The music made these movies, I must say. The part when the crowns appear and descend onto their heads is so magical. It sums up why these movies are so brilliant
I just watched all 6 episodes and my heart was filled with emotions I could not express in any other way than with tears. I remember watching this as a little girl, sitting as if glued to the wooden floor in front of the TV. I remember the splinters, the old book case, the dusty smell in the dark attic room and it was all lovely. Few books have given me as much joy as this series of books has and this televised part will always have a very special place in my childhood. Thank you for the upload.
As much as I adore the Disney films, I absolutely cannot deny the magic and warmth put into this version. I only saw this version once when I was little, but so much stuck with me. There are some things that both versions do to enhance the story of Narnia, but they are both wonderful to me!
Saw this with my children many years ago. I am rather old now and am more delighted than before as I understand so much more the symbolism. Yes, Mr. Lewis, a job well done. Super job, also, with the continuity and caring! Thank you so much.
The closing shot of the Professor smiling as the children walk out of his study is one of the many great, magical moments in this production, and the perfect way to end it. It's like you know immediately that he has in fact been to Narnia.
If you read the books in order, you already know the professor has been to Narnia. The Magicians Nephew explains a lot and should never have been skipped in the tv series or the movies
@@mim0381 I agree, the BBC would've done a great job with the Magician's Nephew. And we would've gotten to see Barbara Kellerman smack a man on the head with a bar 😂
Never saw this version before. But I watched it right after watching the animated feature. It has its own wonderful charm; I really liked Aslan. For the special effects of its time, he was exceedingly lifelike. Thanks for posting!
I love the small biblical references they make in they Narnia series. It's also a reason, I think, why Disney gave The Voyage of the Dawn Treader to 20th Century. *SPOILER ALERT!!! LOOK AWAY FROM THE SCREEN!!! SCROLL AWAY!!! SCROLL AWAY!!!* At the end of the Dawn Treader novel, the Pevensies ask if they'll ever see him again in our world, and Aslan replies "You will in time, but there I am known by another name." Maybe that's why Mr. Beaver says he has other countries to attend to?
Thank you HeathenMaiden! I've been looking for this series for the longest! Knew it was PBS but not that it was BBC so I couldn't find it. Thanks for the memories!!!
I just to thank you for uploading this series. I had never seen it before or even aware of it's existence. I am from Brazil. I was looking for the 2005 movie and came across your videos. I am absolutely delighted and amused. Thanks once again. I really enjoyed it. I am love with the books and this was such a treat for me.
It played like a theater production, a very, very well-made theater production. The Witch's over the top style just sold it. The costumes & puppetry were pretty ok, if U weren't too nitpicky & suspend disbelief. It's a fine choice for any nostalgic reviewer.
I remember watching this series in grade 2 in 2002. I thought this series was the coolest thing ever (now that I look back on it, I still think this is a great series! Albeit the graphics aren't great but it takes me back ^_^
I just watched this whole thing. Thanks for uploading. I remember watching this as a kid too. Was reading comment throughout, and sure this isn't as flashy as "now" but I haven't seen anything with this much heart and soul put out for a long time. Guess we grew up in the right era.
Thankyou HeathenMaiden, I have just watched all 6 Episodes and was instantly taken back to my childhood and given a warm fuzzy feeling inside that I rarely experience these days :D x
Thankyou so much for uploading this wonderful series! It's nearly impossible to find this on DVD here in Australia. I just sat and watched all 6 episodes in a row, and I'm tempted to watch the other series too!
the reason the others return to Narnia in the last battle is because they're all dead. They died in a train crash. Susan has turned her back on Narnia at that point, but she's still alive. CS Lewis told someone, a fan, in a letter than Susan still had a chance to return and that, who knew, she might have done so since it wasn't recorded in the Chronicles themselves.
That whole part with them running on the beach after the coronation was an addition that I didnt have in my VHS versions, its so cool to see these! Thanks so much for uploading HeathenMaiden!
I love everything to do with Narnia. The 2005 film is what got me to start reading the books. Yes, they're a bit different to the books, but all movie adaptations of books usually change a bit. I watched the BBC LWW and I love them just as much as the modern films.
I'd never seen that bit where they're playing in the water after the coronation! Mom recorded LWW when it was on tv (years ago), but they must have edited that part out! so glad I finally get to see it now.
Well, OK the new movie has a better cast, better effects and is in general a much better movie. But just watching this takes me back, and I get a warm feeling inside. Esp. when I hear the theme music, it's so beautiful :)
Incase anyone didn’t know, the actress who played the older Lucy pevensie is Juliet Waley Who also played Carrie willow in carrie’s war the bbc television serial adapted from the Nina Bawden novel from 1974 And she also appeared in angels aswell.
I really like Digory here. I can't explain it but he seems absent minded well actually paying a lot of attention. He seems kind too. Shame bbc didn't get tp his story. I loved these movies growing up thank you so much for making them available
I like the old and new versions for diff reasons. Old: special effects and 80s "cheese" factor make me laugh, but I like its charm and faithfulness. Also like this Susan way more. New: I like the other three children better, especially the dynamic between Peter and Lucy (he's really big brotherish). I don't like the old Lucy, not because of how she looks, but because she seems the same age as the other three (Georgie's adorable, clearly shorter and younger than the other three, more Lucyish).
I also love these versions better than the Disney ones, though I tried to watch the Disney one with an open mind. For instance I like Tumnus better in the new one, just slightly, and I think Lucy gets a tad bit too whiny in the BBC version (at least just in this movie). But Aslan and the White Witch are a million times better in the BBC version (sorry Liam and Tilda), and it feels like the BBC one captured the true heart of what Narnia is a million times better, which makes all the difference.
Good Heavens, no. The Professor is Digory Kirke. He was there when Aslan created Narnia. You need to read the Magician's Nephew for his whole story, but Digory is the one who made the wardrobe from a tree that Aslan gave him the seeds for. You should really read the books for the whole story though. ;-}
Hello childhood again!! This is the reason I used to get in every wardrobe in the house...I was so dissapointed when there was no snow there..and mum was angry bcs I caused a mess in there :))
This, ladies and gents, is what Aslan is supposed to be like. No offence to Liam Neeson, but he did not have the necessary voice to pull off what is essentially Jesus in lion form. He can definitely pull off the kindly, fatherly voice, but not the "ruler of the universe" voice.
Yeah the magicians nephew is a very good book aside from the lion the witch and the wardrobe the magicians nephew and the horse and his boy and the voyage of the dawn treader where me and my sisters favorite ones
One Thing I look forward to that I haven't seen either in the BBC miniseries or the Feature films are Books 1,3 & 7. They're good stories just like 2,4,5,& 6 are
So they can't remember the lamppost even though they must've been 12-17 when they arrived to Narnia, but they can remember Mrs Macready's name? Well, I'll chalk it up to all the memories coming back once they cross the threshold and are back in our world.
Okay for everyone saying this SERIES is more detailed than the movie, of course this show is more detailed, after all it is a SERIES in which more time is given for detail. Disney couldn't possibly fit all of CS's brilliant work in one movie. Think before you say.
Yes ... but also, there is humanity in all phases of human existence. It is part of our knowing what we are and can be. All avenues are explored ... and, as Narnia reminds us ... all revolves around the Love that is simply Existence. We are of Universe or Creation. We all are Edmund, the Witch, Aslan, Lucy and the rest ... all at once, inside. We choose, we imagine ourselves ... and we come to experience all within ourselves. Narnia is a reflection of The Spirit ... Beingness in all. Goodness.
I used to be kind of disappointed that Cair Paravel was kind of a ruin, but now I realize that it's probably been abandoned and in disrepair since the White Witch took hold of Narnia.
Um, OK, I'm sorry if I upset you, I honestly didn't mean any harm. I don't really see how bringing Jesus into the picture ruins it all. As I was, in some way, just quoting the author C.S.Lewis himself, I honestly don't see what I've done that is wrong. But again, I'm sorry if what I said ruined things for you. After all, it's our own opinion that matters really, as I said I was just quoting Lewis and what he intended it to come across.
@Ryhela I don't think that Disney's were for money. I think that Andrew Adamson had a vision and wanted to see it through. Maybe the production side wanted money, but I have read everything that Adamson had to say about the movies and I genuinely believe that HE wanted to do them because he loved the story and had some great ideas. Nothing wrong with that.
I brought the Chronicles of narnia BBC version The lion and witch and Wardrove Prince Caspian and the voyage of Dawn Trader and the silver Chair from dollar General for 12.50 It on dvd. It kinda hard to find that i tried to find another one. I might talk to movie place to see if they can get what i brought in.
Despite the slight ridiculousness of the actors dressed as animals, this series was really good. As a kid, I recall being terrified by the wolf who was captain of the White Queen's secret police and I thought the kids playing the Pevensies all played off each other really well. While the Disney version is superior in terms of effects and locations, this version is charming and special in it's own way. I will say that I'm glad either series never got around to making "The Last Battle" because I hate that book. I've read a lot of books in my time, but its one of the few that after reading, I tossed it away in disappointment and disgust because its so depressing compared to all the others in the series. STOP READING IF YOU DON'T WANT TO BE SPOILED......The entire book is tinged with a sense of dread that doesn't lift even when Eustace & Jill arrive and it just gets progressively darker. And even when you get to the part where they all emerge on the other side of the stable door and are happy to see each other, there's the still the terrible destruction of Narnia that we have to get through. Then there's the fact that Susan's not there and not a single member of the party has anything nice to say about her. I mean it's like hello, Aslan told her she wouldn't be coming back so she moved on and is living her life. She shouldn't be judged for that, but I digress. Lastly, there's the reveal that they are, in fact, dead. Instead of getting to live full lives on Earth, Aslan decides "hmm, since I'm going to take out Narnia, I'm going to go ahead and permanently yank the friends of Narnia out of Earth via an incredibly deadly train crash that also coincidentally, takes out the Pevensie parents." And not a single one of the Narnia friends even pauses to think of the repercussions this will have on the people left behind such as the familes of Jill and Eustace. No one spares a thought for Susan who will have to go identify the bodies of her family and plan a huge funeral. Yeah, if movies had been made of that book, I would not have watched because I would not have wanted to see the Pevensies and their friends die. Sorry for the rant.
Cardinal Directions and Earthly Compositions of the 4 rulers Queen Lucy the Valiant of the Glistening Eastern Sea King Edmund the Just of the Great Western Wood Queen Susan the Gentle of the Radiant Southern Sun and Finally King Peter the Magnificent of the Clear Northern Sky Once a king or queen of Narnia, forever a king or queen of Narnia. May their wisdom grace them until the stars rain down from the heavens.
@Kaladelia Also, I swear the scene had a certain parallel to the one right before when Susan and Caspian kiss, although I admit Lucy's and Susan's 'at the moment' faces seemed to be quite different, of close friendship and near lust, respectively.
I know not many people are fans of this Lucy (for obvious stupid reasons). I must admit I didn't like her in Dawn Threader - not her appearance, but her attitude/reaction just annoyed me so much there. But I don't see the problem here. They don't really look like siblings in mannerism or anything else, but individually, they're okay.
@Sinnybee i knew what scene you were talking about. and when i say a 'reference' has to exist i mean it has to be intentional. For example, in the 4th HP movie, Cedric and Harry give off a lot of gay vibes... while that might be something audience members see in the movie it is not a reference nor is it a hint. however, tumnus/lucy vibes from that last scene can be seen by audience but again i highly doubt it was intentional.
Yes, just as US society was more conservative at the time of writing ... so was England. What I mean is that with each generation, we become more removed from the values and ideals that were the invisible threads that held society together at that time. The subtleties are lost when we edit material for presentation in various media formats, yet they are integral to the story, painting a broader human experience. Literature is necessarily compressed to fit the medium that attempts to present it.
@kingdom True, which isn't much worse than the references in the new version to Lucy & Mr. Tumnus at the end of the movie... at least he's not close to the age he is in the BBC version... I don't think he'd make any moves on her while she is young o.O
The music made these movies, I must say. The part when the crowns appear and descend onto their heads is so magical. It sums up why these movies are so brilliant

Peter just touch his face and never said anything

They should have adapted the Magician's Nephew (the silver apple can be made using regular apples painted with food grade silver glitter)
Dammit, 17 years later and the theme STILL makes me weep.
Never saw this version before. But I watched it right after watching the animated feature. It has its own wonderful charm; I really liked Aslan. For the special effects of its time, he was exceedingly lifelike. Thanks for posting!

Thankyou for uploading the old bbc Chronicles of Narnia films they are good. Also they bring back good memorys.
thank you very much. these versions are enchanting.

this series is so much better than the new film, the language everything!
Would loved to have seen the bbc do the Magicians Nephew :-)
Thank you. Reminds me of when I first saw the VHS version in 2002.
Narnia FOREVER!

i love this version as they made a great movie with what little SX they had.

thx for uploading these. I haven't seen these since I was a kid. Watching this show again reminds me of the sundays when I was a kid.

I love Peter reaching for his beard and realizing it's gone.
I remember a time when my mom rented this exact mini-series.
I like the old and new versions for diff reasons. Old: special effects and 80s "cheese" factor make me laugh, but I like its charm and faithfulness. Also like this Susan way more. Yay! Nu har jag sett alla avsnitt! Tack HeathenMaiden, kul att du laddade upp den här klassiska serien, nu gäller det bara att få tag i den själv! ^^
It was the little boy Diggory in that one :)
@HeathenMaiden These are classic. Disney's is for money. These were for children. Makes a big differece. Thank you for posting these.
the costumes here are beautiful
Hello childhood again!! This is the reason I used to get in every wardrobe in the house...I was so dissapointed when there was no snow there..and mum was angry bcs I caused a mess in there :))
I enjoyed this movie, Thank you~!
"The magician's nephew" and "the horse and his boy"
The last battle (revelation)
Even if I have been writing bad thins about this so am I greatful. Thanks for posting
This, ladies and gents, is what Aslan is supposed to be like. No offence to Liam Neeson, but he did not have the necessary voice to pull off what is essentially Jesus in lion form. He can definitely pull off the kindly, fatherly voice, but not the "ruler of the universe" voice.
The professor was in Narnia himself at the time of its creation in The Magician's Nephew.
Yeah the magicians nephew is a very good book aside from the lion the witch and the wardrobe the magicians nephew and the horse and his boy and the voyage of the dawn treader where me and my sisters favorite ones

peter and susan look so cute as king and queen on their thrones
thanks soo much 4 uploading, been looking for this everywhere, dont u just love the professor lol, sooooo much better than the 2005 one
So they can't remember the lamppost even though they must've been 12-17 when they arrived to Narnia, but they can remember Mrs Macready's name? Well, I'll chalk it up to all the memories coming back once they cross the threshold and are back in our world.
They were younger than that. Time moves very differently in Narnia. Many years had passed, by the time they reached the old lamp post.
This coronation scene is beautiful! :)
Hey i remember watching this as a kid. And i have the box set but i love watching it along with Disney ones
So beautifully done love the music where did they film the secne when the children were adult riding the horses
wish there was the BBC the last battle and the other two narnia show
Okay for everyone saying this SERIES is more detailed than the movie, of course this show is more detailed, after all it is a SERIES in which more time is given for detail. Disney couldn't possibly fit all of CS's brilliant work in one movie. Think before you say.

haha i always notice how the professor bends so low over his work
I always thought this was a wedding when I was a little kid and I was horrified
Love the coronation scene... So Edmund gets to be a king after all, but not in the way he thought.
@annety27 you ARE ri8 , this is a threatrical performance, and the cair paravel castle is very small!
@ccsays well in fact if you stay over a hundred years in Narnia, and you return to our world, the time is still the same when you left.
I love the professor soo much and i just realized who he reminds me of... Stephen fry, i love him to loool
I used to be kind of disappointed that Cair Paravel was kind of a ruin, but now I realize that it's probably been abandoned and in disrepair since the White Witch took hold of Narnia.
good to watch this again. has aged rather well to be fair to it. Disney version or no Disney version.
The Professor looks a little bit like Lewis. But if he's anything like him, I wouldn't want to be in his class.

Really?! That's nice actually - answering his fan's question with a message of hope.

the beach scene is cute.
Totally don’t remember the beach scene!
Absolutely true. Blame the middle class consumerist culture. Families cut off from communities, on computers etc
@Kaladelia Also, I swear the scene had a certain parallel to the one right before when Susan and Caspian kiss, although I admit Lucy's and Susan's 'at the moment' faces seemed to be quite different, of close friendship and near lust, respectively.
@Sinnybee there aren't any 'references' there might be scenes that can be construed that way but it is not a 'reference' when it doesn't exist!!!!
I know not many people are fans of this Lucy (for obvious stupid reasons). well that was a lively cheer after they were crowned
Maybe you should try Computer graphics first before you bash it, its not as easy as it looks...
ps. I enjoyed the movie ^____^
Did BBC do a Magician's Nephew movie after this?
;) once a king or queen of narnia always a king or queen of narnia think the cordination is the only time we see Edmund as a gentlemen
@Sinnybee i knew what scene you were talking about. and when i say a 'reference' has to exist i mean it has to be intentional. @AlyMea no, but I don't remember it from the first time I watched it either.
Literature is necessarily compressed to fit the medium that attempts to present it.
ok i can understand likin this cuz its from a different era but truly the newer one is better.
@kingdom True, which isn't much worse than the references in the new version to Lucy & Mr. Tumnus at the end of the movie... at least he's not close to the age he is in the BBC version... I don't think he'd make any moves on her while she is young o.O
It's a shame these guys never made The Horse and His Boy. :(
That's assuming they hadn't read the series. They had, last I recall.
They're hardly separate. Much of US society comes from Europe. Traditions, ideas, perceptions.
@luvytaylor yes, yes they did want to match. That was pretty common...
