- Hello everyone and welcome to the bindery! This video is a big step in the epic D&D tome series, both in terms of the work that went into the book, and in runtime! It was a lot of work to get the book into its covers and I tried to show every step of the process as best I could without letting the video go on for hours. I hope you enjoy it, and I very much appreciate your being here!
The main operations covered in the video are:
Trimming the Fore Edge: 3:30

Weaving the Endbands: 15:34
Lining the Spine: 24:48
Attaching the Covers: 32:07

It was rather cool to see the sped up hammering of the shoulders, because you could A:See the movement of the spine and signatures, and B: actually see the extent of the movement required to create the shoulders, which is a lot more dramatic than you’d think. There’s something deeply satisfying about watching page trimming using a plough too.

Just want to thank you on behalf of my ADHD/"jack of all trades" self That really want's to do everything (including book binding). Seeing you go through all the steps helped scratch that itch and helped me see just how much actually goes into all of this. Incredible work so far and I'm excited to see the result!

I've got a homebrew world in which gnomes are a wee bit insane and also very strangely creative with their insults, and I'm going to nick "crooked book" to use as one of those digs! It rolls off the tongue really well, haha!
It'd be a great name for a tavern too, come to think of it.
Really enjoyed this installation, the sped-up footage of the hammering of the spine REALLY shows just how that works and the kind of effort required to create that shoulder. The Mage Hand joke was great too. I am always so amazed with your work, the attention to detail is VERY impressive, and the way you show and explain what you're doing is quite satisfying in a completely and wonderfully book-nerd way! Thank you for taking us along on this adventure, can't wait for the next session!!
Watching you work is fascinating; makes me realize that crafting of this quality comes with a hefty price. It's a shame that we don't have many binders that appeal to this quality of work anymore!

I didn't know how much I would enjoy watching someone turn 3 books into one, but now here I am an hour and a half later wondering why I can't find the 4th video just to realize this is an active project and this video was posted yesterday.

What a delight to watch. As a 30 years long D&D roleplayer and amateur bookbinder which has found your channel a while ago, I'm absolutely amazed by this awesome project. I've always thought that D&D books would look beautifull if well put togheter, but never had the courage to do it myself on mine. What a inspirational work. Can't wait for the next part! I've been following your stuff for a while now, having only merely tinkered with bookbinding, and have just made my first book of some uni notes with a fabric cover ... but seeing the entire process is making me wish I had a garage to start building some great tools :)
My eventual aim is to rebind an old family Bible from the 19th century that is falling apart, and to add some new family record pages inside it, a family tree that my wife is planning to paint, and some surviving photos in a memory section. I'd love for this to be something that can be passed down the generations. I've just gotta hone my skills to do it justice. Inspired by this, I think I'll next try and make an A5 notebook with the same false bands and hollow back as you've done here, and have my first go at leather.

I can’t wait to see the finished product! It would also be cool to see how much the weight has changed from turning it into 1 book. It will probably weigh more with the leather cover. But this is going to be a book that’s passed down to the next generation for sure! Your grandchildren could be playing D&D out of this book.
It's a good thing that Wizards of the Coast seem to intend that their new version "OneDND" is backwards compatible with 5e.
@@kelly4187 yeah. From the stuff I’m hearing about oneD&D, I don’t think I’ll be playing it. Alot of people are saying it’s going to be virtual with micro transactions. I’ve been trying to buy as many used books as I can so I can use it when it goes out of print. I own 3 players handbooks so I can share them with other players. I doubt they will stop printing 5e content for a while but I want to make sure I have enough to last year’s.

You have clearly proved that you are PROFICIENT in these artisan's tools. I hope someone has "bookbinder's tools" in their homebrew.
That combination laying press and plough is awesome. I've trimmed a bunch of books using a chisel and a press, but I've never gotten an edge as smooth as that. Half the time it winds up ever-so-slightly chewed up and requires sanding.
I trimmed many books with a chisel so I know what you mean!
So impatiently awaiting. I have fallen in love with this series, and never expected such an in-depth look at book binding. It's remarkably precise and meticulous, just like my other hobbies.

In the Artisans' Top 10' there are many contenders; the latheworker, the sculptor/clay worker, even Mr Baumgartner the restorer, etc, and there's you going for the 'french double headband'. I think you must be in the No.1 spot. . . for now.

I had no idea the amount of detail work that goes into doing a binding like this. There can't be many with the skills to do handbound books like this. I now understand why the prices on them are always high.

I am enjoying watching this very much. When D&D came out my cousins( boys) were really into it and would not let me play saying it was too hard for girls!
The only channel on youtube I want to have the bell for. It is so relaxing to watch these and the book looks amazing so far. Making me jealous I would love to have a master tome!
His craftsmanship is high end quality. I would pay $1500 for this product.
I've attempted sewing a headband over a ribbon before. I couldn't find any info on how to do it, so I tried various ways, including tying down by sewing through the ribbon. Glad to finally see how someone else does it.
I have also sewn through ribbons and been dissatisfied with the results. This method I think is a happy medium.
This has quickly become one of my favorite maker series and earned a subscribe for sure. Quite the show of not just craftsmanship but also excellent editing, sound and cinematography.
I love this series, I'm inspired to try and give bookbinding a try myself now, although I'll do a few practice runs before trying to combine my TRPG books.
Good and bad news:

Please make your projects into one long video like you did with the Medieval book. I swear, I'd watch one long-form project video vs several 10-15 min videos on the same project.

At first I was bummed out by the angled tapes, but once you started adding the watercolor paper I came around on them. Gives the tome some wonderful charm.

This is EASILY one of my favourite things i've ever watched on youtube! Your filming and narration is perfect, thanks for putting this together for everyone! Back in my bookbinding days I put together 10 springback books and they took me forever. Very satisfying to make though, especially when attaching the split boards and you can really see it coming together! Excited to see the cover wrapping on the next one! I did a similar method to you with the 2 triples of raised bands, then i made a recessed panel in the centre gap and fit in a piece of dark brown buckram cloth with the gold foiling/lettering on it. Came out beautiful.

i'm not all the way trhough the video but i'm truly amazed by your work. i learned this craft myself for 3 years here in germany in a workshop and from a master craftswoman of over 30 years. it's such a beautiful work and art and i will continue watching and following along. keep up this good work!
Loving this series! I am an amatuer bookbinder for sure, made a homemade signature sewing stand, spine rounding vise which doubles as a plough that is use a super sharp hand chisel. I have done a few books with medieval binding, sewn my own headbands, covered in goat skin and splattered the page edges with potassium permanganate.
So far, well done, it's a master piece so far.

@valentinevintel9814 no it wouldn't, you can get hand bound books for a few hundred dollars. His etsy store sells his books for around 200.
@@baenre23 How is it possible? He says he can spend 60+ hours on a tome, if he pays himself only $10 an hour that's already $600, then you have the price of material, taxes, and paying for the tools. That would already be $1000 how can he sell those for $200?
@valentinevintel9814 well if he already sells handbound tome for 200 even if you were to double that and add extra for the books themselves and any extra materials thats still atound 500-750. And even if it were thousands of dollars who cares, maybe i have the disposable income for it
