- The 5th Dimension was a huge dark ride at Chessington opening in 1987. It was originally created as a parody sci-fi trip through cyberspace. For its second year, Chessington reworked the ride with a simpler story followed Zappomatic through the TV on a hunt for The Gorg and this became the best known version.
This montage is edited from various donated video sources to cover the complete ride experience. I'll upload an unedited POV in the near future!

TH-cam really is the e closest we’ll ever get to a Time Machine. Fantastic. I LOVED this as a kid.
Chessington should make a museum of the relics of its previous closed rides like the Fifth Dimension, Terror Tomb and Bubbleworks (if they've got them stored somewhere) At least it would show a history to these now forever gone rides, how many remember them and showing newcomers what the old Chessington was in the 1980's and 90's.
They did create tombstones in the Transylvania/Wild Woods area paying tribute to old rides. It's on a long path going up to the Pirate Cove area. The tombstone for this ride says "Zappo Matic: 1987-1995. Sadly left this world for another dimension".
They also couldn’t do it because most of the props from the rides were either scrapped or sold. It would be a good idea though!
Omg I literally just thought of that like a theme park museum with all the items from closed rides in it.
I am feeling quite emotional after watching this! I have such great memories of The 5th Dimension! I can't wait to share this with my sister!!! :) Thank you so much for all of your hard work! Being able to see this again means a great deal!

I can assure you that you are not the only one.
Its so treasuring emotionally looking back at some dark rides that we went on, enjoyed and had very vague memories of, particularly in the late 80's to the late 90's when they were in their prime. It brings a childhood nostalgia back to us now as grown adults

This video got me right in the feels. Nostalgic and emotional. I remember when i was about 5 id always go on the 5th dimension countless times whenever we visited chessington. Was gutted when it was replaced by terror tomb.

It was my favourite ride in Chessington. I had a soundtrack tape of this and listened to it again and again. Thanks for sharing. I'm 42 now..
This actually gave me goosebumps. Took me back to when I was single digits.

So 80s!!!!! Love this it was so weird, I was only around 6 or 7 when I went on it... I just remember the huge plug at the beginning and the weird smell of the ride haha
There used to be a documentary on this ride but unfortunately it’s been made private. It had some interesting information about the ride and it’s backstory.

This was my absolute favourite thing when I was a kid. I seem to remember having a 5th Dimension brochure or guide or something (or maybe it was just a Chessington brochure) with pictures of Zappomatic and all the other animatronics. I really should dig that out of storage. It could be a useful piece of history.

Oh no major sad right now i cant find your documentaries anywhere its all i want to watch they were incredible?
They were taken down to be remade and expanded, supposed to be ready last summer but the pandemic really delayed the plan unfortunately. Im hoping they'll be ready by next summer when I have the time again and there are a lot of new ones being made too!
To be perfectly honest, this actually looks better than Tomb Blaster or even Terror Tomb (the worst out of the 3 rides in the building)

It is - after fifth dimension, it became terrortomb, and then it’s now tomb blaster. Its amazing how they changed the rides and kept the original track the trains run on

I went on this only once when I was younger and I never went on it again the 5th dimension for me was terrifying I didn’t like it I didn’t like when it went dark I really wanted to get off the ride but I couldn’t at the time.

Shame it wasn't a proper full POV rather than a theatrically edited version.
Few good quality, uninterrupted tapes exist because most commercial cameras could only record at short intervals at the time. It took us 4 years to find enough footage from old studio tapes to edit this complete ride-through, with as much detail as possible and the original audio which was thought lost for many years. After all, no video can ever accurately simulate the experience of going on the ride.
The story was truly awful. Of all the ideas they came up with this. Find the gorg while I make a gun... I'm still making a gun... Now shoot the gorg with this gun. I was always confused as a kid of why we were in a TV and why Zapomatic would make a gun that he could not fire.
It’s got an interesting story behind why it was like that, interestingly that wasn’t actually the story the ride started out with. Keep an eye out for a documentary we’re producing that goes into the ride’s making!
