Thanks Ron. Got my 38900 plus 2 inserts from Amazon for $207 plus $36. Checked all threads. Install took a full day because I'm slow. Also my compressor is wimpy and I waited until it came back to 140 psi several times per cylinder. I also washed with carb cleaner. Clean, Clean and Clean. I used full thread JB Weld and kept it warm for 24 hrs. Torqued to 25 ft-lbs. I can't believe I drilled holes in my engine! Runs great.
I have a 2000 Expedition with a 2V 5.4L engine, that just turned 237,000 miles. Has never had a blown out spark plug, but I did overtorque one of them and it stripped out the thread. Nice to have these videos to see which repair kit works the best. Thanks much !!

I have a 2v 4.6 2004, drilled out broken spark plug, and a peice of the Calvin kit is stuck in my heads and i can get a magnet on it but the 2v drill hole is too small to fetch it out so would drilling out a 3v hole in my 2v to get the piece out work? It would definitely give me more room then the 2v hole but what insert can i put back in my 2v after drilling out for 3v hole but still fit 2v spark plug? Please help or links to kit!!
Great information about shops and individuals putting the wrong calvan insert, 38900 for the 2 valve, good idea to specify and verify with screwing the spark plug into the proper insert. Especially if a Dorman pipe threaded kit was used prior to repair, the visual of the 3 valve plug could have the mechanic or machinist picking the wrong insert.
I'm currently working on a 2007 F150 4.6l with a blown out 14mm plug. Cal Van shows the 2v kit is only applicable for '96 to '03 which caused some initial confusion. After doing more research and realizing that the 96 on up 4.6l use the same 14mm plug I ordered the 38900 which is working as advertised.

Still have 10 minutes left in this video but you didn't add the link at wise auto. I did go to the site but if you get a kick back from him I will wait for a referral link so they know who sent me there. I called you today and got the voicemail. After listening to it I then came here to find out which valve engine I have. I'm going to double check it tomorrow but it looks like I probably have the 2 valve. I have a 2001 5.4L expedition Eddie Bauer edition with 4WD. Thanks for all the information and I'll wait to hear back about the link. If not I will just call them there and order one. I was just quoted $225 to fix my number 2 cylinder. I have already had another blow out too but it didn't strip the treads. Instead of paying someone to fix it I would rather do it myself and then i will have the kit when it happens to another one. Thanks again and keep up the great work.

Thanks for all your info. I have 2001 Excursion with the 2vlv v10 . Do you use the steel inserts in the Calvan kit or would the Stainless steel inserts work better? Also when I looked for the JB weld their is a lot different compounds. What type do you use?
Yes you can just remove coil and pull the blown plug then unplug injector to drive it after it happens to get home. It will sound bad because you will be pushing air out. But you can 100% pull the plug and drive home
Is there a kit for a hole that already got fixed once and the hood has already been drilled to 11/16 once. For 2v I believe my hole is 5/8” will the 11/16 be big enough?
While these steel inserts work, they create a hot spot in the cylinder. Mmr or one of the companies that does a lot of race stuff with mod motors uses a aluminum smaller time sert that works better and can still be done in the car.
Without the hat on the top of the insert I have seen many timecert blow out around threads. Also I have never seen any of my inserts fail after install.

Hello Sr. I really appreciated the video, I was about to still the cheap way insert from napa.i have a 2000 ford expedition so what cal van insert I need to order the 2 valves or the 3 valves .thank you for your time.
Hi, would you please help me on this. I have a Toyota Sequoia limited 2006 with spark plug popped out. It has 4.7 L ( I think 4 valves). I Like to use the Cal van kit if I can. The spark plugs are M14-1.25 and the head of the screw of spark is 1.5 or 1.6 millimeter. Would you please let me know what kit and what insert do you recommend. Thank you
On your vehicle a regular save a thread insert is ok to use if installed properly. The calvan kit was designed specifically for Ford Triton engine.. Make sure to follow instructions carefully. Good luck 👍
Please clarify, You say several times "Motorhome" have the 2 valve heads. Are you referencing E350 E450 Class C or the F53 Class A. I have read that the 2006 and newer F53 Class A are a 3 valve head.
Here is what I know. The 3 vale triton that was introduced in 2004 was a VVT (variable valve timing) engine. It was a fuel economy design and was not meant for pulling loads. I have never seen one in any Van or Motorhome or f250 and above ever. If you think you have a 3 valve VVT engine then it will have aluminum valve covers and will have an electrical connector on top of the front side on both valve covers for the solenoid. I personally was hired by a friend of mine to look at a brand new class A at the end of 2019 because he said the brochure said it had a 6.8L 3 valve. Well after having the sales person let me take a peek under the hood I found it was the same old 6.8L 10 cyl. its always been. (and yes the still blow pugs) I just did one with only 16,000 miles and it was built in 2018. I hope this helps.
I have Question anybody is welcome to answer. I am using the cheaper save a thread spark plug repair kit. I put the spark plug in the heli coil and started screwing it into the newly tapped hole. I am worried about screwing it in to far. Is that possible or would the plug stop before that happened? Any replies would be awesome. Thank you
Your worry is justified that the save-a-thread can be screwed into the cylinder. If your engine is a ford 2 valve, specify your inquiry "if the shop has a Calvan 38900 insert and kit for the 2 valve" one point Ron makes in this video is he has many calls about shops installing the wrong Calvan insert. Make sure the insert and match it up with the proper spark plug, ask them to go through the procedure, listen to all of their steps, let them finish speaking, then ask for details like JB Weld and loctite 271. If the shop catches an attitude, tell them many reports on the internet that shops installed the wrong insert, and the spark plugs are very different, we need to be sure.
I read the 2009-10 is best Triton is that true and is it 2 or 3 valve? Never had issue with spark plug i always properly torque and use good anti seize on mine how do i know if mines 2 or 3 valve
I will take a 2 valve over a 3 valve engine all day long. Even after Ford redesigned the heads somewhere in late 2009 and went back to a one piece spark plug the VVT TIMING issues still financially break most people when they fail.
@@SandCarServices so 2009 is 3 valve? Also the 2 valve dosent have the vt Selenoid switch? Im asking because im considering selling it Although I've never had any issues with the truck and the mileage is a little over 160000 these problems could start occurring. I'm just trying to abate a problem before it happens. I can't find anywhere if mine is the 2 or 3 valve. I'm guessing mines the 3 valve it says 24valve on my info so i was thinking i have the 3 right?
@@tgshort7638 your asking me to ID an engine I can't see. They still make the 2 valve in the 6.8 V10. Mostly put into motorhomes. One of the easiest ways to help identify a 3 valve is the valve covers. The 3 valve engine in the trucks will have aluminum valve covers with a VVT actuator sticking out of the top of the front valve covers. The 2 valve have plastic valve covers.
@@SandCarServices I thought you would know by the year mine is 2009 i thought since mine says 24 valve and its 8 cylinder it is 3 valve per cylinder am i thinking right also it has the vt selenoid switches on front. Anyway been researching my truck and am now afraid of it even though it runs fine so many horror stories on the 3 valve.
I have a 2008 F-150 4.6L Are all Triton 4.6L engines 2 valve? Is so, the correct spark plug for these engines the smaller one piece plug? Thanks. EDIT: I should have waited to the last 2 minutes of the video where you mention 4.6L. I try to make informed comments as best as I can. My truck has 177K miles on it, and I'm going to do a tune up, and I know that the plugs have been in there at the very least since 60K. I am getting raw fuel smell through the A/C system when the recirc valve is open (fresh air), which I assume thats a lose plug. There is no fuel leak that I can detect.
Have your vehicle checked by a certified mechanic because raw fuel smell like you get pumping gas is a leak before combustion! There is a different smell after combustion
The 14x1.25 spark plug holes on the F150 only have very short threads at the bottom despite the plug being a long-thread design. It's supposed to make assembly easier. It's a horrible design.
I was looking at a nice well taken care of Expedition... with a V10... Thank You very very much for convincing me to never purchase a FORD with a V10 .... this saved me a ton of anger and grief. No FORDs for me. Why does FORD even hire engineers? Are they that stupid? Design an aluminum head without enough threads for the spark plugs....? Did they do this to save machining time..??? what jerks
So, I'm not sure what you were trying to convey at the end of this video but you sort of contradicted yourself when talking about the 5.4 VVT engines and the 6.8 in a motorhome. You mentioned that your friend Rich who is also your customer (client) was looking at buying a new or almost new 2018 or 2019 motorhome with a 6.8 engine in it but then said that the motorhomes never came with a VVT engine. Well, based on what you said in the video, the brochure said that it was a 6.8 liter V-10 3-valve Triton engine. But then you said that if you have a V-10, it's a 2-valve engine. What are you talking about here? Are you not aware that after 2005, they made the 3-valve 6.8 V-10 available in motorhomes? Just because the brochure said it was a 6.8 V-10 DOES NOT MEAN that the brochure is claiming that it is a "VVT engine". It just simply means the brochure is stating that it has the 3-valve Triton 6.8 V-10 engine and nothing more. THIS DOES NOT MEAN THAT THE BROCHURE IS CLAIMING THAT IT IS A "VVT" DESIGN. Which, if it does have that engine, it WOULD NOT BE inaccurate information. So, why are you mentioning that the VVT engine was put in the motorhome and bringing up the brochure as if the brochure is suggesting this when based on what you stated, it never did suggest this? If the brochure isn't mentioning anything about a "VVT engine", then why make it sound as if the brochure was lying or giving inaccurate information when it wasn't? The 3-valve engine was put in motorhomes. It may not have been put in the E350 and E450 vans but motorhomes, yes. Vans are different than motorhomes. I believe the 3-valve was not installed in the vans due to size limitations. At least according to the info I have seen. I haven't personally seen with my own eyes if the 3-valve 6.8 V-10 from Ford was put in motorhomes but I'll just have to accept that the info online is correct at this point.
I don't agree with you with that kamikaze kit, because that is what I used back in 2012 and did not give me problem until 2019 20,000 miles later it leaks and throw a po 171 so I replaced it again and still holding up to this time. There is another guy in yutube that uses the same thing and get the same results that I get using Dorman kit.
Well I guess all these damaged cylinder heads are a figment of my imagination. And all the calls I get from blown kamakazee inserts aren't real either. The bottom line is some have success and when they go bad they can ruin your wallet. But 10 years of seeing this in my shop is all the experience I need.
Thx for the awesome info!!! I have a 1997 e150 5.4 w 50,000 miles, so far so good. But now I know where to get the correct parts from. Thx to you

I thought you would know by the year mine is 2009 i thought since mine says 24 valve and its 8 cylinder it is 3 valve per cylinder am i thinking right also it has the vt selenoid switches on front.
Can I use the 2 valve Cal-Vans kit on a 4 valve Cobra mustang
Not sure, never tried. But it was designed for the modular engine
What about the 4v?
2v 5.4l BLOCK vs 3v 5.4l BLOCK
Only comparing blocks is there any difference?
I have a 2004 f150 5.4 tritron engine 3valve,buy a 2003 Ford Expedition 5.4 tritron 2 valve Engine ,will the 2 v work in truck that have 3 valve?
Can someone please tell me how to tell if a f150 has a 4.6 2valve or 3valve
I didn't all 8 in my 2001 f250 5.4 2v .
With not a problem.
Calvan or nothing.
The 14x1.25 spark plug holes on the F150 only have very short threads at the bottom despite the plug being a long-thread design. It's supposed to make assembly easier. It's a horrible design.
put the sparkplug in the insert first
I was looking at a nice well taken care of Expedition... with a V10... Thank You very very much for convincing me to never purchase a FORD with a V10 .... this saved me a ton of anger and grief. No FORDs for me. Why does FORD even hire engineers? Are they that stupid? Design an aluminum head without enough threads for the spark plugs....? Did they do this to save machining time..??? what jerks
Expeditions did not have V10's. Excursions did.
I got my kit from wise auto
Triton 2 valve vs 3 valve Calvan differences.
Why would you ever need to put an insert on a three valve?
Excellent question! But they happen. I believe it's due to damage to threads when the 3 valve spark plugs get stuck and are forced out or broken off.
Mid 2008 redesigned
Leave it to Ford to make it stupid
your years and info are all wrong. I have an 06 5.4 2V non variable timing motor
