    A great video showing us how you do your weathering start to finish.
    When I weather my locos and rolling stock I keep in mind that if the dirt is washed off with rain it falls down. So I always apply my washes with downward strokes.

    Thanks for the video and I thought the music was a great choice. I've jist ordered some weathering equipment, so I'll be doing my first locomotive very soon! It was good to see weathering with basic tools and hands, rather than the airbrushing in other vids :-)

    Congratulations Tom for this exceptional piece of work, it's professionally done to the highest standard, and I'm sure it will be an invaluable asset to anyone brave enough to tackle weathering, it really is superb, so thanks again for the inspiration...Bob

    I'm an American and I agree. Not too many quality weathering tutorials from American modelers on TH-cam. Most of them are kids who think they know how to weather and slap some enamel paint on it.

    @DoctorTankEngine Thanks Tom, my layout has a few new running lines, but little in the way of scenic work done of late. There doesn't seem much time at the moment as I'm always out filming the real thing. When the long Winter nights draw in and it gets cooler up in the attic, things will move on. Your own layout is truly inspirational Tom, and it's always fascinating to visit your world....Bob

    Thanx for sharing. The difference after applying the muck and the grime is very obvious.

    @DoctorTankEngine I'm certainly no weathering expert.. but I'm always willing to learn new things, even if I may not always use them immediately, or show how I do it, in a video.. :)

    many thanks Leo
    I have also tried a new method, T-Cut. I had heavily weathered a couple of A3s quite poorly with some spray weathering. The T-Cut removed the majority of the weathering, but leaving it around the nooks and cranies. T-Cut also gives the loco a realistic dull shine....my favoured method so far :)

    Very kind of you....I've now tweaked my efforts, using a mixture of airbrush and powders, plus white spirits.

    i'm not a big fan of weathering, it's no problem with frieght locos. but express engines it makes it look like it's lost it's smartness, and also makes it look like it's not top link anymore.

    I mostly like to weather wagons, gives me something to do , when I have time to work of the layout.

    What?? A new video??? (Faints)
    Great tutorial.. this can be applied (if you pardon the pun) to any kind of model, I would assume.. :)

  • @DoctorTankEngine
    @DoctorTankEngine  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just a response to everyones comments. You have all been most kind.
    This video is now coming up to 2 years old. I now feel I've learnt alot more, and I would say what you see in this video IS NOT the best way to weather and is very limited. I know use various techniques, including, airbrush, white spirits, and powders. Far more realistic effects which I will hopefully do a video on over the next few months. If you would like more information, I would suggest to Tim Shackleton book on weathering

    Well That Really Is Good Weathering On Your Train Mate.

  • @DoctorTankEngine
    @DoctorTankEngine  14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @sparkshot
    Cheers mate, that sounds a good idea regarding weathering the wheels. To be honest she's not the best weathered loco I've done as it's more generic weathering rather than a particular look, but she looks good on the layout. I often have trouble with the leaking limescale as the powders don't always work too well, so I'm thinking of painting it on in future.
    See what I meant about smoke out of the chimney :-p

    the devil is always in the detail
    weathering will always create debate as there are so many methods, nice detail in this video, those 9 mins seemed like seconds

    @BasicModelling haha sorry it's been so long mate
    yeah i would say so....but I'd say you far more an expert than me, the results seem ok, but always trying to improve on them :)

    It all depends really, nothing is right or wrong, remember what I said, look at pictures of real locos from the 60s (best in colour) and you can't go wrong :-)

  • @TallboyDave
    @TallboyDave 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Not sure if you've answered this before, but, do you use anything to seal the weathering effects in place? Or just leave as-is once it's applied?

    • @DoctorTankEngine
      @DoctorTankEngine  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi David.
      Firstly thanks for the comment and secondly, ignore all advice I gave in this video!
      I use a totally different method now, and weather professionally using a mixture of techniques.
      To answer your question, with my methods today using a mix of paint and powder, no I do not seal them.

    absolutley, would work just as good on wagons and coaches, and you would at least not have to worry about getting it in the motor

    I'm trying different techniques including adding water to get the streaked effect on the grime, have just uploaded pictures in my modelling thread 'Darlington Works' over at the Permanent Way Forum permanentway. proboards. com
    Come on over, I'm sure members would like to see your work :)
    Best Wishes
