Some of the best writing and voice acting I've ever had the pleasure of enjoying came from this series. I'm yet to find a fantasy franchise as shakesperean as this one. Just a little warning. The story gets a bit convoluted as you progress through the series, as you are required to remember some specific moments from previous games, especially from this one. But if you are going to play them back to back, that may not be a problem. EDIT: You're taking notes, nevermind lol
Absolutely! I hope he'll do the whole series. I got into gaming just because I wanted to experience the story back as a teen, and I haven't seen anything better written in gaming since. It also got me into writing.
Probably the only franchise in which I actually find the *spoiler*.................,....................................,.......................................................................................................................*spoiler*... time travel angle enjoyable.
Oh my god..... You're giving me major nostalgia.... This game and Legend of Dragoons were the first games I got for my playstation 1.... I STILL HAVE THESE GAMES.... Haven't touched it in years... Thankyou.
Someone shared your series on the LoK fan Discord, and now I'm binge watching your entire series. I just bought a bunch of popcorn, I have something to do on my next few days off. Let's have a Legacy of Kain party, woo hoo!
Thank you for doing a playthrough of this! I can't find anyone else who has, and that surprises me because this is a hands down favorite of mine. Very underrated title!
Phenomenal franchise and perfect timing to be starting it. Much like many games of the era, as long as the player (/viewer) accepts the artistic license, the story unfolds with the fantastic voice acting. Wanted Mapo to play this for ages, and know he'll enjoy! Good choice, and look forward to the sequels... 😉
Did you recognize Loghain's voice? 😃I'd listen to Simon Templeman read the phonebook, but the spectacular writing in this series really allows him to show his talent. As for bat form, the game often gives you the opportunity to fly to the next main story location, but it's always better to walk. Otherwise you can miss out on the smaller dungeons that give you vital spells and gear, and Kain's commentary.
Am one of longtime fans, happy to be here I love this game :) Vae Victus! P.S. The Heart of Darkness 😂 P.P.S. Kain’s VA is Simon Templeman, Loghain’s VA, although more than a decade younger 😅
When enemies are dazed, when they're standing still swaying in circles and have one hit left, you can drink their blood. You also don't have to be next to targets to drink their blood and you can drink multiple targets blood at the same time. The Heart of Darkness is also used automatically when you die. So you can think of them as lives. But they do heal more if you use them manually.
One of my favourite game series! Remember I had this one on my birthday many years ago lol. These games have some of the most impressive dialogue I've seen in a video game
Jesus now that's what I call a classic, Such a nostalgic event we can witness here with mapo. And since this channel is always going for the full series I'm already looking forward to soul reaper! Kain was one of my favorite video game character when I was little
1:11:16 Yes, Before you finish your enemies, You can drain their blood when they are in a dying state. When you drain their blood, You don't need to get close to them, If I remember correctly. But draining blood can surprise you in some areas in the future.
You can tell by my name that i love this series lol This is such an underappreciated game and series. These were my favorite games as a kid and still is my favorite series after Souls games. I really hope you stick to the series and play all of the games! Glad to see it getting some love. Great video, I'm excited for this series!
Cant watch right now but I have a tip, you can interact with thing in the world and talk to NPC with some button game did not tell you that. You can also use thia button to examine items in inventory and get more lore
Nice. I haven't played this whole series, but I did play Blood Omen 2, Soul Reaver 2, and Defiance, all of which I enjoyed. I never owned a PS1 (I had an N64 during that era) so I never really got the opportunity to play the original Blood Omen or Soul Reaver. Soul Reaver 2 was hands down my favorite of the three I played.
Im so happy u are playing Legacy of Kain the fact u can experience this hidden game of a game its one of the best games i experienced the voice acting and the whole writing of the story is just one of a kind i really hope u will play the whole series its definently worth it
MAN OH MANNNNNNNN!!! This is so hype! Cannot wait for you to finish this and play soul reaver eventually 👀 That and legacy of kain defiance are FANTASTIC
I’m really interested in this playthrough. I never played any of the series, I had Soul Reaver on Dreamcast as a kid but never played more then an hour. Years later I learned that game was a sequel, so I’m looking forward to seeing the original game and what it’s like
This will be pretty interesting - it's a game that's been recommended to me multiple times in the past as well, but since I need to emulate it I just never got around to it. Too many other games on my list that are easier to play lol
So excited to see this game come up! I never expected to enjoy a pixely clicky-action game based around Vampires, but this series took me through so many things that I ended up loving despite my own tendencies and preferences. Hahaha Voice Acting, Mood, World Lore and Design are all stellar in this series (especially in the next two games chronologically, to me!), and I think you're gonna have a good time! Hopefully the views can catch up and more people can second-hand enjoy something awesome and unique too! It seems like you've been having fun though, and you've made really good progress all along the way, so woo!
The vampire in the opening cinematic siphoning blood. 😂 I had a blast watching the episode - Nice story, music and voice acting complemented with your humorous commentary. Vae Victis!
Given how much you nerded out at the opening monologue from the Elden Ring intro, I think you're gonna adore some of the beautiful dialogue in this series. Soul Reaver 2 has some just phenomenal speaking. Great voices delivering quite rich and flowery writing. Definitely try to really listen to and understand what everyone is saying though, it's not just pretentious thesaurus writing, there's substance there too.
1:33:45 The doors/caves with this symbol only open during a full moon, which is why there is a lunar cycle as well as a day/night cycle. Also your wolf form is much more powerful during a full moon. You could call this a tip spoiler but the game will never actually inform you of this. A much more broken tip would be that you can donate blood twice per trip in a spirit forge before running out, it will leave you extremely low however but you can then use the sanctuary spell to return to Kain's crypt, use wolf form to hop the fences outside then fully refill your health by fighting and feeding on the assassins again, then use bat form to get back to where you were. In the case of the flay spirit-forge there is a bat icon right outside so you can easily cycle through donating blood for 20 flays, re-killing your assassins and going back for 20 more flays, utterly broken. Not so simple for other spirit forges not right next to bat icons of course and the Heart of Darkness forge only grants you two at a time, though there is a super-secret way to get the full 99 in one go (and only once).
This game would be fantastic Souls Like game. Imagine hunting all pillar protectors like you did with great souls in DS2 or with cinders in DS3. Damn, i wish from soft would remaster this game. Never gonna happen, but still I can dream.
I wish! It would make a perfect open world RPG. Despite the limitations of the time, you can't beat the atmosphere and care they put into building Nosgoth, and even the game play as far as gear and spells are concerned.
Oh hell yeah, I remember very little of this except that it was excellent. 😄 Now that Squeenix sold off Crystal Dynamics/Eidos I hope we'll see more Legacy of Kain, it's a great series with a deep universe
Nice! Really excited for your thoughts on the LoK games! I've played Soul Reaver 1, Blood Omen 2 and Defiance myself, never touched Blood Omen 1, so it's gonna be interesting to see the entire story. These games have a great atmosphere. Looks like the first one is more fun to play than I imagined. Good stuff. Also it looks like in terms of names for the villages they got inspired by german small town names. The "Steinchen" in Steinchencröe is a german word for small rock or pebble.
I am a huge soul reaver fan and never played blood omen. I must say i missed a extremly good game. What a shame. Remeber this game came out before diablo and the other games.
I had thought I played this long ago, but after watching you for a bit I realized I started with Soul Reaver, the second game in the Legacy of Kain series.
Tbh I’ve never considered playing this series before, but I always watch at least the first episode of your playthroughs to see if the game interests me. Very glad for that because this one really interests me, and I honestly never would have given it a second glance otherwise, even as someone who plays a fair amount of older games. Can’t wait to see the rest of this one and then maybe play it myself!
Necromancer Mortanious who condemn the failed Malek to indefinite servitude by extracting his soul and sealing it into an armor is voice acted by the amazing TONY JAY. TONY JAY also gave voice to elder god in the Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver series with an apex performance. RIP TONY JAY
This is going to be a great series. Hopefully enough to continue later down the road with the sequels. Do enjoy yourself in the world of Nosgoth, Mapo.
Glad to see you started these, and disappointed that the algorithm neglected to let me know you were playing them. Time to binge watch them I guess! 😂 And I was the one who requested this in the first place (Richard Wild). The algorithm only decided to show me your part 2 of Soul Reaver, and from there I've gone to your playlists and found this 😂.
Vae Victis is Latin for "woe to the vanquished" OR "woe to the conquered". It means that those defeated in battle are entirely at the mercy of their conquerors and should Not Expect or Request Leniency.
In an era of gaming when voice acting was still scarce and good voice acting was almost non existent this series showed up. Its probably my favorite storyline in a series I've ever played with some the best voice acting of its era. Thankfully the gaming industry did seem to take note and many games have since come that also take care to provide a great story experience but LoK series was one of the first to take this medium seriously for storytelling. I have two tattoos and one of them is from this series. I know you've completed the series but this version of you has no idea the awesome mind fu** of a storyline you just stepped into. Thank you for reacting to this series. Time to watch your journey!
Keep in mind, that a lot of areas that you'll find, need specific items, weapons, spells or abilitties in order to progress, don't worry if you get stuck in some areas :)
I figured the game that scroll by in the intro were games Mapo has played already lol Great to see ya playing this, as it is the best vampire game ever made, hope you enjoy the kick ass story, voice acting and lore, as its all top notch :)
38:25 I think when the skulls start glowing after you hit enemies a couple times, if you interact with them, then you can drain them. I think thats what it is implying at least
I played this game like a year ago and it was the only game of LOK I hadn’t played. It’s actually super weird to see in chronological order. The first game I played in its entirety was Soul Reaver 2.
I can't imagine Mapocolops will react to it, but if anyone else hasn't seen it, the comedic 'cut-scene rewrites' by DawnSomewhere are iconic, while somehow being very true to the spirit of the characters. Map, you're going to get a lot coin flip, squid and 'History ...' memes, but hopefully no spoilers :) .
Hell yeah! Legacy of Kain has been one of my favorite game series of all time since I was a child! Oh my god I LOVE these games! I was always sad that nothing new ever came along, excited and then disappointed in any announcements and their cancellation, hated Nosgoth and was super excited with that LoK questionaire that went around months ago. All the games are fairly different with their own unique strengths and weaknesses. The first one is generally the weakest gameplay wise but there was a lot of stuff going for it. A lot of powers and equipment. But I always loved the aesthetics, the atmosphere and the feel of the world. Good on you for going for the GOG version. The load times on the playstation, at least when I played it, were completely atrocious. Tens of seconds when you pause and between each screen change, not to mention the actual in-game loading times. Though that might just be the disk I had. The narration is a constant in these games and one of my favorite parts. The fancy, florid language and descriptions was instantly interesting and hooked me. These games taught me more vocabulary words than grade school! Yeah, Blood Omen does just dump you right into the thick of it, slamming you with story build up without any chance to catch your breath. Don't worry, you're not supposed to survive the assassins. They just keep spawning till you die. Oh, trust me, Kain is absolutely NOT a hero! Agreed, the music in these games has always been phenomenal. I've had LoK soundtracks on my MP3 player for 15 years now! Nupraptor isn't REALLY a villain, honestly. He's just a man who's been driven to bitter madness from the death of his lover and is lashing out in rage at the rest of the Circle. But in doing so he's slowly killing the world, for the death of the Pillars means the death of Nosgoth! To be fair though, making his retreat a giant skull probably didn't do him any favors. Yeah, you have a LOT of different abilities. Vampires are rather OP in these games. That's kind of the POINT. The lure of such ultimate power at the cost of mere humanity. That's a theme, right there.
Only ever played Soul Reaver (never beat it though), but I have to say this game looks bloody gorgeous. PS1 era, you say? The environments, the artstyle, the music, the gameplay, the voice acting, it's all just wonderful. I really regret missing out on this gem. Have to give all them ladies props, not many would walk up to a vampire wielding a sword and try to slap them :)
The Legacy Of Kain series is predominantly great, especially the early titles up to Soul Reaver 2. Albeit, I haven't touched them since they released. 😅
Thanks for this. I've an interesting history with the franchise, but the one thing I will always say is, the cinematic ambition of these games is stagger, they literally had to make 4 games to realise half of what the originally tried to cram into the 1st SR game. I only know this title as backstory, so this could be novel. So sad we never got Dark Messiah.
Vae Victus! 😱 I can't believe you're playing LoK! It's what got me into gaming back in 2003, and this is arguably my favoruite game in the series. The story is definitively worth playing for, but the gameplay can be a bit hit and miss across the different installments. It's very good in this one IMO, just requires a lot of resource fiddling and positioning. Fingers crossed that the game runs well. Before it was released on GOG I used to keep my mom's old '98 laptop just to play it 😂
I feel like you must be from an alternate universe or something cause there’s so many iconic games you’ve never played before the channel yet you’re such a skilled gamer. Wtf did you grow up playing?
Final Fantasy mostly, and Kingdom Hearts Star Wars games, Pokemon, Fable, Halo, Gears of War...lots of other iconic franchises but didn't grow up with the right systems or a lot of money
If you find yourself in a room with multiple victims, try spamming the feed button. You'll drain blood from multiple victims at once. Works on stunned enemies, too. Also, blue blood (from ghosts and the like) refills magic, and green blood poisons you.
Dang man, you're finally playing this after having it on your intro screen for ages. The start of a great series, though each entry changes in form and function somewhat but has a continuos narrative. This first game really shows its age, but to be fair they all do by now, however the narrative and voice-acting is always amazing across the series. A notable weak point in this first game is the complete lack of tutorialising. As with many games of this era it assumes you have the paper manual to be able to learn the basic functions, and like _every_ digital version of such early games no one bothers to include a digital version of said manual. I'm a half hour into this video and you've not figured out that you should be feeding on your enemies as well as the sacrifices on the walls, I'm wondering how long it will take you to pick up on it... I have to say though that this version is a clear winner over the PS1 version. On the PS1 the loading times are dismally long just to open up a basic menu or pretty much to load any changes. It was so bad that the sequel eliminated load times altogether (or rather to cleverly hide them. One thing Blood Omen really deserves credit for is the depth, as well as the quality, of the voice acting - Every line in the game is voice acted and several years ahead of MGS pulling off the same thing.
Beautiful game. I have entertained a nine episode animated series ala Castlevania based on this first game. Pretty close to the original with a few liberties taken out of necessity. Admittedly pretty difficult task considering at least three of the voice actors from this series are now deceased. Hell, Michael Bell has now outlived Tony Jay by over twelve(?) years.
Someone make sure to direct him to the modern soul reaver 1 fixes for the pc version. Proper hd and controller support is now a thing on that messy port.
Never played this, going to enjoy watching some Old School mechanics. That said....PARASITE EVE! Please! Between the storyline and the sci-fi that brings up some fascinating biology; easily one of the deepest games I've played. Along side parasite eve... It has a book; if you havent read Metro yet, do! I didn't know metro had a book, letting you know Parasite Eve does is my way to repay that! Metro runs along side the games; but parasite eve the game is very much a sequel/s to the book. You don't need to read it to play the game. The game references the events of the book enough not to miss anything important.
Don't let all of the secrets he found here distract you from the fact he still hasn't fully explored the Forest of Fallen Giants.
This is my favourite channel meme lmao
crying
The heart of darkness, the heart of darkness the heart of darkness the heart of darkness
Mortanius The Necromancer is voiced by the late Tony Jay😢. He also has voiced Judge Claude Frollo and Megabyte.
Frollo was and is the legit best Disney villan. Such a shame the hunchback doesn't see more play cause of its dark themes.
The background dialogue has my wife constantly asking “what are you watching?” Thank you kind sir.

I like how we got almost 20 minutes in and killed a couple of captive virgins for Mapo to go "Ohh, yeah, I think we're not such a good fellow"
nice profile pic
**laughs in Kain's laugh**
Oh my god..... You're giving me major nostalgia.... This game and Legend of Dragoons were the first games I got for my playstation 1.... I STILL HAVE THESE GAMES.... Haven't touched it in years... Thankyou.

HOLY SHIT MAPO. I just noticed this playthrough! Super dope! So nostalgic.

YES!! Seeing this in my feed put a huge smile on my face! Hopefully you'll have a good time with my all-time favourite game series.
blood omen is one of my favorite games. glad people still discover it

Looking forward to this series! Legacy of kain is one of my most favourite game series ever
Absolute classic 👌👌
A nice thing about games from the 90s: Everything is explained in the manual and all important keys are displayed on the reference card. :)
I had thought I played this long ago, but after watching you for a bit I realized I started with Soul Reaver, the second game in the Legacy of Kain series.
Excellent choice
Also I love the pen and paper thats such a cool playthrough gimmick.
This really vaes my victis

THE HEART OF DARKNESS THE HEART OF DARKNESS THE HEART -
This is going to be a great series. Hopefully enough to continue later down the road with the sequels. Do enjoy yourself in the world of Nosgoth, Mapo.
Voice acting is so good! I didn't quite understand why a vampire is turning into a werewolf, though.
Over an hour in and you FINALLY figured out you can drain stunned enemies 😂
Glad you're enjoying the game. On the the best series out there.
@ 1:11:56 Yeah, I was like "FINALLY!!!" :-) I love watching Mapo's blind playthroughs!
Glad to see you started these, and disappointed that the algorithm neglected to let me know you were playing them.

Does this put Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver on your radar?
"My mind was empty save for one thought"
I thought this game had something to do with a ninja-cat but I think I confused the title with Legend of Kay
A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.
I played this game like a year ago and it was the only game of LOK I hadn’t played. It’s actually super weird to see in chronological order. The first game I played in its entirety was Soul Reaver 2.
Woooooh blood omen 1, one of my favorite games played by my favorite let's player, let's gooooooooooooooooo !!! :O
Imagine having Kain to narrate the item descriptions in Dark Souls, that's what it would feel like 24:56
Blimey Mapo you are going back to one of my favourites Let's do this Enjoy 🙂
statue looks like a demon goblin crouching :D
I really hope you play the whole series🎉🎉🎉
Thanks for this.
I've an interesting history with the franchise, but the one thing I will always say is, the cinematic ambition of these games is stagger, they literally had to make 4 games to realise half of what the originally tried to cram into the 1st SR game.
I only know this title as backstory, so this could be novel. So sad we never got Dark Messiah.
So exciting, love these games
Final Fantasy mostly, and Kingdom Hearts
Star Wars games, Pokemon, Fable, Halo, Gears of War...lots of other iconic franchises but didn't grow up with the right systems or a lot of money
Very excited to watch this! Hope to see Parasite Eve soon also.
I’m so glad you’re starting the series, can’t wait for you to get to my personal favourite: Blood Omen 2
Wow, he literally ignores every cutscene, just turns away to not see it. What great curiosity he has !
"Night dawns"... 🤔
Just realised the elder god & mortanius have the same VA
Beautiful game. I have entertained a nine episode animated series ala Castlevania based on this first game. Pretty close to the original with a few liberties taken out of necessity.
Admittedly pretty difficult task considering at least three of the voice actors from this series are now deceased. Hell, Michael Bell has now outlived Tony Jay by over twelve(?) years.
The twitch time streamer moebius is my new favorite!
Someone make sure to direct him to the modern soul reaver 1 fixes for the pc version. Proper hd and controller support is now a thing on that messy port.
"tHe HeArT oF dArKnEsS"
"Shhhhhhh!"
I’m not the only one who kept saying feeding while they’re staggered lol
Yeah, he figured it out @ 1:11:56 :-)
Flaaayyyyyyy.
Nice playthrough!
This was a very formulative game for me. A lot of things stem from this game.
