  • Why Moving To Silver Valley Idaho Is A Terrible Idea!!! Amazing mountains, wildlife, ski resorts, water park, and restaurants. Trent, why would you say moving here is a bad idea? Well, there's something that happened a long time ago that not very many people want to talk about.
Moving to Idaho is a good choice for many, but when living in rural Idaho you have to know what's around you not just today, but what was there in years past.
This video covers all aspects of life in Shoshone county. Specifically what life is like in Kellogg Idaho, Wallace Idaho, Kingston and Mullan Idaho and why these places are not right for everyone.

Northern Idaho WAS a great place to live until realtors like you sold it out to Californians who made it too expensive for the locals to stay and own their own homes.

    • @LivingLifeNorthIdaho
      @LivingLifeNorthIdaho  ปีที่แล้ว

@global freedom movement I understand your frustrations but I have to say they are misplaced. What you’re staying is equivalent to saying your insurance agent made your premiums high, the bank teller charges all of the annoying fees and the grocery clerk caused groceries to cost too much. We’re representatives between two parties conducting a transaction. We have very little to do with the price of homes. And it’s also optional to use us so again, understand the frustration but research your target before firing that hate cannon.

Brent, thank you so much for this video. I had reached out to you a few months ago asking your opinion and here’s my answer. All the reasons you provided except for the EPA issues, were the primary reasons why we have purchased property there and will be building our home soon. I appreciate you being so candid and honest because there are those who would move there and not realize these things. Keep up the good work we love watching your videos!

I hate having to go to cda now. I avoid it at all costs. Kingston is in Shoshone, Trent. Cataldo is the county border. Just FYI. Great video buddy! Again, Don't move here.

I live over here in the Silver Valley. Out in the country in Kingston. It's broken into 2 sides of the Valley it seems like. The Kellogg to Kingston side and the osburn to Mullan side. They have their own personalities. I love it here . Was lucky to buy several years ago because I couldn't afford my place today at its current worth.

A lot of facts and facts kinda wiggled around but people will find out on their own if they move there. The wild animal do come right into the towns. I’ve had wolves and cougars in my yard right there on maple street. Elk have been chased down wardner by wolves. Cougars will kill any cat they see so will the coyotes. Or any small animal for that matter. And screw mase you pack up there. Mase won’t do anything for a pack of wolves circling you when you’re hunting.

Just moved back to Idaho (my home state) in the Silver Valley area. I grew up in central Idaho but that was 35 years ago. I was very shocked, in a good way, about how assertive they are in letting you know what your beliefs should be if you live here. I've been in most other states, living in many of them, and never have I seen a demographic so outspoken in their beliefs. Within 5 minutes of meeting someone, if they learn you aren't from here, they are letting you know what the right beliefs are. You are spot on in that regard. Love Idaho and the Silver Valley area.

We lived in the Silver Valley and loved it. I agree with most of what you’re saying. Generally, any really remote area is not somewhere people should move to from cities- and this is definitely one of those places! You said there are amenities there, and mentioned Walmart, grocery stores and restaurants. That’s it! CDA has Costco and winco and other amenities the silver valley won’t have, and people who live in the Silver Valley do go there for at least some of their shopping.
There’s very much still a meth problem, at least when we moved from there 5 years ago, and I can’t imagine it’s changed that much in that amount of time.
The water situation may be a bit more serious that what you put on. We had a friend who was a teacher in the school system, and the children in the schools were tested for lead poisoning.
The wildlife is unparalleled! We’ve lived in small towns across the country and never experienced the wildlife we did in the silver valley! We saw elk daily. We saw moose regularly and a bear only once, wild turkey, etc.
Where we lived, we literally didn’t see the sun over the mountain all winter long. Down the road from us they did get sun, so we’d walk to enjoy it. But if you suffer from SAD already, it would be one of the worst places to move!
If you are fit and enjoy volunteering, join the EVAC crew on Silver Mountain for discounted skiing.
Really well done video. You really gave a good overview of the Silver Valley.

I was born in Kellogg in 1983. We lived in Pinehurst because we owned the local KOA. I also Went to school in Pinehurst until around 3rd grade when we sold the KOA. We then moved to Silverton, where I then went to Osburn elementary. 4th and 5th we had to attend the intermediate school in Wallace, but junior high was back in Osburn at silver hills middle school, I believe it was called. I moved to just outside Portland Oregon in 7th grade , and actually lived in numerous places here and there during my Idaho stay. But overall I still consider silverton my hometown. The towns were small but they had so much to offer I felt. Depot days during the summer in Wallace. All the sports games. The mountain. The wildlife. Driving up Thompson pass to Murray and stopping at Molly B'damn hotel and cemetery. Hitting the sierra silver mine tour. It honestly had amazing things to do and one day I plan on taking my kids there. Yes smelter ville is a terrible place but such rich history which you can find at the mining museum in Wallace. I did however obtain lead poisoning along with my entire family. But most every one did when they swam in the ponds below bunker hill mine. One we call polio pond for obvious reasons haha okay enough about that. I liked the video but you left all the positive about the valley. I think it's not a bad place to move to or live

You really got the fire in Bunker Hills baghouse wrong. That really didn't have anything to do with dumping contamination in waterways. All that fire did is allow airborne particulates containing lead and heavy metals into the air. The dumping of mine tails happened from the late 1800's until they were forced to build impoundment ponds

It is a great state, went to college in Pocatello, 1971 to 75, worked there for several years, then my husband's company moved him to Oregon, we dearly miss Idaho.
Getting ready to go back to my husband's reunion in Kellogg this coming month.
We have considered moving back to the area, but since we are in our 70s, we will stay put.

We moved to Wallace from suburban Seattle in 2019. We wanted to leave Seattle behind, and that's what you have to do if you come here: Don't bring your baggage with you, or your West Coast politics. You have to want to become part of the community, rather than moving in and changing its character.
Environmentally, things have been pretty well remediated. Socially, people are either nice or leave you alone. I grew up in a small Midwestern town, so I'm kind of accustomed to being in a fishbowl, at least as compared with a bigger city.
The housing situation isn't great. We got here before property values ballooned. In Wallace, people flip fixers and turn them into AirBNBs instead of living here and being part of the community, which is kind of sad and doesn't help the local economy, other than by way of property taxes.
Not much in the way of good-paying work, either. I was able to bring my job with me. Not everyone can.
Meth is an issue, which obviously contributes to the crime.
Definitely pros and cons. But if you really want to make it here, if there's a will, there's a way.

My first shot is in a safe direction( no homes or people)counting on the bang to cause the animal to run away. So far that is what has happened, but, if needed the follow up will be at the animal. The animal will then be butchered and eaten so as to not go to waste. I will give an account to fish and game that my life was in danger and am willing to pay what ever fees and fines I need to. due to family members medical issues I am limited to being within walking distance of shopping and I would love to be perhaps on the edge of a small town. Ideally having a more rural or forest-y area but still close to some stores and such is what I'm looking for but I know that is a tall order. These little towns to seem to be the best route for me to achieve that but maybe I need to just give up on the rural side of the equation and just find something with that small town feel and look that offers walking distance to stores and shops. I want to be out in the woods on a creek but my family needs to be close to services.
I don't find the other parts of the state appealing in terms of geography. Coming from western WA. I want the greenery and waterways of the north. Lastly price IS a big factor so I'm looking for a market with properties still under $350k for a modest home. I would love a fixer-upper and could even convert a barn or shop to a house if it has water, septic/sewer, and electricity to it.
I thought this area was awesome a couple years ago but now it's as expensive as everywhere else, and I'd kind of like to eat the fish I catch and trust the spring water to drink.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I think any health risks posed are to children at the specific sites that were contaminated in the silver valley. According to the authorities having jurisdiction on this subject, anything that flowed down river landed at the bottom of the lake and only poses a threat if you’re eating multiple fish out of the lake a month.

Trent, I come from a very small town, smaller than these places, we don't even have a gas station, and what you say about people being hateful and standoffish towards rich people is totally not the case here. We treat everyone with respect, regardless of their economic status, until they prove not worthy of that respect. I can't even relate to what you say in this video, in fact it really turns me off to Idaho, sounds like it's full of a bunch of small minded, chip on their shoulder, tribalistic jacka$$es. I was actually strongly contemplating moving to Idaho, I'm ultra conservative/libertarian, and love the outdoors and the Rocky Mountains, but watching your videos is giving me strong second thoughts about the idea. I have no idea why I went down this rabbit hole of North Idaho today. I grew up there and so maybe I've feeling nostalgic for some reason. Anyways, I just wanted to reply to your request for some input in the comments. NOTE This is coming from a person who grew up and lived in Pinehurst:
    - Very true that flashing money gets you kind of "hated" on, which is weird since Dave Smith motors is there and they have some NICE cars rolling around at times. Multiple Dodge Vipers and Nice Corvettes have been around over the years and is only getting more common with the money coming in for the higher-end remodel of Silver Mountain.
    - Schools are no good and you get funneled into one middle school and one high school (for the Kellogg area, Wallace has their own schools that I don't know much about but is probably similar). So you pretty much know everyone and it follows you throughout your entire school years.
    - Silver mountain is awesome, but expensive enough nowadays to not really be for the locals to enjoy.
    - Crime rates: Yeah it's overall pretty safe, I've never felt really unsafe in the Silver Valley because everyone knows everyone for the most part.
    - Raising a family there: it's safe, but there's NOTHING really to do. Kids get bored, end up partying up the North Fork river etc. So keep that in mind. Honestly, CDA is much better and where most of the people "escape" to. Besides, if you need to run to Target/Costco/really any big store, you're going to be making the 30-60 minute trek to CDA anyways.
    - The big bad issue: Also want to add, they had smelting stacks that were blowing contaminants all over the valley without filtration after that fire at the filtration center. So that didn't help with the issue. However, my dad grew up in Smelterville so the ground there would probably be the most contaminated (it was home to the Bunker Hill Smelting Complex, hence the name). He's still kicking and healthy after all the years playing out in contaminated dirt so... Good thing for people to know though because it can't be a good thing.

My parents are buried in a small cemetery near Pinehurst and I try to get over from Seattle to check on conditions yearly. I must say that the biggest problem I encounter is dining out. There are so few places to choose from and they tend to close very earvy compared to big town standards. In fact, everything closes up early. I hope that the Kellogg area can attract a few nice restaurants and entertainment venues so the skiers can also have more choice and more to do to keep them in Kellogg. As it is now there is NO entertainment whatsoever for those times when not on the mountain. You didn't go into the political issues for someone moving in that is not of like mind or political opinion. Or sexual preference, or ethnicity. Judging from events there in the last few years , harassment of those "outsiders" happens.

I moved to Wallace a year ago. It has a good atmosphere compared to its past history. I work part time in Kellogg. Kellogg is a quaint little town in appearance, BUT... too many people with drug problems there. Cannot believe what I am seeing and dealing with. It is enough that I am thinking about retiring elsewhere, but where to go when all too many generations are getting addicted and screwed up on drugs....Don't get me wrong, there are some good people there with some good ethics, but not impressed with the percentage of bad ones.

Being from the area and having lived in various places all throughout North Idaho. This is the way it is ruined by realtors! Take a look at Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Go through places like Rathdrum, and look at all of the housing developments! Look at the outrageous prices! How do you think you’re going to support yourself in Idaho? There is no way the typical family with debt will 1:07 1:07 1:07 make it in spite of how much they made on the sale of their previous home in places like California! In many of these places, the minimum of 5 acres with a Home on it is $500,000 or more! Add that to one or two vehicle payments, credit card payments, and student loans exclamation. You cannot support yourself up there for very long in this manner! And all these outsiders, yes, I will call them outsiders, bring their radical ideas with them! They get into County commissions, city councils in the ruin the area! There simply are not enough high-paying jobs in those areas to support the massive numbers of people that have moved up there.

This area is definitely NOT for everyone. He was being pretty nice about the local people and their alcohol/meth problems and the overall attitude towards anyone from out of state or even out of town. To say that most are narrow minded is an understatement, to be sure. Not to say that the Silver Valley doesn't have it's charm, because it most certainly does. But beware that this area may survive on tourism, but they do not welcome those tourists to become locals. Despite the fact that most of them are transplants from CA, they seem to hate Californians openly, without a hint of irony. The food is good, as long as you stick to standard "American" food... like burgers, steak, potatoes and such. If you see a restaurant advertising something like Mexican food or Chinese food, I will say that you will be sorry. Even the pizza out there gets only as good as the Red Baron or Stouffer's. The area has a very little diversity of cultures and locals are not afraid to stare and point if you look out of place. The real charm of this area is the country side. There are not a lot of people and plenty of space to spread out, which is good since most of the types that do live out here are not very social or just not very good at being social (without alcohol). But, I would agree with his assessment. If you are thinking about moving here, don't. It most likely is not for you, and you wouldn't like it. And it probably wouldn't like you.
