I can't believe that Comfrey was not included, or was it? I know you mentioned it. I would never be without that one. It's called "Knitbone" as it helps mend broken bones, or "knits them back together." It also makes a great fertilizer for your garden plants. You soak it in a bucket of water to make comfrey tea for your plants. I saw that you may have had a packet of Lamb's Ears. They used those during the Civil War as bandages, to help soak up blood. I always grow that, and it is so soft and beautiful. I've grown and used herbs for over 30 years, and I love teaching people about them. Sweet Basil is one of my very favorite! Thank you for sharing this!!

Comfrey is amazing! She talked about it in a video last season, which led me to trying to find some. We made a poultice out of it for a jaw issue over the summer. Never knew much about lambs ear- great to know!

I don't think comfrey can be grown from seed... I had to buy root cuttings online to grow some. Etsy.

Toothache plant can be used other places than your mouth! I used it as a spit poultice on my hand once after stuffing some canning jars full of jalapeno peppers bare handed (bad idea!) I had to go out in the heat and work in the garden afterwards and my hands were on fire! I had toothache plant in the garden and I chewed some up and spit it on my hands. I left it for a minute or two and the pain was gone! It only lasts about 20-30 minutes though. So keep that in mind.
I have also used it for toothache and it does work wonders! Don't swallow it though! You'll have a very tingly throat. Not a good sensation in my opinion, although I have heard that it is used in asian cooking! Very cool plant!

The toothache plant can also be used to relieve pain from bee stings and bite from ants, horse flies, mosquitos, etc.

You must add comfrey. A broken bone will heal so much faster, but it also acts as an anesthetic. Which, if you have a broken bone, you will definitely appreciate. Boil the root for 10-15 min and apply externally.

One of my favorite remedies that came from my granny is garlic tea. Peel and smash a clove, put it in a cup, pour boiling water over it. Add honey and lemon to taste. PLEASE PLEASE be careful with the St. John's wort! It can have alot of bad side effects! It can increase your heart rate, dizziness, faint, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or make you feel agitated to name a few. I took it years ago for anxiety but it made me sleepy so i quit. Was considering taking it again until i looked it up. Im highly allergic to a lot of meds, and just react differently to over the counter or prescription drugs, so i wont take anything anymore. Trying to use the herbs more instead . Jill you did a great job describing how you use all of these herbs! I agree.. once the smells get you, you're hooked on fresh!

Does echinacea need to be cold stratified before planting? I read that it does so I didn't put my seeds out this spring.
Also, peppers are really easy to over winter! I just dug up my favorite pepper (sweet mini bell) and put it in a big pot (cattle feed tub) and moved it to the garage. I set it out on warm winter days and it's now 3 years old!

Concerning cayenne pepper. If you are going to save the seeds you need to find out how far away from other types of peppers it has to be so that it doesn't get mixed with those other peppers. Otherwise you will have something different next time you plant that seed. This goes for any pepper.

I have a thyme "bush" that is trying to (or was) spill over the pot it's in and take over my yard🤣😂 I've had it for about 3 years. I just harvested a bunch of it and cut it back. So much thyme! 🤤😋
I am having a rough time growing basil this year! 😢 I've already planted a couple varieties twice. I finally got a single Tulsi sprout the other day. Hopefully I don't kill it. I've never tried Tulsi before. Another I'm trying this year is blue spice. I've got about 5 plants that have sprouted on that but they are yellowing. 😢 Well they were worse the other day, I've been hovering over it for the past few days trying to figure out what I've done. I may have over fed it. I'm really not sure. It's looking better today.
I also have Genovese. I sowed heavy and only got 3 sprouts. They yellowed worse then the blue spice and still aren't looking good 😢 kinda sickly.
This year is the 1st year I've planted A LOT! Not just basil. Before this year I've only done potted plants. This year I've built an in ground garden where I planted brussel sprouts, broccoli(2 varieties catskill and long island), cauliflower, garlic, onions. These are also a 1st try. I also have already planted 3 successions of cilantro. Oregano! 😅 These 2 herbs have taken off in my potted plant garden and both are 1sts as well. I'm so excited just for those 2. I harvested from the cilantro for the 1st time the other day and added it to grilled chicken salad. MmMm. Devine. Believe it or not, I've never tasted cilantro fresh from the home garden. Mm
I had rosemary growing a few years ago when I got the thyme plant and ended up killing it some how and don't even know how. It may have become root bound and I didn't realize it. I had planned to plant it in the ground. We had moved into a rented small lot "temporarily" and planned on moving again when we found land. 5 years later and we are still looking. 😢 We haven't found the forever home yet and I didn't want to plant it in the ground and then have to dig it up again. So. Maybe I should have. I didn't expect to be stuck here this long.
I've tried container growing cucumbers and tomatoes as well with not much success. I got them to grow but they didn't produce much. I always blame it on a black thumb instead of green but I know I just have to put more effort into learning how to speak the plant language. I did very little research until the last few years. Honestly, I thought to grow plants...just stick em in dirt and give them water. Not so much. The soil here is crap and for container plants they need food as well. So.....learning soil health and how to build it. So far ..... It's a lot I have to admit. Can be overwhelming.
Now I am in the process of building a raised bed for my next space from pallets. For tomatoes....I have 7 plants, 4 varieties. I tried to start 2 varieties of cucumber and so far only 1 has sprouted. Trying 1 type of zucchini....hasn't sprouted yet. I'm going to give the 2 types that haven't sprouted another week ...I planted them 1 week ago in seed trays.... Then I'll try 1 more time maybe or just go with what I already have sprouted and run with it. Not sure.
    I tried peppermint.... It didn't sprout 😢
I am trying lavender....I think I seen a tiny bit of green the other day. I cold stratified it in my fridge for a monthish. I hope it grows 😢
Anyways! I'm trying. I finally got the courage to try again after months of research. PRAY FOR ME!
THANKS for sharing info with us noobs. 🫂

I think lavender likes to be a little drier, if I remember correctly. Have you tried mulching your lavender and then covering them with a bucket for the Winter?

Sorry to correct you but Cayenne Pepper you can save the plant in winter as I had one for 7 years but I didn't get snow..Can't see if you dig it out and put inside in a warm place it will look like a stick or dead but it is still alive...feed it and put out when warms up put in good soil and ferti and good luck...😂😂😂

Hey Jill, can ya call Jess and remind her about stinging nettles tea (or soup) for her allergies. She's having an awful time with all the pollen in the air and all over the place. Maybe you two should make a video about this together. Might be fun.
Actually, yeah, that would be a great idea. Lotsa people in her comments also suffering allergies and you could discuss many of the available options, herbal and otherwise.
(One example: Someone in her comments mentioned eating local honey.)
(I wonder how one would fit that into eating a keto/carnivore diet???)
(And is it just me? Am I the only one that notices Jess lost some weight? Is she following the same diet now?)
Anywho, I think I've heard of the survival garden seeds packages before. As I recall they have a good amount of seeds for a decent price. Please let us know how well they germinate, etc. I'm considering a purchase.

as someone who did Keto once upon a time, honey is not the best for it. It's pretty much pure carbs, so definitely eat in moderation! As for stinging nettle for allergies.. now you have my attention! Looking this up ASAP. thank you!
