we might find on your journey. Glad you took the first step onto a hopeful wonderful musical adventure, we gladly take the journey with you.
Dude you nailed it. I refused to believe you just started singing. Please create more videos. Jacob has a counterpart now. This music sharing talent are gifts to the world. Keep going!
Wow thanks!! I used to sing around the campfire growing up and stuff, but never seriously paid much attention to it, just focused on instrumentals, and so my voice was always really limited in range, confidence, and depth/quality. I started doing vocal exercises intensely about 6 months ago and it's made a massive difference, to the point where I finally felt ready to go public with it on this song! :D More videos coming up 👍
OMG Dave your as we say in the music business a MONSTER! Please keep posting, you're not only talented but sooo creative. The way you froze yourself in the yogi position toward the end is brilliant! Are you in the states?@@DevinMooers
At last - a cover version which uses the complex modulations of key which happen about 2/3rds of the way through Jacob's own version of his own song. Hats off to Devin, who demonstrates a rare ability as a super-talented multi-instrumentalist.
Hey thanks Tim! Loved the challenge of figuring out all those chords. I also did a cover of Jacob's Hideaway recently if you like that song! th-cam.com/video/KvLcWmTJ1Tk/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=DevinMooers
Haha spoken like someone who spends all day trying to figure out harmonies by ear! Thanks! 🙌 Your Hyrule in Half-Light album sounds amazing, Marcus, looking forward to diving in more. I transcribed a full orchestral Zelda cue a few years back as an exercise, and dang was it challenging. I was building up the full orchestral template setup with Cubase, VEP5, East West HS and HB, Spitfire Perc, Berlin Woodwinds, etc. and was trying to get into film & game composing. I really struggled with RAM issues and buggy software (this was 8 years or so ago) - I'm hoping you're having an easier time of it than I did. Mad respect for what you do!
@@DevinMooers ah you're too kind. Thanks for checking out my stuff! Yeah the tech has come a long way in the last 8 years. I've just been able to move from an iMac to a Macbook Pro that can handle my big orchestral sessions which wasn't an option even 3 years ago. Never too late ;)
Right on! MacBook Pro user here too. My recent single had 270 tracks with multiple effects on many of those tracks. Pretty mind blowing what the tech can do now. I think when Performance Samples Vista II comes out, I might get back into the orchestral sampling world! 🙂
Wow thanks Alexander! Jacob has been a huge inspiration to me in singing, and I've been listening to his stuff a lot lately - definitely rubbed off! :D
Fascinating how you are actually the first person to reach his standards in many ways... Didn´t think that could be possible. Your voice even sounds much like his. And your creative spirit and craziness is quite similar. You guys should totally collaborate!! He's gonna meet his brother for the first time.
I'm a big JC fan and this video was recommended to me at least five times by the algorithm. I think you've really done something here! Congrats, hope to see more creative videos like this.
You , like Jacob, are a very rare breed. This was insane. It blows my mind how so many instruments are played and all played VERY well. I love the jump into Lotus position. That was super cool to watch. Edit: day2 watching/listening to this. I actually like this interpretation better than the original. This needs one of those hour loop videos. Wow, never been at the start of anyone's musical journey. SUBSCRiBED! Cannot wait to see what is in store.
Ah dang, thanks for your kind words here! Love the day2 edit. :) I'm super glad to have such great feedback from folks like you at the start of this journey for me! Haha love the loop video idea
Truly, this is astounding in its vision and execution, arrangement, performance and editing! And I've played guitar for 30+ years, as well as some piano and EWI. Listening to the fills he uses on each instrument to adorn the melody reveals his tremendous taste and skill. Not to take a thing away from the modern genius that Jacob is, but compared at the same 400 subscriber point back in his past, this is a WAY larger realization than Jacob was having at that time, BUT, we benefit from standing on the shoulders of giants! If Devin stays steadfastly TRUE to this path, he will not only build a massive following, but most likely open his own doors to realize his own music and become a touring artist. I'm sure Quincy Jones would appreciate listening to this arrangement in a similar zone to when he first heard Jacob. It's clear that Devin has put a LOT of heart and effort into learning so many instruments and in arranging this to say nothing of the video editing and aura applied to his vision for it.
Just wanted to thank you again for your words of encouragement here! I was super lucky to have amazing jazz educators in middle school and high school and a culture of excellence that I really thrived in during that time. Funny coincidence - I went to Quincy Jones' same high school in Seattle! Same school as Jimi Hendrix too O.o
Man great cover - I thought it was parody at first, you have incorporated a lot of 'jacobisms' into this, makes sense if he's a big influence. But be yourself and make it your own. Great job keep it up.
Thanks Eli, glad you liked that jump! I've been waiting 15 years to recreate that shot in video form after taking a photo of it back in high school :D Next video out in a couple days, thanks for the sub!
This kinda feels like the third installment in the Little Blue releases following on from the mahogany sessions, only with the instrumentation turned up to 11. Incredible stuff, completely blown away and I'm sure this video is going to blow up before long! :)
Thanks for your thoughts here, much appreciated! Already feels like it's getting a lot of traction, at least for being my first video, but always happy to reach more folks with my music :D
Like Jacob, I’m blown away. This is absolutely magnificent. You stayed true to the original while adding your unique flavor of voice, instruments, video and artistic fun. I love your creativity and what it’s sparked by. The last few min of your flute harmonies went deep under my skin. Thank You.
Hey thanks Sam! It's funny, I've had my head in the sand musically for my whole life outside of jazz, folk, electronic, and film scores, and I don't know their music at all but will definitely dive in!
You've done GREAT justice to the cover of this out-of-the-world song. I can't believe you're new to singing! Devin, you really have an amazing voice!!! And everything about this video is ART ❤ every instrument and every shot is PERFECT and full of soul. Much love!

Thanks for the spot-on mix advice! I'm thinking of putting this out to Spotify and other DSPs, and will definitely tighten up these issues before doing that. It's great to have you here!
Dude, Devin. This song by Jacob hits me on so many levels already, but your new, fresh, marvelous version really crushed me on a new level. I adore your creativity, I adore your absurd TALENT and I adore your vision for reimagining this masterpiece so breathtakingly. You really made this piece your own. I've watched this at least 20 times by now and it still manages to make me cry. One of the reason your version really touches me is because I think I see myself in this work, or the version of self that I would like to become at one point. It is not even the sheer brilliance in your performance or the technical versatility in your playing as many different musical instruments, I think it's more the courage that speaks out of your cover, the courage to express yourself, your feelings and your identity in such an honest, WARM and inspiring cover. Thank you so much for what you did with this piece. PLEASE continue to make music. You already left a deep impact on me and - if I'm not mistaken after reading a lot of comments - also on the lives of many other listeners. I would love to give you a virtual hug!!!! THANK YOU, Devin, really, from the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU!!!!
Lukas!! Thanks so much for your beautiful comment, and I'm so glad my music touched your heart! That's a wonderful thing to hear. 😊 It definitely felt vulnerable putting my voice out there in this way, but it has given me the courage to work on more such intimate-vocal songs, of which I have many, but haven't had the combination of sufficient vocal skill and bravery/confidence to actually record them until just now. This is what musicians do when inspired by Jacob.
