I have been watching CynDoll here on TH-cam growing her hair and she blow dries EVER week....She shows her curls almost every if not every time before she blows dries it(on high)...I am no longer scared of heat...:)....Thank You for more tips....
I definitely use heat every wash day(biweekly or monthly). I use my Revair to keep my hair stretched. I use chi silk infusion and have never gotten heat damage.
My daughter is 16 in just over a week and she wants her hair flat ironed. This is the second time she’s going to have it done in her entire life and it looks as though I’m going to have to do it. I can’t thank you enough for this info - even for myself as I suffered heat damage last year and had to start my journey again. You’re an angel 😊
I absolutely do use heat. My favorite go to protector is Design Essentials HCO spray and Design Essential's Silk Essentials serum. It has never fail me yet.
I want to use heat on my natural hair because I’m so tired of wearing a curly natural hair style. I’m tired of the shrinkage and sometimes I get disgusted. I don’t want to relax my hair but I’d love to try a silk press. I thank you for sharing.
I’ve been natural off and on since 2009 and I’ve learned that my curl pattern changed 3-4 times after each big chop. I was able to grow my hair long and healthy, but I did not like how my hair changed and the heat made my curl pattern very loose. Now that I finally have my super tight curls back I wouldn’t dare risk flat ironing my hair for a temporary look. I’ll just grab a straight wig. Great video!!! I love your content and can’t wait to see more videos.
Thank you for this! You addressed my biggest concern heat use/damage. I do protein treatments but my hair is so thin and fragile, breaks easily. I always like your videos before watching because I know the content is going to be worthwhile.
OMG! I need this. I have recently decided to be a straight natural...again. I use heat WEEKLY. I have purchased every expensive thing to help minimize the damage (Revair, Dyson Corrale, K18 bond builder). They help out a ton (especially that K18 my hair is literally improving with each use despite all the heat) but always looking for more tips and tricks. So I'd say the K18 is my one thing that saves my hair. It's 10x better than Olaplex. Thanks!
@@CurlyChemistry I'm five years natural and have not used heat on my hair in that. Of time but I'm contemplating doing so to make trimming easier and check the length. I was hoping that you would do a video on revair reverse hair dryer. And tell us about that K18 whatever that is! :-)
@CurlyChemistry There's absolutely no way I could blow dry my hair weekly without the Revair. It's so gentle but I still get maximum stretch. It doesn't get above 220F.

As always, wonderful tips! Yes, I do use heat and like you suggest, I use heat protectants in phasing… before the first heat pass and again before the final heat pass. My hair has responded beautifully. Also, I don’t use heat any higher than 375 degrees. This has made a world of a difference. Thanks again!! Looking. Forward to your next video!
I've been growing my hair back for over a year since chemo and have used heat 2x. My hair texture has changed so I don't use heat nearly as much. Just ponytail it
I do the heat protectant layering too! I use a lotion type for blow drying then a serum type for flat ironning. I don't get sleek results but I want more of a volumous look anyways. I also still seal at the end with a light serum to help avoid early reversion. I'd like to think I'm also sealing in any moisture but I'm not sure about that. As always thanks for the science beyond it!
Waited all week for this video, then had to work late. Anyway, I didn't want to do anything to my hair until seeing what mistakes I've made in the past that caused my heat damage. You jumped right in on my problems. I thought throwing a little grease on my hair would take care of any damage I might get. Now, I think its best if I go to a professional for straightening my hair. Thanks so much, Tonya, for sharing so much knowledge with us. We love you.
You hit the SPOT this time! Was thinking about what I would do in the future with my hair. THIS is my answer. You mentioned not too long ago, using a ponytail as a protective hairstyle. Your saying that was GOD answering a prayer to me. I researched ponytails and settled on one with bangs and curls. When I'm done with the ponytail, I'll use heat and possibly cut my hair in a style...verdict still out on that. THANK you SO much for all the information. My hair is flourishing now. Just working on my TEMPLES, but you just did a video for that.
Thank's for the tips! Every now and then I will flatiron my hair to check the length. Since I cut my bra strap length thick natural hair to my neck, all H_LL broke lose! Hair loss and severe thinning was out of control, so I went back to natural styles but my twistouts looks like I've been electrocuted! My hair is so hard to grow now, but thanks to your video's and the community comments, I have hope again.

Just this morning I was wondering if I had heat damage bc my wash n go's never come out right (I might just need a better gel) or what heat damage looks like on 4c hair cuz all I've ever seen was like 3- 4a heat damage. I'm going to try doing these steps in my routine for about 2 months and see how the result are for my 4c low porosity hair.
Wow this is right on time. I have been thinking about blow drying my hair and possibly a light flat iron once a month but wasn't sure the safest way. This helps!
Ooo girl thank you for this here video! I don't use heat other than to dc with my hooded steamer or dryer. I definitely want to try a little heat, maybe twice a year. I'm totally afraid of heat because I heat damaged my hair right after I transitioned for a year and 3 months, ugh, talk about heartbroken. I cried...so again, thank you thank you thank you
Overly conditioning my hair has worked for me. Like you have to be consistent lol. Like every single week consistent 🤣 my girl always coming with the fire 🔥🔥🔥🔥
I use to consider myself a "straight natural" until about 3 years ago. I chopped off my damaged ends over time. My current styles allow me to put moisture (water) in my hair throughout the week. I havent put heat in my hair for over a year and I've never had so much growth. Ive realized that Im not 3c but 4a/4b. And now my hair has changed to low porosity. Which I'm loving. I'm not saying I'll never use heat again, but the cost-benefit ratio isn't hitting at the moment. If I want hang time, I'll stretch my hair (african threading, twisted buns, and braids), or wear a wig. Great video 💕
I use heat in my regiment. It’s about 20%. Most times, I wash my hair and put them into 4-6 twists to moisturize and dry. I use the Reverse air dryer to stretch it. If I want a straighter look in a couple of days I use my Ion Pro steamer (with a heat protectant on 375). I have fine 3b-3c curls, ,I think lol it gets confusing with all of these hair types. I do not like bone straight (anymore) I prefer to keep a loose bouncy curl. Once I use the pro steam iron, I put my hair in 4-5 Bantus knots to get the loose curl. Because I use it sparingly, I have not experienced any heat damage. I do need to do protein treatments. Love your channel, I watch but I don’t comment lol. Thank you for sharing. I learn a lot.
OMG, I truly needed this video. I now know how to modify my efforts to straighten my hair. Thank goodness I got the heat correct. I only use 380, so I'm good to continue with other modifications.
I used to use heat because I only wore my hair straight. I never really had damage unless I had blonde highlights while flat ironing. I got protein treatments at the salon every 4-6 months. My home wash routine was Shampoo, Conditioner, Leave in Conditioner, heat protectant, blow dry, flat iron at 425-450 degrees, finishing spray or serum. Now I wear my hair Curly all the time & I am highly tempted to add flat ironing back in, BUT I'm afraid of what it will do to my curl pattern. I don't want to lose my curly curls. The struggle is real
Yes I use medium heat on blow-dryer. I was not using heat protectant. But after listening to your videos, I plan to incorporate an oil to protect. I had issues with heat protectants in the past. I believe the oil will work better for me. I appreciate the content you put out. I have I incorporated tea rinses. Made a great difference for my hair. My hair is so much stronger. I stopped flat ironing. I don't need to with a relaxer. I just wrap my hair. I have gained so much knowledge on hair thru this chanel. Thank u so much!!!
1/11 I’v only used heat two times during my almost 10 years of having natural hair. Now, I want the option of having my hair flat ironed. Thank you for sharing this valuable information!
It's been years since I've used heat. I cool diffuse, but even though it triples my drying time, I'm not tempted to go back to heat bc my hair has been thriving & I like the feeling of the cool air. So I just put on some good veeedeeos during my lengthy cool diffusing sesh's! Thanks & have a wonderful weekend! xo ❄❄❄😘
I'm back to using heat (professional blowdrying every two weeks to a month). I tried to no heat and my hair didn't really thrive. It grew but was not healthy at the last 4 or so inches 😞. I'm going to see how it fares with this addition of heat. I won't use it in between and made my own little protein spray and using lauric acid oils.
In the past I used heat monthly, but haven't done it for a few years and now I'm scared to, but v tempted. I even bought that expensive "reverse air" dryer but have been too nervous to try it out. I just might now with your tips in mind - thanks!
If you’re referring to the Revair, it’s amazing! I’ve used it several times and it dries my without drying it out. Your hair will feel soft and moisturised after using it.
@@thegreencord2985 Thank you for sharing. Been on the fence about Revair for a while because of a previous salon caused severe heat damage. My hair is fine, low density, nervous to try as well.
Really glad I came across this video, my curl pattern literally changed after my silk press and I was so confused, I have some heat damage which is straight and limp but overall my curl pattern seems it went from a 4c to a 4b
That's a good idea, never thought of that over the years of me putting heat on my hair, not even a protecting cream.Boy,when you are young, you really don,t think that way, when you are older that's when the thinking cap goes on.Thxx for that info.Well appreciated.👍💖
I have heat applied when I get professional trims 2 to 3 time a year. I always make sure to apply a protein treatment before any heat style. If I don't get a chance to do so, I apply a protein treatment and deep conditioning as soon as I revert my hair.
Yah I usually put a moisturizer and heat protection spray before I blow dry my hair so I can open my hair cuticles then seal it with a seal in with a seal in. And I actually wash my hair like every 3 days tbh and then Blowdry it. It’s actually growing surprising. The dyson blow dryer is amazing 🤩
I try to use heat once every six months before i install a long-term protective hairstyle. I only blow dry and never flat iron. My hair is always strong because instead of a deep conditioner, I use a cholesterol treatment. On wash day, when I moisturize, I apply my leave-in, castor oil then heat protectant then I give my hair two days to dry and absorb most of the sealing oil. Right before I'm about to blow dry, I apply the heat protectant again. I use the tension method then my Denman brush to assist me in blow drying.
I've heard that we should never use a conditioner(especially the leave in) that contains glycerin when using heat on the hair. Is this true? Also, it doesn't matter WHAT I do, my hair becomes straw when I use heat I even tried sitting under a hooded dryer with rollers I still get straw My hair is high porosity and fine I didn't even want it super straight Just stretched for a different look I give up! 😩😢
I'm just reading this years later. Hopefully you solved your issue with the straw like hair already, but in case not, I'll share that I had this issue and for me it was resolved by getting heavy metals off my hair. I used a chelating shampoo and installed an extra filter on my shower and now I am consistently getting softer, more flexible hair. K18 has also helped me regain elastic strength in my hair after being brittle so long from the heavy metals from the local water getting into my hair when I lived out in the desert a few years ago. I still have cottony hair that doesn't get as silky as people with a different hair texture (which most hair 'influencers' have), but I can at least get it soft now. I use a revair every single wash day, even if doing a twist out. I don't flat iron much though.
I am many decades relaxed with BSL hair and other then a hood dryer every two weeks on a roller set I have not used heat in almost 4 years and my hair is flourishing. Olaplex is a recent addition but I deep condition with every wash and use hard protein when I do my bi-annual relaxers.
I am often tempted but back out due to curl conservation. Pattern, integrity, strength, and health of my hair winning out! This will help me to do it. I used a flat iron for a season. Then had to wait too long g for my coil pattern to get fit.
I do all of the things you spoke about. I straighten my hair in the late fall and winter, I normally do it every two to three weeks until spring. I never get heat damage, because I don't use a flatirons, instead I use an old fashion pressing comb, the ones that you place on the stovetop. I temperature check with a white cloth before running it through my hair. I want be doing as much this year, because my hair as gotten really long, my back want be able to take it, so I will only be pressing it for special occasions.
I use the botanika protein treatment in my hair before I had to go to the salon to get my hair braided and they had to blow dry it to make it straight... it was so hot that I thought I was gonna get heat damage from it but when I took out my hair in a month and washed it... turned out the blow dryer didn't affect my hair at all... I was so happy about that.
On my wash day I sit under the dryer for 20 minutes and that’s once a week. I just started using castor oil as my heat protection. The only other occasion if I get my hair twisted I will go under the dryer to set it.
Aphogee is tried and true! My Mom used it on my hair as a kid. I’m in my late 30s and still use it. Love your videos! I’ve learned so much. Thank you!!! 😃😃
I am so tempted to use heat while diffusing , but it's always turned to be a wash day fail.. so i damp style and air dry, and yes after your silicone video, I have included silicone based products and I am loving the results ..
I have been using pure henna on my natural hair for 30 years. I have extremely long thick curls. Im tempted to becoming a straight natural by using coconut oil then a heatbrush . What are your thoughts on coconut oil as a heat protectant?
Thanks T, I do appreciate that the information was very informative, I have been using light heat with blow drying my hair and I have found that I use a heat protection that helps but I am planning on incorating more heat in my journey thanks again for the education on how to use heat properly because it is a concern especially preparing it with protein treatments good point great job!
Hiya Sis! Yup...no heat for my tresses. When I'd initially cut out the heat (over 10 yrs ago) from my hair regimen, my hair responded so well that it grew to great lengths! It was well over halfway down my back at the longest. The only times heat was used was by my stylist to do hair treatments. I would also use it for wrap-set hairstyles; that happened 2-3 a year. The rest of the time I'd do my own heatless treatments (body heat only). Seemed to work well for me.
I didn’t think I would ever use heat again! Thank you. Also, how long can you store a clay mixture? I made a batch yesterday and left it on the countertop & fell asleep! It’s been 24 hours is it safe to use? (Bent, Rhass, Kaolin, ACV, Oil, Distilled water)
1. I take my daughter to the salon to do protective styles n the stylist always blow dry the hair. I normally wash her hair before I take her. What do I need to apply to her hair to protect it from the heat? 2. How do I prepare my hair for a silk press?
Someone did a test on the Fantasia IC Heat Protector with a Q-tip and a lighter and it went to flames. She was testing out different heat protectors. KeraCare didn’t flame.
Very good advice, thank you! I do use IC heat protectant; it works great and I tend to use too much because my hair is thick. I like the end results! God bless you!!!
HI CURLY CHEMISTRY I USE HEAT BUT IT 40 OR 50. I ONLY GET MY HAIR STRAIGHT ENOUGH TO COMB!!! I ENJOYED YOUR VIDEO AND THANK YOU AND PLEASE HAVE A BLESSED DAY!!!!
Thanks you! I never use heat to straighten my hair, however I go multiple times a week in the hammam or sauna… Should I use these techniques as well before going there? And which one is the less worse for hair: hammam (wet heat) or sauna (dry heat)? Thanks a lot for all your videos, they are so gold!!!
Think you for doing this video I never considered doing a protein treatment on my hair but I'm definitely going to do one this week before I do my blowout thank you always for the information that you provide
Can heat be good for some hair types? Been natural for a few years now to grow it long but I only have good results wash day and don't refresh bc I don't wanna add to much products.. I don't put heat unless it's trim time but was wondering if heat could be a good thing.. less brushing and manipulating.. plz do a video on adding heat to a natural wavey curly hair gal
Would you recommend the same methods and products for a tropical climate? Heat styles don't usually last because it is very humid. What are your thoughts on the texture management system?
Can you please do a video on how to protect high porosity hair during heat styling?! I know that type of hair presents extra barriers when it comes to heat styling
Straight-hair natural here! I use heat every two weeks and press my hair with a hot comb….yes, you read it correctly. I find that flatirons do more damage to my fine strands because I can’t control the heat. A hot comb cools over time and the hair at the bottom of a section doesn’t get as much heat as my roots. One thing that has helped me is the 2-min aphogee protein treatment every other wash day. I also like elasticity treatments such as ouidad and moknowshair curl restoring treatment. I use to think my hair didn’t like protein….but now I realize that it does ok with moisturizing protein treatments like ORS hair Mayo, and 2-min aphogee product.
I have been watching CynDoll here on TH-cam growing her hair and she blow dries EVER week....She shows her curls almost every if not every time before she blows dries it(on high)...I am no longer scared of heat...:)....Thank You for more tips....

Thank you for your feedback on the Revair! I'm been eyeing it for awhile.
You're so welcome!
@@thegreencord2985 Yes, I got the Revair! It cost so much and I haven't even tried it - but thanks for this nudge. I'm going to finally go for it.
@@thegreencord2985 Thank you for sharing. Been on the fence about Revair for a while because of a previous salon caused severe heat damage. My hair is fine, low density, nervous to try as well.
Every January and I do EVERYTHING you just said! Chi twice, Aphogee first!
I love your videos! They're very informative.
Thank you Latoya! :-)
I have definitely had heat damage but I am thankful for your tips
You are so welcome!
Also, it doesn't matter WHAT I do, my hair becomes straw when I use heat
I even tried sitting under a hooded dryer with rollers
I still get straw
My hair is high porosity and fine
I didn't even want it super straight
Just stretched for a different look
I give up!
Wow, this is so informative as always. You are amazing. Thank you once again!
I state again you are my hair saver thank you young lady🤗
I am often tempted but back out due to curl conservation. Pattern, integrity, strength, and health of my hair winning out! This will help me to do it. I used a flat iron for a season. Then had to wait too long g for my coil pattern to get fit.
Such a good video, thank you
I do all of the things you spoke about.
You're so welcome!!
I am so tempted to use heat while diffusing , but it's always turned to be a wash day fail.. so i damp style and air dry, and yes after your silicone video, I have included silicone based products and I am loving the results ..
What is a good light leave in conditioner to buy?
I have been using pure henna on my natural hair for 30 years. I have extremely long thick curls. Im tempted to becoming a straight natural by using coconut oil then a heatbrush . What are your thoughts on coconut oil as a heat protectant?
Great information 👍 very useful. Thanks.
yes I do use heat, currently using Mizani Thermasmooth. However, I've ordered Alodia Heat protecting style cream.Hopefully it works...
Thank you!!!❤️ Heat, makes my hair easier to manage.
Thanks for sharing Disa!
Thank you for sharing 😇
Do you suggest flat ironing your hair with grease?
Always great content!!! Please keep it up 💪🏿
How many passes of the flatiron do you recommend?
No more than 2, 3 if it's really needed, but use with discretion.
Is it ok to apply heat on your hair after you have put on an oil, like Olive Oil or Avacado oil etc.?
I do use heat on days when I use deep conditioner on my hair I used a hooded dryer on Med heat setting.
Great video! 👍
What is considered "excessive heat" use? Daily use, weekly? Great information as always.
Very good advice, thank you! I do use IC heat protectant; it works great and I tend to use too much because my hair is thick. I like the end results! God bless you!!!
Should you use a heat protector before moisturizing your hair or after? I have never used one before, so I'm clueless about them.
I usually use heat when sitting under the dryer for my conditioner , and before I get braids!
This is an awesome video. Thanks!
Thanks sis 👍😊
Happy Friday beautiful 🥰🥰🥰🌻
Notification gang 🔥🔥😂😂
Gang gang!! xoxo!!
I be so tempted to become a blow dried natural, but was afraid. How often should you blow dry and should you use cold heat?
I have low porosity hair that is protein sensitive. I use heat to dry my hair. I was wondering how would I know if I needed a protein treatment?
Can I use a curl bond treatment and a protein treatment in the same day before applying heat? If not, which one is more effective?
