UPDATE: I launched my own handbag collection, made in Europe using vegan canvas and chrome-free leather 😍 It's available here: www.justineleconte.com/elixir
I mean for ordinary people, if you like the style, buy the *preluxz* and enjoy it everyday without worrying about scratching it or dying it from you jeans. Use the extra thousands of dollars invest to yourself.Go to school, learn some instruments, travel abroad, save for retirement, charity works. Luxury is dying.
I feel like it would be helpful to see a middle of the road option in these kinds of videos. A brand who's bags are made relatively well that don't have the luxury label inflating the price.
I work at the Ecco. They produce their own leather that they also sell to luxury brands. So their leather bags are very good quality. The price can be anything from 100€ to 400€ depending on the model of the bag
The Chloé bag is absolutely worth its money! Once I was gifted a Mandarina Duck bag in the beautiful colour cognac, but the strap was missing because it broke. It was so expansive to repair the strap in Frankfurt (same price as buying a new Mandarina Duck leather bag) that the person owning the bag preferred not to pay it, since she wasn't working anymore and didn't need the bag for the office. So, once owning the bag, I wanted to let it repaired. I've been to several tailor, designer and bag maker, before I found someone in Hamburg who agreed to work with leather. Seems that not every designer likes working with leather. Lucky me, he was a professional bag maker who learned it as a craftsmanship. The only condition he had: I need to get the materials (leather, metals), basically anything to fix the strap on the bag. Also he gave me some locations of wholesale traders, it took me several weeks to find especially the 'right leather', means with the same structure and colour. The wholesaler told me that I was very lucky, because the same leather never exists twice. When I collected all materials and came back to the bag maker, he was surprised to see me, because he didn't expect to see me again. He didn't believe I would get the materials together, because the leather and the special metals for the adjustable strap I wanted were not the usual materials of our time, but of the time 30 years ago. Having this story in mind, I concluded that a good quality bag I is something very unique and personal. Since I have this hand bag, I've never looked for a new one. I just didn't feel the need to do it.
@@ShushaSofia well, if you would see the original construction then you would know why it broke. I can't show you an example because Mandarina Duck doesn't produce this kind of bags (with this strap construction) anymore. To describe it: It was a very elegant construction where straps went through slits directly inside the bag and were hold from the inside. Basically the hard leather of the slits reamed the the leather of the strips. But okay the construction hold for almost 30 years before it broke. I guess it's okay for a bag almost daily in use. When I let it repaired I asked the bag maker to change the construction to the outside, so the strap wouldn't ream. Now, it looks more edgy/contoured (not like pure elegance anymore), but I hope it will last me a bit longer than it did originally ;)
Love it. How did you manage to get all the necessary pieces and how did you find the bag maker. I know in Germany is very resourceful in sustainable energy and fashion
I live in a town in the northeast of Brazil where there is a huge leather goods industry. You find good handbags for a very good price. I bought a leather shoulder bag in a certain store, local brand, about 18 years ago and it is still perfect.
2 places I have travelled (no I am not an idiotic rich person but I am 65 so obviously have visited friends and been places .... Brazil brilliant burgundy suede jacket 25 yrs ago and Italy ... ok my Dad knew someone who knew someone. :) But it's sad that real craftsmanship is almost gone so I encourage it when I can afford it!
I’m a brazilian living in Europe for years and I never bought a bag here. I just wait to buy it in Brazil. We have the best material, design and prive!
I bought a gorgeous handmade leather tote bag from a local crafts person and still have it after 25 years. Looks great with age and can be easily repaired if needed.
Yes, I also have local crafts bags, leather, beautiful, timeless and one of the kind. That's why I think I will never buy a designer bag, it's too expensive and for me not so unique. It's beautiful though. In Poland we have few really good bag brands worth buying, good quality and price: Fabiola, Przywara-Strzalka. They are custom made and you can personalized them.
I’m guessing this is not a bag used daily because as someone who only has three bags (one being evening) so really two daily bags, my bags don’t last 20 years. Great quality leather will go for 10 years but the interior will need to be re-done. My mom and grandma have the same problems. With daily usage, the leather eventually does show some cracking too.
I still think that 1500 eur for a handbag includes huge profits for the brand and is not an amount I would “invest”. A handbag should be something practical, not something to loan money for. This is the price of my last car.
I agree that no one should be going into debt to buy a designer bag, however I want to point out there are people who earn a high enough income to afford a designer bags without going into debt
This series has taught me to examine everything closely before purchasing, including the fabric content label and details like stitching/hardware. I must look odd while doing it in the store, but I haven't regretted any of my recent purchases because of it. :)
Clearly each of these purses were intended to target different markets. It would be desirable to see bags constructed from similar materials that vary in price compared or go through all the qualities to look for on a single handbag.
When I lived in Italy I was surprised to see how many middle-class women owned genuine luxury purses like Louis Vuitton. They inherited then from their female relatives or invested their own money. For them, wastefulness was constantly buying cheap or middle market purses that wear out in a few years. They preferred to buy something that would last 20 years or more and was worth sending for repairs at a leather shop.
How about comparing a leather bag made by an artisan which is around 300 to 500 to a designer bag? I have seen designer bags that the wear and tear is horrible. My friend's Chanel bag feels like plastic.
@@dottieland7061 I buy a lot of my handbags second hand and they are perfect for what I need. I refuse to buy pleather bags, shoes, clothing as it is awful for the environment and it dries out after a few years.
I handcraft leather bags and concur. The bags I make are guaranteed for life. Many of the so called 'designer' bags are poorly constructed using cheap materials where they are not visible. All the connectors on my bags are reinforced beneath the leather with high grab strength cordura....not visible but very very strong.
The quality and design of the Chloe bag is fabulous, but most of us can't related to the price. I like how you compare quality of fabric and construction of fashion items. It's very beneficial for us consumers even when our budget is minimal.
I've seen very expensive bags with printing issues that wear off (e.g., LV with collab prints like with Kusama). Just because something is "luxe," doesn't guarantee quality. ;)
Once upon a time, luxury used to equal quality. Nowadays, “luxury” brands tend to stamp their names on way too many cheap items. I think it’s the buyers’s fault: they encourage the brands by purchasing cheap, low quality items and paying way too much for them just because they happen to have a certain logo.
Exactly! Last year, I purchased from a local designer a very unique handbag and she told me it was made by the same artisans as the Loewe. I own a unique bag (only one like this) from a local designer who uses high quality materials. To me, this is the definition of luxury.
Depends of course on the Person using the item. Sorry, but if quality would be bad, LV would not be so successful. Millions of people are just paying for a brand but don’t ask for quality ? I don’t think so. And I had a quality bag from another well known brand. When I had a problem with the bag they have fixed it for free and i got the bag back totally cleaned. I am not sure until today if they just fixed the bag or if they changed it with a new one. Service behind those brands is excellent.
Some well known designers lease their name to other manufacturers. They might retain a voice but it's often over design, maybe materials, but not workmanship. In return, they get money. Other design houses make several tiers of clothing in-house. I know Ralph Lauren did this in the 1990s ... the RL pieces you could pick up at an outlet mall were *not* the same as the pieces in the boutiques. Check all items for quality, not just the low cost ones. My current casual handbag is a synthetic canvas, fairly inexpensive, from Duluth Trading Company (best known for construction worker clothing). The fabric and hardware is top-notch and it was very carefully sewn ... I've had it over 4 years, use it often, and it still looks brand new.
Printed, embossed Leather is just no good I have wallet, that looks like it through a war and back on the outside, however the construction is pretty solid and designwise in terms of functionality, it is great. Another place is custom hardware, at least in midrange bags, I tend to buy(because I can't afford cheap ones outside shopping nets), I experienced that non custom hardware is better quality, unless the brand have a strict quality control on that, and save money in other places, like mostly egde stiched, but not fully. Also quality and price doesn't always match, as a child I had this neonpink paper straw bag, that lasted forever.
Even if I am not ready to buy any handbag(s) yet, I feel like going to the store and channeling my inner J and start checking the hand bags. Gotta apply what I learned in this video 😉 I’m glad you finally got your Chloé bag, it suits you 100%!
My region is humid. So leather quickly catches moisture, (despite of all precautions) and soon begins losing its rich look and feel. After a disastrous experience, I purchased a PU bag which was cost effective. I have been using it for almost 5 years. I am happier with a cost effective purchase than a luxury one 😊
I live in Florida humidity and all faux leather items (dress, blazer, jackets - all peel off after the year, no matter how and where I hide them. Only real leather takes it as a champ and nothing happens to it. So PUnis a total waste of money, while real leather and water snakeskin lasts years
@@SuperAnnetik thank you so much for your comment! Maybe by any chance you know about Louis Vuitton canvas and Florida humidity? I imagine it can hold up well
For this summer I got a large plastic Ted Baker bucket bag and I wore it all the everywhere. Come rain, shine, parties whatever.. nothing harmed it and it packed a ton. I would buy another though I love better quality leather bags too.
I would love that Chloe bag but honestly for that price I would be scared/paranoid to wear it out in fear that it would get damaged. Plus, I would rather buy a bag from an unknown designer or even handmade at a market as it is more unique.
If you worry about damage, ensure you do your research and go for a durable material and you’ll be fine! For example, pick something made of saffiano leather, calf skin leather, etc. and avoid materials like suede, lamb skin leather, etc. I own an LV bag that cost twice as much as the Chloe and I don’t worry about it getting damaged because it’s the classic LV monogram canvas that is super durable and very scratch resistant.
Great video! I bought a leather bag when I was in Honduras 14 years ago, made much liked the Chloe bag. It was $100 CA and the best purchase ever! The best part: the money went straight into the pocket of the purse maker. I always get compliments. Quality always speaks first on first impressions.
I am a handbag designer and maker myself, my bags have a lot of tooling and carving included thus more for customers who love the western style look. When I see other peoples bags I always check at first the edgework, the stitching and the quality of the hardware. A craftsman or a company who invests in these components usually invests in high quality leather too or respectively the whole bag "speaks quality" and you get high value for your money.
Hi everyone, if you want to watch the other video on investment bags (mentioned at the end), it's here: th-cam.com/video/PAwxM-O1gCU/w-d-xo.html Do you have a favorite handbag brand? Or a favorite handbag with its own story? :-)
Hi, Justine, what about the "affordable luxury" brands? Coach, Russel and Bromley, Longchamp to a degree, Fairfax and Favour, Bimba y Lola? I find these brands are very variable, some coach bags have beautiful craftmanship some don't, what do you think? I will forever lust for a black Chanel 2:55, maybe one day!
And yes, the prices are justified - the quality is superb and doesn’t wear off at all ( have had it 4 years) the leather quality on my Ferragamo is sooooo fine 🌹🥰
I would say my favourite handbag brand is Hermes and my favoyrite handbag from the brand is Kelly. There's this timeless ellegance that this bag has that is unique. If I can afford it at some point I am surely getting one for myself
Im really into handbags. Most people wouldnt think, by that I mean Id be interested in their sales-value, when in truth its because of their craftsmanship. I love the handbags from Ralph Lauren, because their shape holds up well and can look timeless. Also a more recent established brand I like, is Kozha Numbers. It takes a more modern touch and plays with the basic elements of bas. Some pieces take a very minimalistic turn :) I used to like aigner, coach and furla but their recent designs dont really speak to me. Nevertheless I believe their Quality is great from what I have seen in person. I just feel like the trend of big monograms became bigger. + Funky edgy prints take away a lot from making a bag speak through its form. I just feel like every other design company has to bring out a camera bag where the shapes are all the same but the monograms make the 'difference'. :/ I miss the sense of vintage bags where the shape dominates and the texture/textiles compliment it all over. Maybe Im very classic about that.... (I love the additional individual/more complex bagstraps a lot though! ... preferably without the name...) Sorry for my ramble 😊
These two bags are so different! They are on two different levels. You must have looked for two leather bags of different name brands. One a lot cheaper than the other one.
This is also really good advice for checking bag quality while thrifting or buying vintage! If you know what you're looking for, you can find some really great pieces!
I restore bags and am a vintage reseller, and for certain items I definitely see why the price is so high, but with others I feel like you just pay for the monogram and brand. Chloe have really unique, but classic designs. Lots of clever details! And there is nothing like the feel of Chanel lamb skin 👌
I want to know at what point am I paying for the brand name. How much does it cost to buy quality materials and construction (not necessarily a unique design or fashion brand ).
@@random-user-handle Plus this will cause extraordinary consumer confusion when actual plant-based leather becomes more prevalent and people won't be sure whether it's derived from cactus, say, or polyvinyl.
@@OfWavesAndWinds Technically, but increasingly we vegans are looking at the manufacturing processes and consequences of so-called vegan materials and seeing that it's not so simple as that. For me, a material that causes as much damage to animals and humans in its derivation and production as polyvinyl does not conform to my vegan ethics. For another vegan, the material substance of the product may be all that matters, and that's fine. I do think there will be more choice in the future and people will be making qualitative comparisons between plastics and plant hide and getting confused; it's inevitable.
As a big lover of designer handbags, thank you for this video, Justine. :) A few years ago I got tired of the endless cycle of buy-ruin-throw-away, because the bags I bought were cheap, PVC bags that fell apart after a few months. So I bought not even a designer bag, but just a good quality leather one. I bought it pre-loved for next to nothing, and I carried it for about two years, still have it and it's still in good shape. Then moved onto designer bags and never looked back. I only shop pre-loved, though, so I spent very little money on my collection. Right now, I have five luxury bags I absolutely love and carry all the time, and I can totally see where the money went when they were made. Your Faye is gorgeous! Wear it in good health.
I learn so much from your videos about how clothing, shoes, and accessories are constructed and how to look for quality items!! I’ve never seen anyone else do this kind of video. Thank you so much!!
Expected this for a long time ❤️ Would have been interesting comparing real Italian and Spanish leather bags made in the factories for Luxury brand houses at a lower price.
I once had an expensive leather bag that was a camel colour, soft leather. I cleaned it many times with saddle soap which kept it soft and beautiful. I eventually decided to have it repainted and it came back to me as a cardboard version of it’s former luxurious self.
I would love to see a comparison between the Chloe Faye and a leather Longchamp Le Pilage! The difference between those two will be much more interesting to me.
I found your channel at the right time. You speak about things that matter to me: timeless elements, quality vs quantity and how to navigate the industry from the inside. Thank you, Justine!
I've always found Desigual items overpriced for the quality they provide. Recently, I bought a bag from La Bien Hecha, a small Spanish independent brand that uses recycled leather and the bags are very good quality. :)
I love me a luxury handbag :D But there are many mid range brands which are also great quality like Coach, Furla, Liebeskind and Longchamp. For traveling I use those because I don't want to be stressing out about safety and getting something spilled on the really expensive ones. Those stay at home in their dustbag :)
I don’t mind paying for quality but I don’t like the markup for uniqueness personally. I’d not mind a completely plain standard hardware bag that was of very good quality. I don’t like completely custom things I personally would rather have something plain that lasts forever and never looks odd in different decades.
Health to enjoy your new bag. The most luxurious bag I have ever treated myself to was a Cambridge satchel. I don’t think it will increase its value but I really love - bit of nostalgia!
I’ve just made some investments in the last year. I sold off all of my cheaper bags and put some savings into buying. Chloe, two Aspinals, and three Mulberry bags. I made the choice to go second hand as it’s a little less expensive but also a lot more eco friendly. I’m absolutely stoked at my new bag collection and I feel like it’s my forever wardrobe now. Brilliant video again, Justine!
I love these videos of yours the most! I am just venturing into higher end bags. I bought the Le pliage based on one of your other videos. I don’t think I can justify the expense of a “true luxury” handbag but am better about looking for signs of quality over just a design I like, since I have noticed some cheap bags have great design aspects but are not produced with longevity in mind. Might not be an investment piece but it is worth the price I pay. Game changer, thank you!
I have three designer bags so far: a canvas LV Speedy 30, a YSL Lou Lou, and the Chloe Tao. Love them all and the difference in quality is noticeable from mass produced bag. My favorite thing about them, though, is I will own them for years and years and they make me so happy to use. I’m very grateful to be able to own them.
As a child, I remember being confused and somewhat embarrassed that my mother and grandmother would always turn everything inside-out and examine it. Thirty years later, looking back at photographs and they both look so elegant and immaculate.
Thank you Justine, especially for the tip to let the strap edges getting freshly painted at the shoe repair (same with shoes basically, after winter my leather boots always get treated to new heels/repair, my oldest pair gets worn every fall/winter since 10 years) even "stepping up" the hand bag budget a little is so worth it. Bought a "Liebeskind Berlin" 2013 (on sale, money was tight , I saved up) was stored for several years, revived last year, so happy I kept it. Another label I fell in love with is coccinelle, the designs are (to me) classic (Doctor bag, cross body satchel, small purse all black) my last purse( portomoneaie) was also coccinelle and lastet 10+ years. So there are beautiful quality pieces in every price range.
I have a genuine Longchamp pliage bag and a fake one. The fake shed plastic lining inside the bag and the handle stitching ripped . I find that cheaper real leather bags wear better than expensive faux leather generally. Usually the hardware on them isn't as good quality, but they last well.
While watching this video I've compared the polène numéro un nano bag that I have to just a handbag from Target and I notice all the same differences that you point out here! The target bag is cute and fun but it has all the flaws that you outline (that one would expect from a $28USD bag). Very educational!
The designer handbag is undoubtedly worth it! The superb craftsmanship, design and beautiful materials make it visually delightful to see, to touch and to wear. Your Chloé handbag is really beautiful. It lives in a completely different category from the high street models, and there can be no comparison, in my opinion. But of course, as you mentioned, there is place in our lives for the high street models as well. Not to mention the significant price tag! Thank you, Justine, for a very interesting and informative video, as always. 😘😘
Merci, Justine! I love handbags & appreciate getting such a close look at a luxury bag. That black Chloé bag is fabulous, made even better by your point-by-point comparison. My collection includes two tooled leather bags from Paraguay that I've had for more than 20 years. They've got a beautiful patina & just get better with age (& some care).
I bought a black canvas tote bag for £12.00 recently and I really like it. It holds a lot and there is an inside pocket for a purse or large phone. The bag has three inner press studs to seal the bag in wet weather. Many ladies will think this bag is laughably cheap but I really like it. 😃
Thank you so much for this video, you have the same name as my daughter! I love the relaxed manner in which you explain everything! I will share with friends. I do own a Desigual handbag but was $160 , about 6 years ago, here in Australia. It’s leather and fabric and I waited a couple of years before I bought it. It’s still as new! I love it’s bright colours and many pockets. I was surprised to hear yours was cheap, but now I see why.
I have used the same bag since 2011. It's a veal leather, hand made bag from a local artisan. I payed it 70€, and a couple years ago I payed 20€ just to restore the colour a little bit. I'm really satisfied with it, and it's the only bag I use on a daily basis! When it comes to elegant bags for ceremonies, I rather crochet them myself.
I use knitted bags (by my grandmother) or simple cloth bags because my everyday style doesn’t need any fancy bags or clothes anymore - but I love learning all these information from you so I can use when I rarely shop for quality bags, shoes and clothes 💙
Just bought my first Chloe bag (or any luxury bag) and I was able to get a great deal second hand. I absolutely love it and don’t regret the purchase for one moment. The quality was beyond what I expected and the design is timeless! Thanks for the informative video!
@@RainbowSunshineRain I really respect Justine Leconte more than any other TH-camr presenter in her field and she is also a designer so she is bound to report on her own field. Her own ethics are very clear; I think she owns 2 bags in total herself, one for laptop the other because she must .... great comments guys!!!
oh me too! Also , leather handbags are sooo heavy. Since I bought Christian Dior book tote I think i will never buy leather hand bag again. For one Chloe bag you can buy 28 other bags , so it is not worth money
@@tara5742 Justine and her great advice that we sometimes have found ourselves, why a wonderful channel. Cheers! I hope to keep all my things as long as possible and if a mistake, do my best. That sounds sanctimonious but my basic colours are black and white so I have a lot of fun with my small wardrobe, each one has a story. loved your post.
I recently purchased two Michael Kors handbags (the older Hamilton style) in black and grey second hand. They both together cost me less than half of what one of the bags bought new would cost and are both in wonderful condition! I now finally stopped looking for „the right bag“ - these two bags are perfect for me and have great quality that will last me for many years to come.
I’ve been looking at Chloé bags for years too and you just reaffirmed my decision. I’ve never purchased a designer bag before and it will probably be a few more years until I can afford it. But to me it is worth it to invest in luxury pieces that I will wear and love for decades to come.
It's obviously a personal opinion for everyone, whether it's worth it to buy expensive things or not. I have a Coach bag and I love it. It was not the most expensive one, but the style of it is absolutely gorgeous, I get a lot of compliments from strangers. The quality definitely worth it, no issues in the last 2 years, still looks like new. Considering that I only own 2 bags, it gets used a lot. The metal work is very good, leather looks lustrous with no scratches. I'm sure I can get several times the value of this bag, just because it will serve me for many years to come. And the feel of using and touching beautiful pieces - priceless...
So interesting. I'm gonna be a super informed shopper now. I was always a little sceptical about luxury handbags being worth the money, but looking at how well they are made and unique I've changed my mind.
Hi Justine. I would love to see how you would style: -a black or white shirt (both oversized and "normal" fit) -a blazer (again both oversized and "normal" fit) -basic trousers -regular/straight fit denim jeans -a basic white or black t-shirt And thank you very much for your videos.
I found a beautiful brand from India called Chiaroscuro that uses only upcycled leather. Their bags are far less expensive than designer bags, yet the craftsmanship is impeccable. I can feel the love and attention to detail that the artisans put into them, and in turn I love supporting their work.
@@ringwe yes, but there is a large gap between a €500 purse and a €2000+ purse. I for one would be interested in seeing some in the 200-1000 range, and comparing when are you paying for quality, and when it it for the name- they can't tell me that there is suddenly 8k of quality in a Chanel bag.
Coach Vintage, Yes! I recently called in to coach to verify a 2nd hand vintage bag in great condition...I was surprised to learn the serial numbers are made to reflect coach outlet vs coach. I was pleased to learn I had the latter. Great point.
Coach: very tricky, as they indeed produce low-quality stuff specifically for outlets... Absolutely not comparable with the quality you'd find in the actual Coach shops - beware! PS: other brands do it too, e.g. M. Kors, K. Spade, etc.
As a sewer I can make myself a Desigual bag equivalent anytime. The Chloé one though... I love Longchamps bags, which are kind of half way between the two, price and quality wise.
Thanks to you, I have a new respect for high quality materials. I invested in a very good red leather purse. I might save up to buy that Chloé purse. I could pass it on to a family member, as it would outlast me.
Have I ever looked at a luxury item, or purse like that? Nope. Not where I live. There are no stores, or boutiques where I live that would carry a hand bag like that. The closest we have are department stores that sell Coach or Michael Kors purses. I have seen some used Louis Vuitton handbags in a glass case, but, like I said, they were used. That’s about it. I really enjoyed the video. I learned a lot! Thank you! You’re the best!
I just bought my first luxury bag 3 weeks ago - a Loewe puzzle bag. It is just wow 🤩 like you Justine I had researched and coveted it for some years and am so happy I got it.
Hi! Nice video. Yes I bought two Piero Guidi bags when the brand was closing shop in NYC and for about a 100 dollars each, they were a steal. All the top notch stitching, hardware and leather accents are superb.
Excellent tutorial! A lot of times when I see someone carrying a branded designer brand I presume it is fake. Regardless of manufacturer, my ideal bag is a spacious shoulder bag, with dividers inside (not a cavernous interior with one too small phone pocket), a zip top closure, and feet. My bags were more fashionable when all I had to carry was money, lipstick, cigarettes and mints!
I'm a recovering purse junkie. What you say about workmanship is spot on. One knotted, loose thread can set the whole bag peeling apart. That Chloe bag! Don't you just want to sit there and pet it? Tip about a cheaper handbag: Pick a plain, classic shape in black. The darker color hides any design shortcomings. Make sure it's roomy enough because cheap leather doesn't stretch worth a ding-dong.
I used my Chanel for four years every day and it looks better than the day I bought it because it’s aged and softened into itself. Definitely worth the investment!
hasn't the leather worn away with that much use? i am looking for 2nd hand ones online and the corners/edges on like every single one of them are worn that i would never buy a 2nd hand one (the good condition ones are like the same, if not more, than in store prices) and if i bought one full price and that happened i'd cry 😂
@@steephaniieeeee the leather on the corners has worn but thats expected tbh, it’s minor and I prefer the well-loved look. I wouldn’t be put off spending if you can afford it and with second hand you don’t have to go through that stiff new bag phase where it’s so obviously fresh out of the box!
Thanks for the video. I am a leatherworker and make handbags...unlike fashion brands, mine are handstitched, fully traceable to the resource and 100% customizable. Still, nice to see how the over-priced "brand name" bags are making different hardware.
I have some beautifully made leather bags from $50-150 CAD. No they are not in the realm of a luxury brand, but this video makes it seem like you get garbage if do not buy luxury. It needed a 2nd low end bag to show you can get elements of luxury at an affordable price.
No, it's not necessarily garbage if it isn't luxury. I thought I made it clear in the intro: obviously the Chloé bag will win and it's not the goal of this video to demonstrate this...
(after watching a lot of sewing videos on youtube😁): I think it would be great if you did a video on the different sewing techniques that are used to sew the clothes you designed. For me personally, it was a real eye opener to see these different techniques, the amount of work that goes into things and also the way it made the clothes look totally different (way better!). It makes me appreciate and love well made items way more. Also, I find it to be so relaxing to watch 😂
Ohh, the bag is really lovely! I had difficulties in the past to find the handbag for me, so I sold everything I had. Now I carry a tiny crossback with me, I am very happy, but now I consider on looking for a good luxery equvelent 😁 thank you Justine ❤️
That black bag is right up my alley, so clean! I’ve never bought any designer (LV, Chanel, etc) but I’m always so impressed with brands like Chloé and Céline. If I’m going to buy such a pricey leather product, I want it to be made mostly of what it’s advertising lol. Thank you for this video, I’ll take your tips when I go searching for my first.
Note: with a brand like Chloé, you pay less "designer premium" than for e.g. Chanel or Vuitton, which cost more for the same quality (or sometimes lower!)
I have some beautiful handbags, but with covid and working from home, I stop caring them and I keep using some simple totes. Your video inspired me to pull them out to enjoy my bags. Also, the bag is gorgeous and suits you!!! Wear it in good health!!! Also, my friend saw me wearing your Ricochet ring and she loved it so much. I am getting another one for her Bday. Thank you!!! Its my favorite now!!!
I really enjoy your videos. I can say with absolute certainty that Chloe bags (SLG's and shoes) are well constructed and worth the splurge. The get better with age. Their wallets are a fave of mine. The leather wears well. The trick is to choose a style and size bag that works for your needs. Another brands I am impressed with the quality is Fendi leather bags. Their small "By The Way Satchel" is a fave of mine. I have grained leather versions. They hold a lot, they are as light as air and they wear well for every day use. Big enough for sunglasses, keys, phone, wallet and some makeup without being huge. You can personalize with additional straps if you have extra money to burn. And of course Celine bags. They are double in cost to Fendi By The Way bags but what can I say. They are perfection. Leather in and out. Simple. Elegant.
Just took advantage of Michael Kors and Kate Spade sales on their handbags. I paid a fraction of the price for all four. I just love their structural design. This is the first time I've had luxury handbags. It would be AWESOME if you did a video on how to care for them.
That Chloé handbag is absolutely beautiful! Impeccable craftsmanship is something I appreciate ❤️ Would love to see more videos like this Justine. Bisous
Dear Justine, thank you for this video. I love it when you do those comparison videos!😊 I just realized that I would find it even more helpful if it would be a comparison between a high end (luxury) item vs. a mid- price range (~300-600€) item. Because I think that the quality of the pieces might be pretty similar, so it would be interesting to see a detailed comparison on something like this. (e.g. there are high quality italian leather bags in the mid- price range) 💌👜👠👒
I always prefer quality over quantity. It’s better to have one good bag than ten cheaply-made bags. More closet space and it will last you many years. You would be happier and more confident! Get the best one that you can afford and enjoy!
I just got my first luxury handbag (Salvatore Ferragamo) for 105 euro secondhand. It was a vintage piece, with some damage where the hardware meets the leather strap, but otherwise in stellar condition. It is so unique and the craftsmanship just lovely. I will take the bag in to repair the damaged strap, and even if it costs another 100 euro the price would be worth it I think. I'm very into art, quality, and paying for craft, so I don't necessarily have any issue with buying luxury items if I can afford it. Would I buy brand new? Probably not, unless I become quite rich and find a piece that captures my heart. But the secondhand market has opened so many doors! I actually only got into buying lux secondhand thanks to your channel, and I've been super happy with the pieces I've got so far. My wardrobe needed an update, and I just hate fast fashion and being wasteful.
Thanks for sharing the tips related to finding quality handbags. Currently I'm not in the market for any bags but will use these points when purchasing new or second hand leather products. Avoiding plastic all together. Pineapple and mushroom leathers sound interesting.
I don't know about Chloe, but I have Desigual crossbody bag almost 5 years, using it almost single day and I am very satisfied with it, totally worth money for me ( who can not buy expensive bags :D ), and I like that desigual bags has many pockets and separated spaces.
I was thinking the same thing. The price range here was to wide. But, I guess she was trying to show us what to look for.
@@vintagegal5616 they are still 300-600+$$$
I work at the Ecco. They produce their own leather that they also sell to luxury brands. So their leather bags are very good quality. The price can be anything from 100€ to 400€ depending on the model of the bag
MCM is made in Germany and they are great bags. Also Coach and Kate Spade of course.
You might want to consider Polene and Linjer - both are lovely, lovely brands with very good quality bags and gorgeous designs.
I just didn't feel the need to do it.
beautiful story :-)
How strange that it broke 🤔
Thank you for sharing your story! I am happy for you!
Love it. How did you manage to get all the necessary pieces and how did you find the bag maker. I know in Germany is very resourceful in sustainable energy and fashion
Dear Justine if only you know the joy you spark in us. With that "hi everyone, it's Justine"..... I'm already smiling ear to ear. ❤
I live in a town in the northeast of Brazil where there is a huge leather goods industry. You find good handbags for a very good price. I bought a leather shoulder bag in a certain store, local brand, about 18 years ago and it is still perfect.
The same here in León Gto. México, I can get a very good leather handbag for 100 euros and lasts for 10 years.
Nowadays is much more about the label you are carrying on. I still do prefer no labels on it and good quality. 😀
@@idalinawin me too
I’m a brazilian living in Europe for years and I never bought a bag here.
OY!!! Watch the Financial Diet!!! Great channel.
I agree that no one should be going into debt to buy a designer bag, however I want to point out there are people who earn a high enough income to afford a designer bags without going into debt
I agree completely. And I could afford a 1500 eur for a bag; but I think it’s not necessary to spend that amount of money. But to each it’s own .
Yes, this!! Amen to that
I have a saramanga satchel which is fair trade and not made in a sweatshop like many designer bags are made it got me through university 15 years ago!
@@dottieland7061 I buy a lot of my handbags second hand and they are perfect for what I need. I refuse to buy pleather bags, shoes, clothing as it is awful for the environment and it dries out after a few years.
@@dottieland7061 Scaramanga looks like great stuff!
Indeed I waited a long time, I was sure I'd like this bag, and now that I have it, I do. That's how I see a "good" fashion investment!
I'm tempted to look at some bags I have just to see if they can be Justine approved 😊
@@IevaKambarovaite haha! Same thoughts I have when I am purchasing something (not just bags) 😆
@@annet4539 ah those plastic Ted Baker designs you mean? They look soo cute!
Thanks for sharing your experience
@@0neAutumnLeaf Thanks for the tip!
It would be great to compare italian, greek and spanish leather goods in a video! You raise the bar with your work Justine, very qualitative!
Great video! I bought a leather bag when I was in Honduras 14 years ago, made much liked the Chloe bag. It was $100 CA and the best purchase ever! The best part: the money went straight into the pocket of the purse maker. I always get compliments. Quality always speaks first on first impressions.
That luxury bag is gorgeous! I can see why you wanted to buy it. So happy that you did. I hope it serves you for many many years.
Hi everyone, if you want to watch the other video on investment bags (mentioned at the end), it's here: th-cam.com/video/PAwxM-O1gCU/w-d-xo.html
Do you have a favorite handbag brand?
I have a Chloe bag. I love it! It’s still gorgeous after several years.
Some pieces take a very minimalistic turn :)
I used to like aigner, coach and furla but their recent designs dont really speak to me.
I miss the sense of vintage bags where the shape dominates and the texture/textiles compliment it all over. Maybe Im very classic about that....
(I love the additional individual/more complex bagstraps a lot though! ... preferably without the name...)
Sorry for my ramble 😊
These two bags are so different! They are on two different levels. You must have looked for two leather bags of different name brands. One a lot cheaper than the other one.
This is also really good advice for checking bag quality while thrifting or buying vintage! If you know what you're looking for, you can find some really great pieces!
absolutely!
I bought the same leather quality for under 200€, but without the brand name.
Am very happy with it and I don't mind wearing it for any occasion.
Thanks for taking care of us! I have found the $300.00 range often gets me great quality with a reasonable splurge price.
I dont understand why people call "vegan leather" to plastic. Theres nothing vegan in plastic 🥴. Thank you for you video ;)
It annoys me extremely when I see “vegan leather” articles made out of plastic. But hipocrisy sells, that’s why.
@@random-user-handle Plus this will cause extraordinary consumer confusion when actual plant-based leather becomes more prevalent and people won't be sure whether it's derived from cactus, say, or polyvinyl.
Plastic is 'vegan' because it's not an animal product.
If someone doesn't want to harm animals, why buy plastic which harms the environment? Makes no sense to me at all.
Always happy to see one of your new videos pop up! I watch everything you produce, because I always learn something. 💝
Awesome! Thank you!!
I am big fan of luxury designer bags, and I never regretted investing in it. They hold so well and I always feel classy when I wear them
I once had an expensive leather bag that was a camel colour, soft leather.
A video about those new materials like the leather alternatives made of mushroom and pineapple a.o. would be great!
You are literally my favourite person on TH-cam. There is so much value in all of your videos, thank you so much!
I agree! I don't know that brand, I will look into it! Thanks!
Thanks for the rec, I'm loving their Encarna bags!
Such a great collection of vintage/pre owned bags! A vintage HIDUPZ is definitely also on my list
Investment is like an index fund or a rental property, certainly not bags.
That Chloe bag is stunning 🤤 thank you for helping us understand the craftsmanship behind constructing a bag like that!
I have a genuine Longchamp pliage bag and a fake one. The fake shed plastic lining inside the bag and the handle stitching ripped . I find that cheaper real leather bags wear better than expensive faux leather generally. Usually the hardware on them isn't as good quality, but they last well.
Do you know "minuit sur terre" ? The New cruelty-free materials are great quality and very durable. Please stop judtifying animal cruelty, it is 2021
While watching this video I've compared the polène numéro un nano bag that I have to just a handbag from Target and I notice all the same differences that you point out here!

I bought 2 luxury bags second hand, one evening size Pierre Cardin new, and one large day wear YSL well used , love them !
And thank you very much for your videos.
I found a beautiful brand from India called Chiaroscuro that uses only upcycled leather. Their bags are far less expensive than designer bags, yet the craftsmanship is impeccable. I can feel the love and attention to detail that the artisans put into them, and in turn I love supporting their work.
Your videos about looking for quality construction elements are some of my favorites!
My favourite option: Buying good mid-range bags like Coach vintage!
For many people Coach is luxury.
@@MJohannaS89 great point
No, Longchamp leather bags are very expensive.
@@OfWavesAndWinds less than Chloe or other luxury brands, more like hundreds euros than thousands
I feel like this is my sign to start saving for a Chloé Mini C Bag that I've wanted for so long😂 x
Watching Justine point out all the features of the Chloe bag made me want it too, haha
I love Polène bags - style, quality and prize are perfect 🌺
LOVE Polène!
I have been considering a Chloe bag for years. Totally worth it in my opinion, it’s going to be my next gift to myself.
@@justineleconte “paying for the name” indeed.
You had me at that extra cuff. Can’t tell you how often I’ve had that clasp open on different bags.
That Chloé handbag is absolutely beautiful! Impeccable craftsmanship is something I appreciate ❤️ Would love to see more videos like this Justine. Bisous
Vintage for me. Beautifully made, beautifully aged, great value.
Dear Justine, thank you for this video. I love it when you do those comparison videos!😊
I just realized that I would find it even more helpful if it would be a comparison between a high end (luxury) item vs. a mid- price range (~300-600€) item. Because I think that the quality of the pieces might be pretty similar, so it would be interesting to see a detailed comparison on something like this. (e.g. there are high quality italian leather bags in the mid- price range)
