  • How Much Motorbike Racers Used To Get Paid. This week I interview Steve Parrish to see what it was like to be team mates to Barry Sheene. He also talked me through racing motorbikes in the 70's and 80's and how much motorbike racers used to get paid.

Anymore ex racers you'd like to see? I really enjoyed this one! The winner of the signed gloves was @shadowred1980! Loads more prizes coming soon just make sure you're subscribed so you don't miss out. If @shadowred1980 can send me a message on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram with your address I'll post the gloves straight out.

I could listen to Steve Parrish all day. That’s why we love motorcycle racing. Great interview Taylor!
Barry Sheene’s girlfriend, later his wife, used to live over the road from me in Chester back in the 70’s. Barry used to turn up in his Rolls and he’d always stop and chat to us ‘kids’. 40+ years later they lived up the road from me at Carrara on the Gold Coast in Australia.

Loved this interview, takes me back to when me and my dad used to go to the British grand prix year after year but I had to get in the boot to get in so my dad avoided paying for me, then whilst at hawkstone Park once for a British motocross grand prix Barry Sheene was there to award the trophies-I crawled under everyone's legs to get to the front of the crowd and he leaned down pulled me up and went "alright mate" just before giving Graham Noyce the trophy-amazing memories

Great interview, Steve Parish is such a character. I remember meeting him at the Triumph factory launch of their Moto 2 venture. I was looking around trying to find my Mrs and eventually found her chatting to Steve. He had managed to flog her a copy of his book and was signing it for her.
He's the past master at money making sidelines and probably the biggest practical joker out there.

What a great interview with Stavros. He's always seemed a very modest bloke. I was at Silverstone and on the inside of Copse Corner. We were Suzuki fans and cheering Barry on, then his bike packed up and so we all thought Stavros was going to win and then it all happened right in front of us and down he went. Steve was a bloody good rider and later twice European Truck Racing Champion. This was a very good interview Taylor. Keep it up. Do more of these with the same generation, as Stavros and I'm sure there'll be lots of stories from the old racers, as most have so many stories to tell.

Was at Copse in 77 when Steve dropped it. I think the crowd sighed with sadness.
Was there in 79 at Copse with my now departed wife, my girlfriend at the time, seeing Barry stick his fingers up at Kenny. I was there with a bunch of mates and we all laughed when we saw it. Ran on the track at the end kissed the tarmac.
That was the days you could go round the track, free, in the morning on a coach. Tyres screaming round the corners.

11:47 - Mallory Park, a little story that you Taylor and Steve might be interested in :-
*I well remember the Race of the Year at Mallory Park September 1964, and long after the race had finished and the crowds had gone, asking a Marshall if I could drive my car (Citroen DS19) around the circuit, he said better ask Mike (Hailwood) and directed me to him. I asked Mike, who I had briefly met a number of times before, and he said of course you can, and told the Marshall to let me through the top gate (Near Hairpin) - He said come back after we are having a bit of a Party with Chris Barber later. Did two/three laps and then went back. Mike appeared genuinely pleased to see me again and asked how I got on. Had a good laugh together as we found had a lot of common interests (3 years older than me and born on the same date 2nd April) and had been to the Belgian Grand Prix the previous year in my Morris Minor 1000. Stayed until late with many of the riders and "Chris Barber & his Jazzmen" playing. Imagine that today, the pits were open and you didn't need a fancy pass to get in. I was very keen on Jazz Bands, and in fact had an Acker Bilk Beard at the time, and was often mistaken for him ! (Maybe Mike thought I was "Acker") Still got the Program Price 2/6p and signed by many riders then including Phil Read, Jim Redman, Mike Duff, Bill Ivy etc. Incidentally Mike Won the race on the MV Agusta and was £1000 richer. Huge amount in those days. So no wonder he was happy. He held the 350cc Lap Record from 62-64 at 84.93 mph and the 500cc Lap record at 53 seconds 91.70 mph in 1962*
*What a great person Mike was, and a terrible loss to Motor Sport. I was not aware at the time I was talking to a Millionaire's son, as Mike was so modest and unpretentious, an everyday kind of Guy.*

Fantastic! You keep featuring my childhood hero’s. Never got more than the occasional photograph in a magazine or the very rare tv race coverage of these guys back in the day. You have a great channel with amazing access to a generation of racing superstars who many of us old fans love to hear tell racing stories. Thanks for sharing.

Brilliant interview, Taylor, well done. I did some club racing in Scotland in the mid-1970s and you just needed a full road licence, be a member of a club (Bon-Accord, for me), pay your SACU dues and apply for a race licence. You sent a Postal Order to the organising club with your entry fee for each event. They then sent a brown envelope (no money in it though) with your allocated race number, a list of the races you could enter on the day, a set of “regs”, and a handful of car-window stickers with details of the race and venue. All great fun though - happy days. Hope to see you at Knockhill in April?

Bike racing in the 80's was great, no traction control , no rider aids, purely talented riders, steve parrish was great in his day, met him a few times at knockhill, along with a host of other talented riders national/international , my favourite signed poster has to be steve webster MBE , he machined his own parts for the sidecar, always had time for his fans, what a great guy, I bet he could tell us some stories.

Great vid, I remember from a kid he used to visit the village I'm from to go and see Andrea and Barry, one time I was 17 and me and a couple of mates on Dtlc 125s were screaming down a back lane to the village and Steve's motor home pen15 was in front of us, no road to overtake so we took to the verge at fullbelt to get past, my mate ant was first and as he was flying past the motor he hit a verge cutout for drainage and nearly did a flying w as he flew past, we were crying with laughter and often wonder if Steve remembers

How much fun that must have been How sad that these days its all changed "for the worst" No characters no idiots just young men/women who don't seem to have had a childhood
and all that matters is money and winning at all costs How I wish the clock could sometimes be turned back for the youth to see what fun was all about !! sorry Taylor you are
possibly touching on what it should be like and I do see you having fun but at a cost great vid keep them coming young man you will get there thats without doubt I just love how
