When you think about how they build the hives whoever worked it all out had good knowledge of how bees live. I find it really impressive, there are some clever people out there.

All our beekeeping suppliers in Canada sell them. I'd think they would be available in Texas too.

Oh boy, black pj's. You are daring bees to sting you with those on! :)
We work in light colored clothes. We have nice bees but do still get some stings. Beekeepers need some stings to stave off developing a worse reaction!

Hey Paul I’m in Nova Scotia would you say running doubles is better than running singles ? I know both can be done but what would you run I keep my bees outside in poly hives
We use singles exclusively. We have two videos outlining why and all our videos show the use of singles in our operation.
Are you worried if the queen cell doesn’t take and the hive make their own queen? Reason I ask is that walk away splits seem to be in the process of being made an illegal practice here in Queensland, Australia. The thought is that walk away splits are more likely to be aggressive and more likely to swarm. I personally have not found this to be true, but wonder if you have experienced this?

Thanks for the great question.
Most times the queen cells we introduce take and we get a mated queen. The emergency reared cells don't make the best queens but we don't get very many of them and we requeen these colonies when possible.
I agree that walk away splits are a bad idea. You might find our video 'Why Buy Queens' interesting.

When you can Raise Queens. Aka you have Warm Weather, Spring* to late Summer * Eggs, good number of Bees (making that Royal Jelly) and of Course you need : 'Drones*' (boy Bees) to Mate those New Virgin Queens ! If you don't have the above*...Splits or Nucs won't be possible.
Unless you buy in Mated Queens (expensive) and goes against what Paul is teaching here... Raise your own Queens !😉

Here in Scotland 🏴 Nucs can be made from May to say early August. (A Nuc needs at least x6 to x8 Weeks to build up.
So if you do it to late in Autumn, you might get poor Mating of that new Queen, or the Colony is not strong enough to survive a cold Winter (!)
You might be in a Sunny Warm place.... So your heads up on Nuc making.

We make up nucs during the time of year that bees naturally swarm. For us that is mid May to early June.

Is there not like a Summer "camp" we can pay for, and come to Canada eh (haha), and get hands on experience at your Guelph university with the bees, and have some fun, and go back home with a certficate or something? it would be really good as an experience and to come back home and start the bee keeping? I would easily pay for such a Summer hiatos. Learn beekeeping, experience Canada eh, and return home with some good memories.

The qustion is why you don't you introduce a matted queen? to avoiding 27 days delay and not to go to the possibilty of other problems?

That is a fourth option and the most common for a beginner and small-scale beekeeper. The idea of self-sufficiency is to breed your own queens. They have successfully harvested the queen cells that they have grafted and put them directly into a hive that needs a queen and is perfect for use as a mating colony. This could have been done as a separate operation by creating a mating NUCs, but it would delay the split another two weeks into the season. It would also require the use of additional resources and the end result would be the same.
We make up these nucs earlier in the year than when we can produce mated queens
