The scene at The Pillars is probably my favorite cutscene in all of gaming, the dialog is expertly written. It cements Kain, and to an extent, Raziel as some of my favorite characters.
Indeed. Excellent dialogue from 2 very intelligent characters, and one of the strongest confirmations that Kain's motivations are deeper than just petty jealousy.
"- How do you equip this..." **the heart of darkness** "- Im pressing all the buttons but..." **The Heart of Darkness** "- Maybe if i- **THE HEART OF DARKNESS** **THE HEART OF DARKNESS** **THE HEART OF DARKNESS**
I haven't played the games in a while, but even I can't avoid the inevitable "*THE HEART OF DARKNESS THE HEART OF DARKNESS THE HEART OF DARKNESS*" playing in my head.
1:25:08 The Sanctuary of the Clans in the first Soul Reaver is above ground, it's at the very same place where Kain's speech about the coin took place. It was built during the empire and Kain made the Pillar of Balance as his throne. The room you just entered? Completly new for you. This room is under the Pillars. Hell, these ARE the Pillars. Just as they go high in the sky, nobody knows how deep they go in the ground x)
You know the story is great if an 11 yr old Polish girl with not so great comprehension of English language fell in love with it some 15 years ago. Funny thing, thanks to some developemental stages in my life I kind of got the privilege of experiencing the series twice anew.
Regarding how the Reaver works now; remember that the entity that was trapped in the Reaver (now fixed to Raziel's arm) was a soul-devouring entity. Now it's awake, it will consume the souls of any enemy you kill with it, rousing it further (the circle around your health bar). Three kills in quick succession will be enough to fill the circle, at which point it'll start draining Raziel's health. The payoff is that the Reaver gets stronger as it's fed, a more than half-filled circle means it's strong enough to kill even endgame enemies in one or two blows (which is often worth the health cost, particularly later in the game).
So glad to see that you've started this one so soon after completing 'Soul Reaver.' This is arguably the best in the entire series. I've no doubt you'll absolutely love it... By the way, the very first room in which you find yourself with Moebius is the room in which Vorador slaughtered Circle members in the original Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain. You'll see many more locations that were either seen or mentioned in previous titles... ;) Edit: If you kill an enemy using the Soul Reaver, the blade itself devours the souls without giving you a chance to consume them yourself. It was alluded to earlier during Raziel's meeting with Moebius at the tomb of William the Just, but after having met its former self and restoring the physical blade, it has become 'ravenous'. Bear in mind that the mechanics of the blade have changed since the original 'Soul Reaver' game. Also, the storytelling is absolutely superb which is made even more impressive by the fact that the story, from the moment that you begin this game, has no resemblance to the original, cut second half of the original 'Soul Reaver' game. ;) Edit #2: Keep an eye on that second gauge that circles your health bar. It grows when you use the Soul Reaver or when it consumes souls. There's a reason for that, and it's to stop you from over-relying on the blade, becoming overpowered... ;) Edit #3: The final room in which you find yourself, the Subterranean Ruins, is not the same place in which Kain builds his throne. This room lies beneath, underground. The clearest indicator of this is the fact that the platform upon which the Pillars stand is different, along with their inscribed runes. This room has not been seen before this point throughout the series...
Okay, this play through is earning the full trio of like, comment, and subscribe. I cannot emphasise enough just how gloriously happy I’ve been watching someone experience it the way I did - with an emphasis on analysis over “perfect” playing, just getting wholly immersed in the story and loving every second of the glorious script and incredible voice acting. I blasted through this game in about eight hours when it first came out and then rambled with enthusiasm at my Mum and a visiting aunt about the ending for a good twenty minutes after I finished! It’s still my favourite video game story of all time, and watching you laugh and gasp and grab your head or chin in thought/astonishment/etc has filled me with a joy I haven’t known in years. Thank you, sincerely, for this. I’m autistic and haven’t hand-flapped with happiness in a good while; this video changed that and I can’t wait to watch the rest. (Also, I can’t believe I never picked up on the idea that of COURSE a guardian of balance would be able to balance a coin on its edge!!!)
It's my definitive showdown I think, I am a complete Soul Reaver simp xD The fight between Palps and Windu is still pretty high up the of course. This interesting happened first if you think about it!
106:10 What's amazing here is this is when Nuprapter finds Ariel's dead body and sends out his psychic shockwave that effects all those bound to the pillars and you see Kain holding his head as if he too was just effected by Nuprapters mental attack. The more I watch, the more I see how much I missed the first and second times I played these games.
This is so good! I might have voted for another game back when Blood Omen won the poll, but I'm damn glad it did! The growth of the games, this incredible story, now the level of animation in this game - how have these games not all been re-made?
I will never understand why this franchise hasn’t been revisited…they are so damn good love the writing and voice work so much better than a lot of modern games…
Well, you know how it is, as soon as a game sells a thousand bellow what they expected, or its genre isn't the hot stuff anymore, they let the sands of time bury it and forget it. Its only hope is the frandom convincing them and having a couple executives willing to give it a try, and the inevitable adaptation for modern audiences. I think a mix of witcher styled open world and lite souls-like combat would give it what it needs to catch new people.
Hey, i saw this comment and would like to let you know that there was an official survey a while ago (maybe a year ago) from the developers asking fans how they would want the series to continue, and asking for gameplay suggestions. So it is very possible that they plan to bring the series back. But when and how, we have to see. From what i remember, most people said that they want either a Soul Reaver remake (all 3 games into 1 game) or a Sequel that combines everything into a new game (Blood Omen + Soul Reaver). I'm guessing that they would do one of these two options.
By all means, I'm not opposed to down-to-earth characters and personal drama, but we need to bring back those larger than life Heroes/anti-heroes giving their grand speaches with flowery language back into our fictional worlds.
Aye as much as we are left starving at the end of SR1, 90 minutes into SR2 we are so full we can't possibly eat another bite... And yet we crave more, for we are cursed with an insatiable hunger.
Ah, you've arrived at my favourite in the series, which puts it pretty damn high on my list of favourite games of all time. I'm so glad you're playing these. It's so great to get to relive them. And you're in for a real treat with this one. The story is so good! This game is going to repeatedly blow your mind.
Malek and Mortanius are the other two survivors of Vorador's attack. Until Soul Reaver two we didn't know who was the third survivor of Vorador's attack on the circle. In the first Blood Omen Mortanius is seen punishing Malek for failing the other six members of the circle by binding Malek's soul to his armour.
What a stellar beginning to the second act of this narrative. The moment with Kain and Raziel at the Pillars is my favorite. Scene. In. The. Series. And in case anyone was wondering why my username is what it is (thirdcoinedge)....
Reacting as I watch: I love your total "mind blown" reaction to Mobius's exposition of history, when you have actually "lived" through it :D But SR2 is where this series hits! From here on... Gotta live in silence!
At least SR1 cliffhanger made you play the sequel right away, so there's that! 😊 Seriously, it's wonderful watching you react to the lore and story, it's indeed like playing it again for the 1st time. Thank you! Can't wait to see the rest of the game and the franchise. Just keep in mind that Blood Omen 2 is by far the weakest in the franchise in terms of story (it's not catastrophic by any mean though), plus BO2 is not really mandatory to understand the whole story before Defiance, but I'm sure you're gonna play it anyway. In the meantime, enjoy SR2 lore fest!
I can't tell you how profoundly satisfying it is to watch someone relish not only the story, but the superb narration and dialogue too! Truly, the writing for this entire series is a sumptuous "feast", as you said. I once had an opportunity to gush to Amy Hennig about this, and she seemed most gratified to have the writers' magniloquence aptly appreciated :)
Once you understand the meaning of the distortion / displacement phenomenon, you finally understand why Mobius was so scared during his meeting with Raziel in William's chapel.
I just want to give it up for Michael Bell and Simon Templeton. Their voicing of Raziel and Kain were masterful. Really brought these cutscenes alive. Along with Tony Jay as the Elder.
Lemme just crack my back here, Ahhhh! Your expression throughout this first part brought back so much to me when I first jumped into the game over 20 years ago. I am really looking forward for you to continue the journey you have embarked upon.
1:25:08. As you know Kain's throne room is above ground in the first game. When you meet him again in this game, where he explains Ariel's death, the coin flips etc, is the same location as in the first game. But i do understand why you were wondering. Because Kain did have symbols in his chamber. Surrounding the pillars. Also the location of the Elder god might be the same in the first game as well. Because why would it move to a different location when it can just grow in size the longer the pillars are deteriorating? It also seems to ensnare the structure and made itself home for whatever reason, as mentioned by Raziel. On a level design side of things in both games, the locations might be similar and could be a coincidence, but thinking the first game takes place so long after we see the creature for the first time in the second game, it might as well have grown so large, it just consumed a large portion of the lower depths of Nosgoth. Hope you still have loads of fun in this game. Can't wait for the next one 😁
The little headshake and smirk at "My little blue assassin" almost had me rolling xD Yes some of the dialogue is actually a bit corny and over the top, but it works so well in those moments. Even Soul Reaver isn't above winking to the audience going "Eh, eh!?"
Watching this for the second time today, 'cuz ever since I started watching Mapo's videos with DSR, I've had the ever increasing hope that he'd some day play the LoK series and now we're finally here at the heart of the series!! Marvel fans had Endgame, I have this, and it didn't disappoint!
The thing i like about Raziel in the legacy of kain series is that his wings and cowl add a lot to his character where every other character has a bunch of clothes and other stuff!
Oh yeah! My favorite game of all time! This is the combination of all that is great in the entire series and I'm glad that you're liking it! Festen your seatbelt as this game is gonna be a great journey into what art can be in the gaming world! Cheers!
Welcome to the Legacy of Kain hype train Mapo, we will probably never get off the ride but that's not bad at all Come wait with us for a modern remaster, because classic games deserve all the love in the world
It's crazy how much of a step up this game is to the first one. Enjoying every second of the playthrough so far. Love how the story starts to make more and more sense. And I'm excited for more.
31:30 moebius is right to be terrified here atthis very point his omniscience means nothing and the fact he knows when he is supposed to die is no longer an assured event. If Raziel were to kill him here, he would NOT Return and history would be force to reshuffle itself to adapt.
I know you are ahead with your gameplay, but watching this I just cannot wait. This is definately my favorite game story ever. You have no idea … what you are about to discover…
i forgot how awesome SR2 was. Its so fun to see someone genuine reacting to the wall of lore thrown at him :) - i cant wait to see your face at the end of Defiance. I quite a way till there, but im here to walk it with you. Its such an amazing story, and the ending has one of the biggest twists ever. Dont worry, im not going to ruin it by spoiling it, but i will answer one of your questions: Turel, one of Raziels Brothers, was indeed missing in SR1. He was cut during development due to time issues afaik, and is the only of the brothers who managed to escape Raziels killing spree. But you will find out in Defiance what happend to him. Also, a gameplay hint: Stop going back to the spectral realm once you take a few hits. In SR1, the spectral realm enemys where pretty pathetic, easy mobs to be grinded, and this little lifehack may have worked there, but in SR2 things are going to be different. The humans are easy enemies, and they cant follow you to the spectral realm. But later, there will be other enemies. Ones that can be really hard. And these fuckers are not bound to the physical realm, they will come for you, no matter where you try to hide. And as you allready learned, your are MUCH weaker in the spectral realm, because your health noodle is much shorter. Stay in the physical realm, learn to dodge and evade attacks now, as long as easy enemies are around. Or you will be like me, and you have to learn it later with much harder enemies. For me, it was really frustrating, to the point where i was about to stop playing the game at all. But i wanted to know how it ends, so i went on. It took me a while, but... guess i made it somehow. Anyway, you have been warned.
just realised, Raziel unlocked the tomb to free the Elder God as he says at 1:17:01 that it had been sealed for soo long. As we later heard, the soul reaver is the key and the pillars are the lock (holding the elder god down) But through Mobius manipulating the player (and Kain in the final game) we unlock all the doors for The Elder God to crawl free.
In the original PS2 version of this game, there is a weird bug involving those vanishing birds. If you trigger them all up to a certain point in the game, a locked door never unlocks and you get permanently softlocked in the game. It's such a weird oddly specific bug that I've fallen prey to so I always make sure I never touch the ravens.
The Necromancer Mortanius was controled by the Hylden to destroy the pilars of Nosgoth to enter on Nosgoth world on Blood Omen 1 but the problem it didn't went well because Kain destroyed the plans.
Something regarding the license for the franchise is apparently in the works - a remake/reimagining could supposedly be on the cards in the (near?) future.... Fingers crossed eh, but it has a lofty target to achieve.
@@Mapocolops You're right actually. It works perfectly as a simple continuity. I guess i used the term retcon (maybe incorrectly) to mean the development team hadn't planned out Soul Reaver 2 at the time of Blood Omen.
That's not a retcon, that's a canonical event. Without spoiling too much, Moebius MADE it so that both William and Kain both were holding the reaver, as such is the ONLY way that history can be altered. Saying much more would be spoiling, but lets just say its a deliberate plot point, and it WILL come back, at other pivotal points.
Actually, shifting into the spectral realm did cost health in the first game. But there were seemingly random times when it didn't, especially in the latter third of the game.
Man, if you like the story telling in these this much then you've got to try the Marathon series by Bungie at some point. It's a completely different genre and delivery method, but the writing is one of the few series I'd put on par with Soul Reaver. One of Durandal's lines has stuck in my mind alongside "Suppose you throw a coin enough times. Suppose one day, it lands on its edge..." since I was a child. Anyway, this specific game was what I've been waiting for since I saw you start the series. I'm looking forward to the rest.
I really hope that I. The new entry to the series being worked on, they take the advice of all who answered the questionnaire to keep the writing and style of this one and defiance. Michael Bell and Simon Templeman are still alive and willing to do another, though Bell must be in his 80s.
7:40 The switch between Richard Doyle's "Old Sage" and "Time Streamer" voice is seemless. This series wouldn't be as remarkable as it without the skill and gravitas the cast bring to their roles.
I wish Amy Hennig would work with FromSoftware. They could then remake Soul Reaver with Hennig taking care of the lore and writing, and FromSoftware taking care of the gameplay mechanics side of things. Not to mention that LoK is dark fantasy, and we all know FromSoftware is pretty much the best when it comes to visualizing dark fantasy/horror. Back when I first played Dark Souls, the moment I reached Firelink Shrine, I'm immediately reminded of the Termogent Forest in Soul Reaver 2 or Defiance.
I love how when the reaver reactivates and awakens, Raziel explicitly says that it's now a sentient parasite, and will take the souls for itself, and even turn on Raziel, and then proceeds to be confused when he gets no health with reaver kills. Dude. It tells you point blank. Talk less, listen more. It helps.
Gotta do them in release order the first time through, IMO. BO2 after Defiance makes sense in terms of chronology, but Defiance was made as the capstone (barring future games) so should be experienced as such.
Soul reaver 1 was the worst in the series IMO, they had grand plans for it but sadly too much of it got cut and it ended up being half a game. Blood omen and Soul Reaver 2 are my favorite in the series, I hope you enjoy this one.
The scene at The Pillars is probably my favorite cutscene in all of gaming, the dialog is expertly written. It cements Kain, and to an extent, Raziel as some of my favorite characters.
its unbelievably brilliant.
Indeed. Excellent dialogue from 2 very intelligent characters, and one of the strongest confirmations that Kain's motivations are deeper than just petty jealousy.
The Blood Omen series is Kain's side of the coin, the Soul Reaver series is Raziel's side of the coin and the Defiance game is the edge of the coin.
I love how at the very moment Mapo first heard "The Heart of Darkness" all the memories and the trauma came back to his body
"- How do you equip this..." **the heart of darkness**
"- Im pressing all the buttons but..." **The Heart of Darkness**
"- Maybe if i- **THE HEART OF DARKNESS** **THE HEART OF DARKNESS** **THE HEART OF DARKNESS**
I haven't played the games in a while, but even I can't avoid the inevitable "*THE HEART OF DARKNESS THE HEART OF DARKNESS THE HEART OF DARKNESS*" playing in my head.
@@crust5909 This is so accurate and precious.
I knew you would love SR2. The lore drops in this game are *insane.*
Also, the "Edge of the coin" speech is one of my favorite speeches in games.

PROPERLY BASED COMMENT! BEST STORY EVER!

Bought this game so quickly when it launched. I never had a cliffhanger in a game before Soul Reaver.
This game mindfucked me so bad back in the day, in a positive way
After that intro, I'd happily go for an animated movie of the entire saga.

i forgot how awesome SR2 was. Its so fun to see someone genuine reacting to the wall of lore thrown at him :) - i cant wait to see your face at the end of Defiance. I quite a way till there, but im here to walk it with you. Its such an amazing story, and the ending has one of the biggest twists ever. Dont worry, im not going to ruin it by spoiling it, but i will answer one of your questions:
Turel, one of Raziels Brothers, was indeed missing in SR1.
I was hoping you wouldn't delay on starting this & you didn't disappoint. Probably my favourite game in the series. Agree?
I remember trying to play this game without having played the previous ones, it was... confusing...
Mapo this series is going to be a treat for you!
TH-cam recommended something on my frontpage that I actually want to see? Must be a manipulation by that damnable squid.
Yay!!!! *does a happy little dance* My favorite game in the series, and you like it!!!
I have never actually played this one, so I'm really excited for this!
im so happy that you are going through with this mate
The Necromancer Mortanius was controled by the Hylden to destroy the pilars of Nosgoth to enter on Nosgoth world on Blood Omen 1 but the problem it didn't went well because Kain destroyed the plans.
I've watched a couple of Lord's of the Fallen demos/reviews, and have been amused by comparisons to this game's shifting. It too has an Astral aspect
"What if we remade both Soul Reaver 1 and 2--?"
Me watching this after the announcement : 😂😂😂
I've made it to the credits, yay.
This was one of my first ps2 games lol
Something regarding the license for the franchise is apparently in the works - a remake/reimagining could supposedly be on the cards in the (near?) future....
Fingers crossed eh, but it has a lofty target to achieve.
Yeah they did a survey where we got to give our preferences for a new LOK entry. Really hope something good comes from it
Love the details of this game retconning Blood Omen, notice William the Just and Kain are facing each other while both holding a Soul Reaver 🙃
it's not really a retcon though? he was using the Soul Reaver blade in the actual game Blood Omen too, his blade even makes the same sound lol
BEST STORY TOLD IN A VIDEOGAME, EVER!
I hope the other max Payne games get played through. 2 and 3 are still great games in my eyes.
I'm looking forward to the rest.
never heard of that. Gonna play it :)
@@crust5909 halo was originally gonna be a sequel to it. Hiddenxperia did videos on it
Here we go Soul Reaver 2, lets goo
56:48 You called it xD
I really hope that I. The new entry to the series being worked on, they take the advice of all who answered the questionnaire to keep the writing and style of this one and defiance.
Michael Bell and Simon Templeman are still alive and willing to do another, though Bell must be in his 80s.
7:40 The switch between Richard Doyle's "Old Sage" and "Time Streamer" voice is seemless. This series wouldn't be as remarkable as it without the skill and gravitas the cast bring to their roles.
57:00 and they can blame the reduction in abilities on the ORB and soul reaver blade
I read they WERE going to do a completely faithful remake, except after five Tony Jay died, so they decided against it.
42:47 Turel was cut from the original soul reaver due ot time
if you are wondering what happened ot him, be patient and get ot Defiance.
It's a bit troublesome how the screen like pulsing zooming in and out of it's own.
It is nice to see the vents happen again
you think the sarafan were altruistic? i love how they subtly set that line there for the upcoming events later in the game
So, When you were playing Blood Omen, you didn't know if William The Just was wielding the Soul Reaver sword, and he actually was.
You're welcome, pretty sure I was amongst the first to recommend this series, if not the first 😅.
You definitely were! And how right you were I bet you feel very vindicated right now haha
It helps.
Legacy of Kain: Defiance next!
Blood Omen 2 is next
Indeed
Gotta do them in release order the first time through, IMO. BO2 after Defiance makes sense in terms of chronology, but Defiance was made as the capstone (barring future games) so should be experienced as such.
Mapo Gushing and Chefs Kissing that's what it's all about Baby 🙂
Which console are you playing this on?
The soul reaver is not missable in blood omen you have to get it
Can i play it with mouse and keyboard?
Play and experience Severance Blade of Darkness 2001 PC - classic
You should check out final fantasy X/X-2 HD remastered
Soul reaver 1 was the worst in the series IMO, they had grand plans for it but sadly too much of it got cut and it ended up being half a game.
Blood omen and Soul Reaver 2 are my favorite in the series, I hope you enjoy this one.
No game activates my nostalgia quite like this one.
