- Talk’s Alex Phillips is joined by former defence and foreign secretary, Sir Malcolm Rifkind, discussing the UK giving up sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius.
Mauritius will assume sovereignty over the Indian Ocean archipelago while the joint US-UK military base remains on Diego Garcia, the largest of the islands.
Sir Malcolm shuts down allegations that China will benefit from the decision.

When britishers talk of 60-70 years in the future, I wonder if Britain will even be in the list of top 20 economies or military power. The question that arises is, what interests britain will need to serve to keep such far flung islands in it's possession.

They were uninhabited islands claimed by France and later became British. Completely legitimate.
US embassy in Cuba had problems with sonic/microwave weapons - probably. Guantanamo is a prison, Diego Garcia is much more than that. Nice try Mr Rifkind.
It might even be just granting fishing licences to trawlers that display more than the expected number of antennae. No trouble at all to do that, and well within Chinese technological expertise
(What a confounded fool... imagining China is in some way not able to build hi-tech equipment. I would guess they are currently somewhat more capable in this than the UK... Maybe Rifkind is unaware that it is not the 1950s any more)

The UN gave a non-binding advisory note regarding Chagos. Something that can be safely ignored, even if you value the ruminations of the UN over the security of one's own nation.

Perhaps put off by Rifkind's bluster and authoritative tone... even though he was weak on content (just listen to the first thing he says: "it must be a fair deal because we signed it, were not in the habit of signing bad deals so it must have been a good deal" what a tit)
The agreement follows 13 rounds of talks that began in 2022 after Mauritian calls for sovereignty were recognised by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and the UN General Assembly in 2019 and 2021.
The world court, as the ICJ is known, is the principle judicial organ of the UN which adjudicates disputes between nations.
Before granting independence to Mauritius in 1968, Britain was found to have unlawfully separated it to form a new colony on the Chagos archipelago named the British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT).
The UK had initially dismissed UN rulings and court judgements demanding it return the islands to Mauritius, arguing that the ICJ ruling was merely an advisory opinion.
In splitting the islands from Mauritius, the UK expelled between 1,500 and 2,000 islanders so that it could lease Diego Garcia, the largest of the Chagos islands, to the United States for military use which the two allies have since operated jointly.
According to news reports, the UK falsely declared that Chagos had no permanent population so that it would not have to report its colonial rule to the UN. In reality, the Chagossian community had lived on Chagos for centuries.
The UK and US governments forcibly displaced the Chagossian population between 1967 and 1973 not only reportedly on Diego Garcia, but also Peros Banhos and Salomon.
The campaign challenging British ownership of the Chagos archipelago included the Mauritian ambassador to the UN, Jagdish Koonjul, raising his country’s flag above the atoll of Peros Banhos in a ceremony in February 2022 to mark the first time Mauritius had led an expedition to the territory since the expulsions.
Under Thursday’s agreement, the UK will still retain control of the UK-US military base on Diego Garcia.
