I actually sent David a message about pinpointing the date on his Stanley transitional plane on Instagram and he was incredibly gracious and kind in response. But I thought for posterity I'll post it here as well.
Based on what David is able to show, we can use Roger K. Smith's Transitional Plane Type Study to deduce its approximate age. Having a lateral adjuster, no "Bailey" label in the metal casting, and flat style "Stanley Rule & Level CO" trademark on the front means his plane was made from 1886 to 1904. To narrow it down further requires looking at the shape of the lateral adjuster bar and the presence of patent dates stamped on the depth adjuster wheel. Those should confirm whether it's a Type 9, 10, or 11.
I did my own dive into this when I restored a Stanley transitional plane I grabbed for a song at a flea market. Thought it would be interesting to pass along. Thanks again Dom!

Great Video Dom, you definitly should catch the rest of the experts. I don't know why but the Only Fools and Horses sketch came to mind, the one where Trigger gets a medal for using the same broom for 20 years, it only had 17 new heads and 14 new handles. As a bit of a tool nerd I bought your book for my son in law for Christmas... a budding tool nerd, he will love it.

Some of these tools are in my own studio, so I know the feeling of a favorite tool in my hand! Please thank Kirsten for turning me on to Tiranti! I have found the website and plan to get into a bit of trouble there in the near future! First, getting to know all the people we love to spend time with even better through hearing about their favorite tool was nothing short of genius. Just brilliant. LOVED THIS! Next up, we have to have a part two. I dearly hope you are able to get to all the specialists at The Repair Shop. While I love seeing the work you are doing on your Porsche, you don't ever need to apologize for a video like this. Also love hearing about how many of these tools belonged to a relative. As a guitar builder, I love it every time a job has me reaching for one of my grandmother's chisels. I know that feeling and nothing could ever take it's place. Love how you always bring out the human element. Brilliant!
I have that book, my Wife bought it for me last Christmas, I recommend it highly to anybody interested in such things. My favourite tool is a 1950's Henry Milnes lathe, it's a truly wonderful piece of machinery. I still have to figure out how to do screw cutting on it but have made many parts for many things, it's a joy to use.
As an architectural technician from 1970, my hand drawing tools have the same feel as Brenton's hammer has. Modern CAD has made them redundant but will never be replaced.
I love old tools.
Forty years ago an old boy told me that tools to him were like jewel's are to women but cheaper and more useful.

I have now finished your book Dom, a must for everyone who has an interest in all things practical. All my tools are my favorites, thats why I never ever loan any out. When I did loan tools out as a young boy if they came back, they were usually damaged. If they did return they never felt the same again. Difficult to explain I know.
So it's a case..... toucha my tools and I breaka your fingers! IF YOU NEED A TOOL, DO WHAT I DO, GO AND BUY ONE.

My favourite tools are those that were my dad's, bit like David. I have his plane, many files, screwdrivers, planishing hammers, a little bench vice, even his canvas toolbag. Many were from his time in the Fleet Air Arm, WW2, when he worked on secret microwave radar. His wartime tools had a handpainted red and yellow stripe around the handle. I still use his toolbag all the time, its about the size of a loaf of bread, and very robust. His name hand inked on the side...
Excellent Dom, great to hear what the experts find most essential, like you I would find this an almost impossible question to answer, as it would depend on the craft involved, and I love them all, perhaps a little too much !
I liked Brenton's answer to the how many hammers question, it's a standing joke in our family - "Just how many Hammers/Planes/Saws/Files/Pliers/Rakes/Hoes etc etc... (take your pick) do you have Dad ?" 😉😁
Great video Dom, this is just what tool nuts want to know. I especially enjoyed Brenton's contribution: "How many hammers have I got? Or, how many hammers have I told my wife I've got?" Everyone knows the crucial difference between those two numbers😄😆🤣Please catch Susie and Steve next time
My favourite tool was my Philips SBC multimeter but I killed it, one drop too many onto the floor done for the LCD display so I now have a Fluke which is my new favourite tool even though its second hand and about 20 years old it just works so well like my old Philips. Watch your vids all the time Dom, can't wait till I get down the Repairshop again to do another repair

Arha....A Unimat SL lathe, I have one myself. Brilliant little machine made by Emco Company, that model dates from the sixties I think, mine was second hand 40 years ago. Very versatile and really useful for those small fiddly turning jobs, wouldn't be without it!
My favourite episode so far :) Can;t wait for the other experts. I make furniture, machined metal parts, and jewellery and my favourite tool is a Ligier hand cut rasp - the feel and the curves you can make

Glad I’m not the only one! I knit and crochet and despite having lots of needles and hooks I always gravitate to the same ones. As Chris says, it becomes an extension of your hand 😊

My favourite thing is my great grandfather's tool box, now on its 4th generation, it has tools kept in it that went round the world with my Grandfather when he was in the merchant navy, some of my dads and now mine. Hopefully I'll get to pass it down someday. When you hold old tools in your hands I feel like it's like the previous owners are working with you.
Exactly that! What a comfort it is. It's almost like the knowledge of how to use the tool is in the tool because of how it feels to your hand.

Love listening to this, love the workshop but also loved listening to your book on audible about tools. I fell in love with old tongues since I got into Green Woodworking but to be blind I think I’m the first blind Bodger around I know of and toes make me feel good as I restore them Just gone onto your TH-cam clip because I follow a job in Carter Steam Fair and you was there yesterday at the open day which I was gutted because I didn’t get there I’ll admit to my heroes that would’ve been that day
That was wonderful. I'm with Chris Shaw - one of my favourite tools is a bone folder. Sadly mine does not have the same history as his but it's still a great wee tool.
I just opened the first page on your new book "Tools" thanks to Amazon. It has not made my bookshelf yet as I pick it up every day. I understand your position with choosing favourite tools . I always go for the old cast ones , smooth from use , in a world of mm and inch I have Whitworth , A F , wry necked , etc . Always the perfect fit and repairable . 👍🇬🇧
Well, my Sunday’s complete now. You can’t imagine how much I wanted you to open up that little red chest. Your video got me to wondering about my favorite tool, as well, and I finally decided it was probably my Dad’s old vise, as I use it almost daily for both mechanical and woodworkery.
It's almost like you are at work with you Dad when you are using it. What would Dad do next?
According to the Handplane Central website, the Stanley No35 plane was manufactured between 1869 and 1942. So it likely wasn’t new when David’s dad had it 😊.

I have a pair of Wire Strippers that I've had since college. My absolute favourite tool that I love.
That was awesome! My favourite tool is my claw hammer, my grandparents bought it for my Dad when he started as an apprentice electrician in the 1960s.
What an excellent interesting video. I agree my favourite tool changes from job to job. I do still have my original socket set that was purchased for me when I was a boy and I use that pretty much every day. 😎👍🛠
Unless you put the hacksaw blade in backwards.
When I was an apprentice , I had the pleasure of watching a manager from head office using a hacksaw with the blade in the wrong way. Poor thing couldn't understand why the piece of brass he was cutting was so resistant to his efforts with the saw.
That's a real shake my head moment right there.
I can relate to David's Unimat Lathe, I've got the identical machine with many attachments, and must admit it's one of my favorite machine/tools also.
I got a Unimat lathe 52 years ago. It has been resting many years, but is now in action again. FANTASTIC little machine.

A really interesting video, and nice to see there are others out there that have the same passion for tools that I have, it does make me think about which is my "go to" favourite tool, and of course Dominic you have identified that as the tool that get you out of trouble at the time, but I suppose there are favourite tools for each discipline, so for me, there are many, many thanks for posting this excellent video! It almost makes me wish I was back in Kent, then I read the news! Chris B.
What a find this channel has been for me, started my engine fitter apprenticeship in a Glasgow shipyard in 1961, best thing I ever did, we got a big wooden tool box, a 2 1/4 lb hammer and a flat chisel, building a toolkit was up to us, our journey men helped us. My longest period out of work was one week.
The "transitional" plane actually came out after Stanley came out with the steel plane. They went back to use wood soles for a short time just to help win over the old timers.

I have the same hammer as Brenton. I have had it for decades. I use it so much for so many different things. I model railways. It turned out to be the perfect tool for hammering in small track pins. I think it would be capable of sawing, planeing and painting with..Just needs a little modification.
Hi Dom, the commonist theme throughout this is the tools that are handed down or purchased a while back, which I must say that I agree with. Modern tools just don't seem to have the same feel to them. Before you say about your Ranalah's - they are different in a way but I sure Geoff would say that he prefers his old wheels to your new ones until they had a couple of decades of usage. Ha Ha. Thanks for the video and as a few of the other comments have said I love the little lathe machine. Cheers.
Thanks Dom that was so interesting maybe you'll catch up with some other repair shop guys. I'm a retired hammer man and started my panel beating apprenticeship in 1969 at Northwest kent College.

My grandfather was a horologist and I now have his watchmakers lathe and small bench top lathe, which I treasure after many hours looking over his shoulder as a youngster, sadly I don’t have his skills to put them to good use! Anyway, I have often told apprentices and others that you have to look after ur tools because you develop a “feel” for them which makes them easier to work with. You can tell from the looks you get in response if the person has any experience of hand tools, but even using something as simple as a your own screwdriver is more comfortable than a borrowed one!
Using someone else's tools is like wearing someone else's boots. Never the same.

I served my apprenticeship as a coppersmith andmy hammers were made by the blacksmith plemishing hammers are of
different weights ranging from quarter pound up to 4 pound ball curved and flat faces with hickory handles. They are matched to your body waight. I have had mine for over 55 years .

I have literally thousands of tools some old some new some good some bad ,my favourites however are the ones I've made myself for a particular job usually a "one off"😎
I agree, it's great to see someone else who appreciates the importance of good tools. I found (like you?) -that some tools simply couldn't do the job due to poor design, or an appropriate tool didn't exist so I too made my own tools, including a set of miniature wood carving chisels that are still in daily use.
Good start of a new series dedicated to tools. ie: most expensive / oldest / best find / most sentimental / history / etc, etc, etc.

I do loads of home repair of all sorts. I do have a couple fancy machines, but the thing I reach for in the most varied instances is my small steel awl. Repairing thick fabric, shoes, cleaning, beadwork.

Every day, Sealy premier quick change knife. Favourite it’s my late grandfathers brass back tenon saw, wg wyzack and son. It’s in the workshop so can’t check the spelling in the maker 😂

The tool I would be most upset to loose is a pair of Linstrom piano wire cutters, my most used tool a 5/16 deep reach 1/4 drive snap-on socket. Boeing still build aircraft with unified bolts, 5/16 AF for a 10-32 bolt.
Dom, I have the exact same Snap-On toolbox, which also goes everywhere with me, I have an old MoD Land Rover so it comes with me, just in case, but other than that it has one of everything I might need to make sure I can make running repairs wherever I might be, I love it…but my favourite tool has to be my Leatherman, because of its versatility and it’s been all over the World with me too ! Now, about this Spitfire Ranalah, can I buy it from you, I need one in my life ?

An interesting thing I’ve noticed, your filming in quite natural lighting conditions really makes all of the team look… and I’m hesitating before saying this… but ‘much nicer’ than under the harsher studio lighting… 😊
ive had my snap on tool box since i was a youngster but never could afford the tools to go in so most of mine are cheap ones but do the jobs i need them for.
