Great vid I just purchased a ASUS KMCA-D8 for £45.00. Have done many T400's and X200's. I am also bidding on a cheap T500 going to try the Quad Core mod for that.
@@DeviceCastingCouchTechPodcast I have a W500 and if you're successful with the quad core mod I would love to learn from and try to reproduce your method with it. Subbed with the bell. Recently discovered your channel and love your content. Great Work!
I have done a quad mod for my T400. It was a dual gpu model so I suspect thats why the stock cooler was sufficient. Im running a qx9300 extreme and it works perfect.
According to the libreboot webpage, there is an issue when exiting text-only mode and loading in graphics. Does this apply to on board graphics only or GPUs as well ? anyknow know ?
this bootloop happened to me too today when i librebooted my x200 I figured out after 20mins i have two sticks of ram one 1333mt/s and one 1066mt/s and normal bios works well with it byt not libreboot i need two equeal sticks i guess BTW you can mod your ch341a with a solder iron and a single cable to make it run data pins at 3.3v
Fantastic. Thank you for the video. I want to build a similar home lab for running various services at home. Maybe little bit overpowered for my needs, but what the hey, does it matter if you can run Libreboot?
Keep in mind that these Opterons use Bulldozer-type cores, which means for floating-point calculations your core count is effectively halved. Whether that matters to you will depend on your use case.
From my understanding they should all work. Just note they may have various levels of compatibility. I found this out because I have a revision 1.05 and I found my RAM compatibility didn't match some of the compatibility known to work with revision 1.03G.
@@LifeModder Let me know how the 6376 CPUs work. The libreboot website says it has buggy microcode but i would like to here your experience. After testing a few I found HMT151R7BFR4C-H9 to work nice. The only down side is they are 4GB per stick. Also I found it didn't like being installed in the black slots. It will boot but and work but I found it to be unstable and for my server I like having constant uptime. So only using the orange slots it is now stable but I am limited to 32GB. In the future I would like to test some more RAM out and see if I could at least find some 8GB sticks
I use mine as a server and it has over 30 days of uptime. I have found stability is often effected by the RAM used. This is because the RAM init is not that mature. You have to be very particular with what RAM you choose.
If you plan on using libreboot or coreboot the max RAM that has been tested is 192GB. In the description I linked to the coreboot wiki and there is a list of RAM that has been tested to work. If using stock BIOS it can go up to 256GB of RAM and there is a Memory QVL on ASUS website that should be able to help you. Yes, a GPU can be installed on this motherboard.
@@jacksmith1098 I was able to use a GUI installer for proxmox with the onboard graphics in "txtmode". From my understanding that is only for the built in graphics if you install another GPU it should work fine.
Awesome job! I have this board revision 1.03G. At the Libreboot screen I choose to boot any Distro and I get the error "no irq handler for vector". I think my RAM combo could be the fault, so I've got some cheap RAM sticks coming. If that doesn't work then I'm clueless to what is causing the problem. If anyone can help please feel free to chime in if you have any idea what might work. Subbed!
So for 1.03G you should check the retired coreboot wiki it has a lot of know working RAM configs for your board. For IRQ it could also be your storage some SSDs don't always follow the ATA standard.
@@binaryfinary8256Looking at the coreboot wiki it mentioned microcode updates are required for secure operation. If that doesn't work you can always pick up a pair of processors in the 6200 series. They are pretty cheap on ebay.
@@binaryfinary8256 hi there i know this is old but if you update the microcode those opterons well work because i have the same onces running right now on the same board

I'm attempting to do the quad core mod as well. As soon as it is completed it will be uploaded to the channel. I'm glad you liked the video!

Hello, could I know which fans you changed to the heatsinks, that is, the exact Noctua model. Thank you.
I used the Noctua NF-A6x25 PWM for my heatsink fans. I would double check your heatsink and see what size fan it takes.

Will the ASUS KGPE-D16 Motherboard support Above G4 Decoding under this bios mod?
Are all KGPE-D16 motherboards compatible with Libreboot or do you have to get certain serials like the D8?

Same I want to do this too. Squeeze out some more performance and liquid cooling.
