    It has been a long time since I was able to study with you, Sifu. A long way from the basement of the YMCA in the early 80's. I enjoyed this video. I am still struggling through life but I still practice this Kata. Unfortunately it's the only one I still remember.

    Thank you for sharing this. I'd like to add that kata also contains a lot of Taoist internal alchemy in as well. For example, the hand over fist opening shows the combining of the 2nd and 3rd tantien which involves the combining of Kan and Li, aka fire and water. It also holds other meanings involving "smashing the void" as well. Sensan is full of energy gathering and cultivation methods hailing from Taoist sciences of spiritual enlightenment. Of course these Taoist methods were once taught with meditations and other cultivation and enlightenment (aka immortality) exercises now largely lost in Okinawa, though not in China which is where my studies have been focused recently. If you'd ever like to compare notes, please feel free to contact me.

      I'm always glad to hear different points of view. I would have been right with your perspective thirty years ago until I and others experienced some unexplainable phenomenon, directly linked to Traditional Kata. I've been a full time career martial art teacher for over 50 years. If you wish to wave your wand and wipe away the 3,000 year Asian evolution of the concept of Chi, or prana, and Fighting Form development, that's your choice, but it does not impact my research nor the amazing outcomes many of us in the senior martial art community have experienced first hand, in the least. I suspect you understand fighting quite well, but when it comes to your kata insights, it's you who are speaking mumbo jumbo.

    Seisan (13 hands ) is the first kata in Ishhin-ryu, but ostensibly Shimabuku almost took it straight out of Shorin-ryu with some subtle modifications. Seisan is way different in other two Okinawan schools and considered a high level kata in Goju-ryu and in Uechi-ryu. Being very linear, I don't see being the most important or esoteric. In my opinion, the most important kata is Sanchin, as it offers dynamic tension, which works as an isometric way of rooting and building power.

      Yes! Isn't it amazing how you can't get ten instructors in the same room to do the kata the same? This is compounded by the fact that we have at least 4 major variations of the form. My study isn't about whether someone else is right or wrong but the rationale behind the performance. Most isshinryu karate performance is off base. They are in the target boundary but not hitting the bullseye. I go into deep detail why this is in my latest book on KIKO: Hidden Power, Electric Moves.

      I completely sympathize with your sentiment. The first time I experienced internal strength principles, I thought my partner wasn’t paying attention with his grip on my arm. I also had no awareness of anything ‘special’ about karate technique during my first 23 years as a career teacher, outside of hard training. Over the last 25 years (that's an additional 25 on top of my earlier two decades of study), every single person I introduced the subject to with a hands-on demonstration, thought the outcome was simply unbelievable. If you ever come by this way, I’d be happy to demonstrate. Even better, I’ll get you to demonstrate it on me! Then you can decide what is to be believed or not.

      Most rationalizations for karate technique fall into the biomechanical dimension today. Very few ever explain karate phenomena that falls outside of proper alignment, torque, leverage etc. Exciting research in biophysics and chi, has demonstrated that some individuals have the ability to shoot photons from their fingers at will and manipulate their body's electro-magnetic fields, at will. Few American martial pioneers were exposed to Okinawan Kiko principles and techniques, fewer still to the science behind their efficacy.

    • @christophergoedecke8071
      @christophergoedecke8071  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Sandy Herman
      Many martial students can become completely baffled when they discover that a kata in their syllabus has multiple variations in existence, sometimes even within the same style. Seisan possesses this notoriety. You will probably enjoy this excellent blog discussing this subject in more length at www.ikigaiway.com/2012/a-historical-walking-tour-of-seisan-kata/.
      For many, it is almost impossible to get back to the source form. However, it is less important what the originating form might have been compared to the meaning of the form the way we practice it. Whether one starts a sesian kata with a right or left foot is less important to the given reasons or understanding for doing so.
      Okinawan karate kata were not embraced in their entirety by mainstream Americans. Much was left out of its value, leaving many American sensei wondering just why the moves were configured the way they were. Obvious bunkai application does not often reveal deeper principles of mind/body/energy manipulations. There is a Yin seisan stepping action and a Yang seisan crescent stepping action, Yin middle blocks and Yang middle blocks. Each presentation , if true to the inner principles, will demonstrate a correct formula, or packaging, for its movement sequences. Isshinryu seisan begins with left foot forward. Another variation begins with right foot forward, BUT, the right leg may steps with a sanchin foot. Another style steps with right foot forward BUT the stance width is narrower or breathing is reversed. This is all in accordance with inner principles.
      Of course, there are many who have no idea of the inner principles. So if you were to say to me hypothetically, that your version steps with a right foot forward as a mirror image of the isshin kata, I could say definitively that it would be incorrect, for it would go against the inner principles. By 'inner principles' I am specifically referring to the manipulation of chi flow through the meridians. Check out my article on Chinkuchi for some deeper insight into this fascinating subject. isshinkempo.com/assets/chinkuchi.pdf

    Was with you up until you said "bio-field." And "doubling the magnetic field."

    • @christophergoedecke8071
      @christophergoedecke8071  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +BrandonHolgersen: The 'magnetic field’ does not double. In testing over a 25 year period, subjects were consistently able to double their physical strength by means of manipulating their energy field. Scientific testing is helping us to better understand the martial behaviors of internal energy manipulations and concepts like Chi. Below is an excerpt from the work of Beverly Rubik, Phd, Biophysics, that might help clarify the appropriateness of the term ‘Biofield' for you.
      "…the concept of an organizing field in biology and medicine evokes shades of vitalism, an old philosophical concept in the West from the 1600s that was overthrown in nineteenth-century science. In this view, the essence of life is seen as a metaphysical, irreducible life force that cannot be measured. Indigenous systems of healing such as Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine and modern modalities such as chiropractic rest on concepts of a vital force or subtle life energy that is central to healing. Called by many names, including prana in Ayurvedic medicine and qi in Chinese medicine, these indigenous terms go back thousands of years. They may actually refer to something similar to the present-day concept of the biofield, which is, at least in part, based on the electromagnetic field theory of modern physics but, in principle, might also include acoustic and possibly other subtler energy fields not yet known to science. The important difference between traditional and modern views of the vital force is that the biofield rests on physical principles and can be measured, whereas the traditional concepts remain metaphysical.
      See: Measurement of the Human Biofield and Other Energetic Instruments, Beverly Rubik PhD.

      A personal attack because you don't understand something? Wow! A statement like yours highlights your limitations, not my credibility. Intelligentt martial artists that I engage share perspectives and discuss differences. Self important ones make childish assertions like yours. Did you miss that we have twenty-five years of field research? If you have something intelligent to add, I'm all ears, otherwise your blowing hot air in the wind.

    • @BrandonHolgersen
      @BrandonHolgersen 9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      +Christopher Goedecke Fine, I'll bite. We create chemical energy through cellular respiration thanks to mitochondria in our cells. They breakdown molecules to form ATP, this process produces chemical energy for us to live. Besides chemical energy there is also potential energy, which is energy due to position, like a ball balancing on the edge of a cliff. It has the potential to have energy. There is also kinetic energy, which is an object in motion. If the ball falls off the cliff its potential energy becomes kinetic energy. Now energy itself is not something that we hold onto. It's not even a thing. It's a representation of the measurable amount of work being done. If it cannot be measured than it is not energy. It is nothing.
      Therefore you cannot manipulate energy. Energy is not even stored, the potential for energy is stored either through position potential energy or due to chemicals that can be broken down to create energy (food).
      The idea that you can manipulate your "energy field," than is quite ridiculous.
      I'm also curious as to what you've used as a control group for this 25 year study? Since I'm sure this is a serious scientific project and any experiment is worthless without a control group.
      Besides this, personal attacks or no, the burden of proof is on you. It's not my job to prove you wrong. Otherwise, prove that there isn't a teapot in orbit around the earth.

      +BrandonHolgersen Fine I'll bite. Seems you have a good grasp on newtonian physics and rudimentary biochemistry......both of which are severely outdated and have no bearing on this.....or maybe you just googled "energy" which led you to use terms like "mitochondria" and "ATP". Also, you clearly are trolling youtube to get a rise out of people and trying to use terms that seem related to the subject so you sound smart. Please do some more research, or maybe try reading some books on biophysics and biochemistry that were written or updated after 2010, before trying to get into useless arguments on the internet. I don't think anyone appreciates your comments, which have not added anything of value to this video.
