- The UK will hand over the Chagos Islands in the Indian Ocean to Mauritius after a decades-long dispute.
The government said the deal, which includes annual payments to Mauritius, would 'address the wrongs of the past'.
Slaves worked on the islands under British rule in the 1800s, and the entire population was forced out in the 1960s and 70s.
In return, the U.S. and the UK will get to continue running a naval base on the largest of the islands.
But Tory leadership candidates have called the decision "weak", "shameful" and "dangerous", while Nigel Farage branded it a "strategic disaster".
They have concerns that Mauritius could let their ally China use the strategically important islands, and about the future of the Falklands and Gibraltar.

The island belongs to Mauritius. Who agrees or not, legally Diego Garcia belongs to Mauritius. Whether inhabited or not the territory belongs to Mauritius.
Correction ..chagossians lived on Diego Garcia , there was no military base there back then. They were expelled to build the military base

Everyone missing the point that britain focibly removed the Chagos population from their island, put them on a boat and sent them to Mauritius. This happened during the night.

Procedures to return Chagos to Mts was initiated years ago in 2008 but the then gov in Mts was not assertive enough. Starmer has nothing to do with the decolonization process.Brt simply has no business renting Chagos isle, mainly Diego, to the US .

For your information, Chagos was illegally occupied by Britain. Now they have to pay compensation to the Chagossians as well as paying lease to Mauritius. Soon all the loots from India will also be returned.

The only reason it has gone back is because the US base will be allowed to remain. Reform and Cons pushed Brexit for Independence from EU. Now they are against another regaining its own islands.

The UK has done a TERRIBLE mistake, giving away such a high profile strategic locations.
Uk has done the right thing. It was long overdue. Now Uk has to pay compensation to the Chagossians who were deceitfully expelled from their homeland just so US could build a military base. Also UK should follow suite by returning all the loots to its righful owners.

I think vine and Co need to discuss the inability to differentiate an o from an 0 prior to ranting on other stuff.
