Should you trust unanimous decisions? - Derek Abbott

    Imagine a police lineup where ten witnesses are asked to identify a bank robber they glimpsed fleeing the scene. If six of them pick the same person, there’s a good chance that’s the culprit. And if all ten do, you might think the case is rock solid. But sometimes, the closer you start to get to total agreement, the less reliable the result becomes. Derek Abbott explains the paradox of unanimity.

      +Christoffer113 it's definitely not the main reason I oppose the death penalty but actually the amount of times the wrong person is sentenced is surprisingly high. Different studies range from about 2-10% of convictions are wrong. Even 2% seems high as far as I'm concerned. At the end of the day I don't think anyone has the right to take another's life.

    That Saddam election was hilarious. The person who was in charge of releasing the news said in the press conference "I told the president that we should say the votes were not 100% but 98% or 99% to seem more believable. The president said 'no' let the true numbers show the results." And honestly, he was right. People that voted "No" ended up dead or missing limbs. My family was required to vote, as was everyone, but they left it blank. The person reading the results ended up saying "Yes" anyways. Got to love a dictatorship.

      Okay then. No government in the world has been voted democratically. But in their defense, apart from old Greek times, no government has. However, if you are trying to compare a dictator giving you a slip with "Yes/No" on it to actual voting process in the West. You are sorely mistaken. Because while you don't have much control over government, you still voted to elect congressmen. Which sort of makes you feel good without really making a difference. And I shall end this with I was just sharing a story. Not trying to discuss the legitimacy of voting everywhere. (Personally, I think people are chosen to lead from the ages before 10 and carved into the leaders they need to be by whomever actually runs the world. Person or organization.)

    • @PatrickVu3110
      @PatrickVu3110 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Kamel, K see? voting doesn't change shit unless it affects right ones. let's make an example, ok not 100%, but what if 95% of the population decide to vote for saddam, and you in the group of 5% not vote for saddam. so what do you think what other sides thinking about others? like the 95% will think "we are the majority, you should follow us" the 5% "the election is bs" and in the end, it doesnt change anything. now the right ones as i said early are, in this case, super power foreign countries, right? they saw the opportunity and they took it. and do they vote? in your voting? to decide what ways to govern your country? no, fucking no. why would they do that? remember, voting doesnt do shit. It's just an illusion. so in my opinion, just get rid of the voting example in this video because it doesnt make sense

    my history teacher talked about this in class. He told us he was walking home one night and he saw a silhouette of a man on as he crossed a bridge. Now this man had been reported missing and the last time he was seen was him going to that bridge. So my history teacher went to the police and said he'd seen a man. They then asked him if the man was wearing a ski mask, as he was wearing that the last time he was seen by anyone else. My teacher tried to picture to man again, and this time he pictured him with a ski mask. He was about to tell the police that he was wearing one, when he realised that he was probably imagining it, so he told them he didn't know.

    If you compare the stories of two people questioned in relation to a crime and the stories match up perfectly, with no variance, nor difference in details, then you wouldn't conclude they must be telling the truth. Quite the opposite, you'd realized they had colluded and rehearsed every detail.
    Perfection in a messy world should be met with skepticism.

  • @NXeta
    @NXeta 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1397

    An example of the unanimous witnesses with false accuracy can be that on the day of a crime, the criminal wore a checkered shirt and thick rimmed glasses. Then when it comes to the day of the police line up, an innocent unlucky lad so happened to wear a checkered shirt and glasses as well, while the true criminal took off his glasses and wore something completely different, he could even have gotten a haircut by then as well. The 10 witnesses with only catching a glimpse of the crime, then all solidly believe the culprit they are pointing at matches the person they saw on the day of the crime, when in reality, their subjection has been distorted because of appearance.

      "That has nothing to do with whether it is a unanimous agreement or not" the entire video has nothing to do with unanimous agreement and everything to do with unconsidered assumptions. Such as the assumption that your judgement is accurate or merely free of systemic errors. You should consider results suspect regardless of whether or not they are unanimous, especially since decent con-men won't use unanimous results. Instead, you'll get a "close" election 60-40. It's all the same if the outcome is independent of public opinion.

    • @georgplaz
      @georgplaz 4 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      I think a more probable example is, if there is one person in the lign-up that maybe looks less trustworthy. Our brains unconsciously "asses" how trustworthy someone looks and act accordingly.
      For example, people with asymmetry in their faces seem less trustworthy. There are also racial biases and lots more.

    When I was working as a waitress in high school I was sent to a course about what to do if the club was held up or robbed and one of the things the cop drilled into us is to NEVER talk to other witnesses at the scene of the crime. Go away quietly and write down what you remember right at that second free from anyone else's opinions. NO matter how unhelpful or scattered it might seem at the time.
    Humans tend to come together after a scary event to come to a group decision about what happened and what people look like and in the confusion and adrenaline it is often wrong. People that didn't get a good look might get so vocal about what they think they saw that someone who had a good detailed look might change their own story and begin insisting that they saw something they didn't.
    If everyone can pick out the same person in a lineup and they all talked beforehand- it is highly likely they arrived at a group decision on what the attacker looked like and aren't relying on their own memories.

      +Евгений Фуко Well, democracy is just putting representatives on papers. What is meaningful is the way you count them.
      A good way would be to give order to the lists (+0, +1, +2,...) and summing up will take the least hatable politician on the job.
      A better way would be to weight your vote according to your actual knowledge of the candidate and the chair he wants. But, let's face it, we can't quantify that.
      Though, I'm also convinced that everything ends up evening out because politicians lack ideas, they need to observe and copy what others do.

    This is a pretty sad but true story. So I had this cousin who had stomach problems for a couple of years but his parents didn't really see it as a big problem (assuming it was just poisoned food)so, they never checked on it. After my cousin got to the point it was crucial, his parents finally takes action and asked his mother's aunt. This aunt had a theory that he's going to be okay and asked 10 people (which one of them was a really smart doctor my father knew) and 3 people including the smart doctor said it was false. Since 7 people believed it, the parents believed it too but turns out the following week it got worse and my cousin died. (Also, till this day they never know what the cause was) So, I'm never going to believe that if something has a more votes than other it's the true/better option until I see the facts.

    • @TheKYLEdavid
      @TheKYLEdavid 7 ปีที่แล้ว +87

      There could still be an inherent flaw that has nothing to do with communication.
      For example, let's assume that they do a police line-up in which the real robber is not present, and the real robber was a tall white male. If they have a lineup of 10 people, only 1 of which is a tall white male, witnesses might falsely identify that person as the robber.

    • @DisgruntledPeasant

      ^ unfortunately systemic problems like this are made even more powerful by people finding false solutions (or in this case, seeing a solution for a similar but diferent problem) and believing the problem is no longer there.
      This kind of problem is in every part of our lives from the most trivial to the most important matters and fallacies are everywhere...

    • @ShreyRupani
      @ShreyRupani 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Fancy Bird Exactly! Wouldn't the witnesses' choice be independent of each other? Witnesses don't discuss and decide beforehand. Nor do they choose in front of each other(no peer pressure).
      The only reason a 100% identification might be incorrect, would be because of bias in the lineup.
      And witnesses can't do much about that. They can't pick a (say)woman when the bank robber was clearly a man, even if not the correct man.
      If there's a bias in the lineup, the police are discreetly at fault and since they're the ones making a final decision, there's nothing a witness can do about it.
      Counter arguments are welcome.

    This is an old video, but as a Detective, understand that we don't allow any witness or victim to see or know who another witness/victim is picking out of a lineup. Lineups are not like on TV where the people stand in a room. They are pictures of six people on sheet of paper that all similar characteristics (skin color, hair color/length/type of style, all have to have glasses or no glasses, jewelry or no jewelry, etc). The Witness/Victim then circles in red ink the person they pick, write their initials beside it and sign and date the bottom with a brief statement of 'this is the apple that stole my banana".

    I think that the problem si more of "actual results" versus "expected results". Usually, (in experiments with more than "yes' or "no" answers), the results follow a so-called "normal distribution" (Gauss bell). If the results are too spread out, something is wrong. But if the results are "too consistent", then something is at least dubious.

    In this case, unanimity is subject to question if the 10 witnesses are interviewed together which would allow social pressures to influence decisions. However, if each of the 10 is interviewed independent of the others (not allowing for social pressure contamination) and we still come to a consensus, then of course 10 is far greater than 6!

  • @mr.tennisballs955
    @mr.tennisballs955 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    One of my favorite movies about unanimity and going against it is 12 Angry Men. (Spoilers if you haven't seen it watch it) The movie starts in a court case and shows the twelve male jury members leaving to discuss the fate of the defendant. At the first the case seems open and shut to them, all the evidence points to him being guilty so eleven of the jury are in agreement that the defendant is guilty, some more confident and some less about the decision. But one man goes against their choice and isn't sure about the decision. And the rest of the movie shows all the evidence of the case and explains logistics of each item and how it all means the man couldn't have committed the crime, and it ends.
    This taught me a valuable lesson about going against the crowd and trusting my own instincts even when it's not convenient, it's just moral.

      +Kyle Amoroso Most police forces have some forms of quality control to ensure that people don't mistakenly pick the wrong suspect in a line-up. Usually, this is things like telling the witness that the actual culprit _may not_ be in the line-up, or by ensuring that the line-up is diverse. Ie, making sure that you don't have one guy with some distinguishing factor as people often pick the odd-one-out as the suspect.
      Generally speaking though, most police line-ups wouldn't have ten witnesses picking a suspect; it'd usually only be one or sometimes two so the uninamity aspect wouldn't really be noticable

    Well I’d say this all depends on the context: Are witnesses called in all at the same time? Are they influenced by past witnesses that way? Is the police pushing a number subconsciously by stating the ones number differently or asking if they’re sure it wasn’t B instead. If we take 10 witnesses and free from all that side manipulation we also swap the sequence in which the suspects are placed in, we can greatly improve the odds of accuracy. We might still tend to remember a person being the big scary guy with the tatoo if we only had a glimpse but by asking preliminary questions before exposure to the suspects, one can again, free from bias that might be a muscular tattooed guy, evaluate what exactly they’ll base their recognition on, like “definitely blonde hair” or “at least 1m90” or “completely shaved”

    I think Unanimity works best when you don't know what the other people/judges are going for. Deliberations are important for a middle ground and a more fine-tuned verdict but I think one of the best raw data is the untainted first judgment of each judge/people without the influence of others. So, 10 people being in separate rooms and picking the same suspect is more reliable than 10 people being in one room and agreeing on who the suspect is!

    why would I agree if the mass agrees on one thing? it might be best for them but not for me, they might like one thing but I would like something else, they would do the same thing but I prefer to do it a diffrent way, they try to choose from left to right but I prefer to go around it. why should I trust the social norm if my gut feeling tells me to do it anyways? why should I please others by pretending something I'm not? how can I learn if I keep following what others think is right? I need to fail for me to learn something I don't need someone telling what's logical and what is not what is right from what is wrong what is best and what is not. I know what I want I know what's best for me, just incase I did something wrong I let it be but atleast i learned something from my own mistakes by my own decisions and in the end if I succeed I take all the glory or if I fail there's nobody I can blame but myself.

    There's also the fact that people tend to follow the group. Sometimes even as far as agreeing to something that is obviously wrong just because everybody else did it.
    Because if everybody else says something different, it makes you doubt your own judgement, and you're more likely to just agree with the group.

    I agree with most of that stuff, but I'm not sold on the criminal lineup part. I mean I guess you could look at if the suspected chosen had the same number each time or not, as well as if the the witnesses had any way of telling each other what number they chose. This could cause that problem. Other than that I don't see how a unanimous choice could be made from errors in memory. Most likely the errors would only affect some witnesses, and those that did make mistakes would choose different people. Is that the point you are trying to make though, that the lineup may not have been conducted properly? If so I agree. I still think a unanimous decision is possible though.

    • @duo1666
      @duo1666 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because personal bias or societal based bias could fill in the gaps. Essentially, someone in the line up who "looks guilty" to you while matching some of the features stored in memory would become who you claim did it.
      Eye witness testimony is notoriously inaccurate and bad, yet is often held as some of the strongest evidence by a jury, so much so that it can often be valued more than physical evidence that proves innocence.

    • @MitchBurns
      @MitchBurns 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      duo1666 I understand all that, but I still don't see that 10/10 witnesses could all pick the not only the wrong guy, but the same wrong guy because of that.

    • @duo1666
      @duo1666 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mitch Burns Because memory is inherently flawed, and biases have sway. If 10/10 pick the same person, then either they all got a really good look and the person is really distinctive (the video explicitly says a glimpse, so likely not the case), or its likely some kind of bias is taking charge.

    • @MitchBurns
      @MitchBurns 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @TheKYLEdavid

      There could still be an inherent flaw that has nothing to do with communication.
      For example, let's assume that they do a police line-up in which the real robber is not present, and the real robber was a tall white male. If they have a lineup of 10 people, only 1 of which is a tall white male, witnesses might falsely identify that person as the robber.
