Traditional Archery Tips - Broadhead Aiming

  • This week Clay Hayes is back with some more traditional archery tips, showing how to aim a recurve bow and arrow using the broadhead as an aiming reference point. The method used here is a blend of instinctive archery and gap aiming method. What's different about this archery technique is that you can use the top edge of a vertically oriented broadhead as a reference point to reduce the perceived gap at the archery target. This can make for a much more consistent aim.
Don't forget to subscribe to the channel. We're uploading a new video each week that features one of the following topics: archery, bow hunting, bow building, survival skills, bushcraft, self reliance, primitive skills, primitive bows, hunting, camping, fishing, and a lot more!

Hey Clay, I love all your videos as I am a new recurve archer hoping to start deer hunting this year. I live in the city and there are no archery clubs nearby, so just watch videos and practice in my backyard. It would be helpful to see you training a newbie on form and helping correcting any mistakes they are making.

@@clayhayeshunter Thanks Clay. Yes I keep forgetting that you guys in the States are locked into all these strict seasons and tags and stuff. In Australia here, we have open season and no limits on so many animals. Here in the desert where I am we have camels, donkeys, deer, pigs, goats, foxes, rabbits and a few more. I guess them all bring ferals, the government just want them all eradicated. What will you be hunting Clay when the season opens?

I would like to see a video on the differences between wood and fiberglass bows, and maybe pros/cons to each. I can never seem to find a good source that answers this question and I trust that you would have this knowledge.

Interesting topic. It’d be a tough one to nail down though. There’s so much variation in both glass and wood bows between makers it’d be hard to generalize.

Clay, so to clarify, are you aiming on the bottom dot, or the top dot?
Conceptually, I understand this method....but not clear if you're play the drop of your arrow, or this is your spot on at 15 yards. thanks Sir, love your stuff

    • @clayhayeshunter

I was aiming at the bottom dot. I put two dots on there because I wasn’t sure what my gap was going to be with that bow. I haven’t shot it much.

Is there some type of broadhead or some other tip that
will HOLD and be hard to pull out ?
    That is what I need.
I fly remote control foam airplanes that sometimes land in a tree.
I want an arrow with a tip that will pierce into the foam and hold
so I can pull the plane loose from branches.

Use a barbed fishing arrow and keep it attached to the reel. Maybe add some feathers so it can fly a bit straighter.

  • @ottovombaum2993
    @ottovombaum2993 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Have you tried different angles of the arrowhead before? Why do you not mount your arrowheads horizontally? This contributes to the fact that perhaps the arrow flies further or not? I am thinking about mounting a double-edged arrowhead on my arrows. Currently I have much smaller square ones on it. It does not matter how you put them on.

Thanks Clay for your amazing and wholesome content. My first video of yours was you collecting a elk collar near my neck of the woods. Since then I've watched many of them and will continue too. I have a question for you though and thought a recent video would be a good approach. I recently passed my archery education here in Idaho and will be taking it slow and patient as I already rifle hunt for my meat. I have little to no desire to hunt with a modern bow and I'm considering making one. I should mention I have a torn shoulder muscle and will probably need a lighter bow for endurance through practice than what I would like. My question is there anywhere between my house in Clearwater area and say CDA that I may pull back some privative bows to check if draw weight agrees with my shoulder? Thanks for your time and good luck this hunting season. -Z

The best thing would be to go to a traditional 3D shoot where you could test out some bows but most of that has been canceled for this year. The lowest I have is 45 but you’re welcome to draw it. Shoot me a message or email.

True instinctive shooting requires you to hold the bow with your strong hand, and focus with both eyes. Strong eye shooting came to be with sights right handers do not throw the ball with there left hand. and of course constant practice ,and a " left handed " bow

  • @Rajhamsa

Hello Clay, I have a question. Lately I have been putting a wrapping of thread around my arrows which touches my left index finger when at full draw. This way I have a sort of make shift, silent clicker which acts as a shot-activation queue. I reach anchor, increase my back tension until i feel the "clicker" go off and release. This worked well at first, but now I am starting to anticipate the shot-activation queue and have difficulty reaching full draw. I am shooting well but i fear that over time, i will start developing symptoms of target panic (like not being able to aim before i automatically release the arrow). Is this normal and is there a solution? Thank you for uploading helpful information like this.

Clay Hayes what about going back to field points? I’ve always use the silver line of the insert for aiming so it would be constant between target and hunting, but now this makes pretty good sense, I am a hunter first.
