    I would love to grow peas. I’m going to try in the spring. The grasshoppers and squash bugs are devouring my garden. So frustrating. Thankfully I over planted the zucchini and squash so I could get enough harvested before the bugs destroyed them. Those pesky critters have found my acorn squash now. I managed to get 35 quarts of beans before my bush beans died. The yard long beans are still doing great. It has been wonderful weather for the garden here, but the bugs are like a plague. I am praying for you Mr. Charles. I sure appreciate your videos.

    I'm brand new to gardening this year. I found you about a month ago and love your wisdom. I just canned my okra today using the recipe from your video. I'm in Southern Mississippi, on the gulf. I've had to pull almost everything (tomatoes, cucumbers, beans and peppers) because of pests and heat. I've only got 2 okra, melons and a few peppers left. Is there anything I can plant now for the fall or do I wait for it to cool off some? I got hit by some kind of caterpillar and another larva. None of the "natural" pesticides work on them and I'm to the point where I don't care if we can eat them, I just don't want the bugs to either. So I was wondering about chemical pesticides too. This is for everyone in the comments too :)

      @valerie362 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@OldAlabamaGardener Thanks for answering! Normally they don't get much frost but it's possible, this winter there were a lot of frost warnings.
      I think I should take August off and see what happens. I'm dying in the heat anyway haha! I just looked at my melon rows too and the caterpillars got to the cantelope now too and probably will head for my tiny watermelon that I hadn't pulled yet, so they're making new fruit.

    • @breesechick
      @breesechick ปีที่แล้ว

      Have you checked the ratio on your mixture on your BT spray? It works really good for soft bodies worms/caterpillars.
      Also, buy 40% shade cloth and cover your garden.
      I did that last year and it's a game changer!
      ALSO, to help you stay cooler in the house (I don't have an a/c in GA and yes, it's hot!), use blackout curtains over your windows.
      Those tips should be a big help.

    I just love ❤️ your channel. Can I plant peas for a fall harvest? Or is it only in the spring that peas can be grown? I live in zone 5. After shelling all the peas, do I have to do anything with them before placing them into the freezer, like blanching them first?

    • @OldAlabamaGardener
      @OldAlabamaGardener  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, you can plant a fall crop. Just get the timing down of when to start the seeds. We find that peas taste better if we blanche them before freezing.

      @CuriousinNY 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@OldAlabamaGardener Thanks for responding. Great to know. On a different note, I’m starting to harvest my green beans. Would I blanch them before freezing too?

    • @OldAlabamaGardener
      @OldAlabamaGardener  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CuriousinNY Yes. What blanching does is stop the enzymes from spoiling the beans. Enzymes are what will cause the beans to not taste good, even in the freezer. Blanching kills the enzymes. If you want to get a first hand example of what I am talking about, do some both ways (some blanched and some not blanched) and see which one you like best. Be sure to mark the freezer bag which is blanched and which is not. Then after a month or so, cook some of each, that way you can do a "side-by-side" taste test. Then next year you will know which way you want to do all your beans.

      No, I don't have a video on cramps. If it were me I would want to know my vitamin D blood level and then get it up to at least 50 ng/ml. Have you tried Apple Cider Vinegar?

    Hey Alabama gardener i love your videos Man, How do you go about growing food in a new plot of land of heavy dense clay soil thats eroding? I really want to grow a three sisters method in it but my roots dont have enough oxygen to grow in it. I would really appreciate any advice from others as well!

    • @OldAlabamaGardener
      @OldAlabamaGardener  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      To stop the eroding, you might consider framed beds. To improve the soil, add compost, plant matter, leaves and worm castings. To watch my videos on worms and worm castings, do a Google search on: OAG worms

    Thanks ! Do the older/larger peas have less sugar/more carbohydrates and are more starchy?

    • @OldAlabamaGardener
      @OldAlabamaGardener  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Ken. Yes, the younger ones are sweeter and the older ones more starchy. I grew these primarily for my wife, as she likes to mix them with rice and then cook both the rice and peas together. It is just one of her countries ethnic foods.

    Funny we've used hog/cattle panels for years for our peas, cukes and anything that climbs. We used it also for our chicken coops.

    Is there any reason to not trellises the peas like you do pinto beans? Also how can I keep my pea shoots safe from birds? Thank you sir

    • @OldAlabamaGardener
      @OldAlabamaGardener  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No reason other than where I have the peas is protected from animal pests that will eat the young peas growth. From birds, some times they can be repelled by having a large plastic snake laying on the ground or on the trellis. The only other way is with something called Bird Netting.
