I've only done 6 months and I'm not so good so usually say I havent trained before when I go to a different BJJ gym. I only train 4 times per week and 2 times judo. Maybe after a year or 2 I might say I've done a little
@@para_theus I was just self conscious that I've been training regularly and I'm still so bad at BJJ. I enjoy it and just want to have fun without pressure
Long story short, I did white belt twice. Where I train now I walked in with a fairly new white belt, no stripes, and whatever. No one asked so I didn't tell. Drilling single leg x, partner tells me to just try to get my hips off the ground so I do, no issue. He's goes "man that was really good" hey thanks man! The day goes on and it's time to roll. Professor knew I came from another gym so he's cool with me rolling. I go with my drilling partner (newish blue belt) and after a minute or two I locked up a kimura and got a tap. He's like wow dude nice. So I said thanks! Finished the roll and now professor comes by and he's all, I thought you were a white belt? I said I was. He goes no you aren't. Yes I am, the gym I came from said he doesn't "honor stripes" so he gave me this white belt and that's what I have. Professor laughs and asks how long I've been training I said almost everyday for the last 2 and a half years. My rolling partner was like dude wtf! Anyways I'm sure if you were actually there in the moment it was funnier but I was definitely the first guy in the video. And in case you want to know, my professor made me go through the whole white belt again. He was nice enough to give me two stripes after like 2 or 3 months, I don't remember, and then towards the end of a year with him he gave me a blue belt and on from there.
I was sort of the "never trained before" guy and I hated it lol I had done some "crappling" through the Army and also my karate system hit some basic grappling here and there, plus goofing around with my buddies. End result was that I broke the hearts of a couple white belts who were excited about beating up the new guy then got a nice visit from the mat enforcer plus a solid ego crushing from the blue belts and up! I was up front about having some experience so they weren't too bad about it but still was an interesting experience

The idea is that if someone in the gym needs to have their ego checked -- maybe they're some shit-hot White Belt who came in and they're tapping the other WBs left and right and getting a bit "big for their britches" in doing so. Or maybe it's just someone who's being a really rough rolling partner and smashing whoever they're going with rather than flowing. The mat enforcer steps in and gives them a taste of the food chain by reminding them that there's always a bigger fish. Typically that means toying them in a rolling session before going hard and chaining submissions together, having them at their mercy and showing them a taste of what their previous victims felt -- possibly leaving the lesson implicit or including a few helpful words about gym etiquette to follow in the future.
Had a guy tell me he’d never done grappling catch me in a knee bar a week after my blue belt promotion. Turns out he’d done some wrestling and BJJ in the past.
I transitioned from wrestling to BJJ and The only thing I have to say is that I Still ask if we can start standing. I hate guard pulling, it feels cheap and easy. Whereas while on my feet I feel like I earned the takedown. Its more satisfying
I never wrestled but I guess it’s my natural style. I get so sad when guys wanna start from sitting. Normally after one standup takedown guys don’t wanna reset in the feet with me lol. I started training in September, never did a formal grappling sport or contact sport before but of course messed around as a boy and had a few fights. I think the wrestling is my favorite part of jiu jitsu 😂
Keep in mind that sometimes people like to start sitting because the mats are full and wrestling requires space. Not everyone wants to injure, hurt and step on others around them so that they can enjoy themselves.
@@islamal-basha2138 I've always found space and time to practice from standing, may not be the case in other places, but I think most of the time that isn't an issue.
@charrleschervanik3632 I feel the same way, but I’m a judo black belt. Our mat space for jiu jitsu isn’t too big, so when there’s a lot of people in the class I end up getting disappointed that we can’t start from standing. Half the class either gets scared or accepts their fate with me when I want to stand up with them 😂

I guess I'm the ''never trained before''. It's true, I'm new to jiujitsu, and grappling in general! But the fact that I'm a strong and fit personal trainer who's practiced and competed in many (very different) sports kinda makes me different than what you'd expect from an off-the-street white belt.
