John, this series with Art and Cleopatra is AMAZING! I have 25 years of experience with 2 separate Dobies, but I've NEVER seen the training aspect of Dobie-obedience. We would put a raised finger in her face ☝🏻 and tell my 2 girl Dobies,"No Ma'am! You no bite! No Ma'am!" (More of Art and Cleopatras' journey please.) P.S. When Kongs were eventually invented, we'd put peanut butter in it and my Dobie would go to town on it.
Cleo is a beauty ! I lost my 12.5 year old " Kona" a year ago, she was a Doberman/ Dutch Shepard mix and she was my beautiful,tough, stubborn, loving, and my protector. She could chew through anything, she did a scissoring action which was something to see. I will definitely get another Dobie soon. My greatest advice to anyone is to have a fenced yard because she was definitely highly energized.
I absolutely love this series! Not only is it so helpful to these individuals in the videos but the general audience is able to learn somethings as well. Art and Cleo are so sweet. Can't wait to see the next adventures!
Ordered two of the beef Nylabones. I have two 5 YO male Malinois and two female 18 month and 5 month Dobermans and they couldn’t be more different from the Mals. I fell in love with the breed while watching your channel. Took a few years before I took the plunge.
Another great episode, John! Overall great advice for Arthur, but I would like to add a couple of things which I think are helpful. In one of the first scenes Cleo was biting his hands while he was sitting on the sofa. This was just extended play for her, especially with him slapping his hands at her like this. She didn't understand that he wanted her to stop. Personally, I would completely stop letting her on the sofa as this stage in her life. The advice to immediately stop, turning the back and ignoring her when she starts nipping, is great but I wouldn't hold up the toy. This just encourages jumping and potential nipping again. I would suggest to hide it (either in a pocket or get a training vest or apron). Also important: once she is doing what you want her to do (= stop the biting), you need to let her know (tell her "good girl, pet her, toss her the toy). This needs to happen in a timely manner. Most people forget about this. Another good thing is to let the dog know what is coming, for example time to play (or work or something). You can say practically anything but have to stick with it. For example "Let's play". Once you're done, pick another command like "We're done." This will also reinforce the leadership roll. The leader decides when it's time to play and when it's over. One last thing for this comment: I strongly encourage puppy owners to keep a (thin) leash on in the house as well (except of in the crate). If you need to stop them from doing something or reinforce a behavior, there's something you have to grab or step on. Nothing is worse than trying to catch a mischievous puppy running all over the house. And it's just a game for the puppy which reinforces the behavior🙂
John, we sure could use help with our 3 year old, Molly, issues are barking at everything, pulling, it's like she goes into "protection mode". We have tried turning around ,going the other way, she constantly turns her head watching the rear.😢
A couple of questions on my male 18th month old Doberman. He gets rougher the more I say No. He gets super excited when we leave the fenced backyard to go freely to the barn. He nips ankles all the way and we fight all the way to the barn. I carry a stick with me because he can bring blood. He jumps on people and us. I'm so worried he will get out and visit our 80 year old neighbor. It would not end well. Basically he has no respect for us. He also has learned that he can lay down and I can't get him up when he is asked to go in pen in the house or get in the tub. He has to be forced with my husband picking all 85 lbs of him up. How can we regain control?

The other day she had picked up a bird in her mouth that had fallen from a nest. "Drop it" command did not work. I squirted her with a water bottle and she dropped the bird. When it comes to toys, it's the same thing except at the beach. At the beach, she loves retrieving a toy from the water so much that when she comes back in ashore, she will drop the toy voluntarily on the sand so I can throw it back out into the water again.

Think the long toys are great for interacting with Art as it'll be obvious when she's not on the toy. Think there might be some mixed messages there with just kidding and the hand in her face like bite me. I know he was trying to recreate the scenario, just something to keep in mind. The satiation method of chew toys on the ground for when she does want to chew. Making them more attractive , even if that means dipping them in bacon grease before freezing, so she'll actually prefer the numbing toys rather than his hands or clothing. If he saves the long toys for just the 2 of them, so it gets put away once play time/interacting/training is over. Use that play as a reward for throwing in a sit, but as soon as the butt hits the ground, it's get it! Slam the toy on the ground. The quicker he can do that, the quicker he'll get fast sits. Mix it up, not always a sit, or you can even just become boring, not say anything and see what she gives you. Each time you become boring, she offers a different position. Hope that helps.
My last two Dobermans couldn’t swim. My next one I’d like to teach him to go kayaking with me - do you think this will be possible? I would get him a life jacket. My last one was deathly afraid of water and not sure why. Are all Dobermans afraid of water?

Hi, no, not all dobermans are afraid of water. Did you try positive association? For example, retrieving toys with food inside of them, over time your dobie might get water associated with toys/snacks. Also, start with the low (shallow) levels of water, and once she overcomes that fear, slowly go deeper. Also, for deep chested dogs like dobermans swimming might be more awkward, it's often easier for them to run rather than swim. ♡
