  • NO! It's not the Angry VideoGame Nerd. It's the Tinfoil Hat RetroGame Dweeb! And he's taking on the Worst Shoot Em Ups Ever created in this tribute to the legendary AVGN and terrible retro games. Timmy wants to play Trevor McFur on the Atari Jaguar, convinced it's not one of the worst shmups as many claim. But his struggle to get good and complete the game takes him down a rabbit hole of truly horrible shoot em ups that both he, and the Shmup Junkie may not survive. Will they be able to destroy some of the worst shoot em ups of all time before it's too late? Or will evil incarnate NES Silver Surfer and PC Engine Deep Blue succeed in making this the final episode? Don't miss the wildest, most insane
    homage to the AVGN greats yet made, Shmup Junkie style! Guaranteed to make you go Dragon Ball Super Saiyan!

      I have a friend that runs a channel and a show called the Jag bar that has some interesting takes on it. It seems like a system that had potential but almost no dev either bothered or spent enough time to use properly. They seemed to have the right ingredients being a very low price point and it still just didn't sell. Goes to show that even a low price point can't overcome the lack of interesting games. My Jag history is very lacking though so I have a lot to learn in terms of what really went down with it. I did watch the Wrestling with Games episode which was pretty enlightening.

    • @creativecatproductions

      @@ShmupJunkie the gaming press torched it. I was all over every one of those magazine back in the day and I think the only positively rated game I can recall was the one that constantly says “where did you learn to fly” and eventually the Alien Trilogy.
      I think it lacked any major 3rd party titles. No mortal kombat, no street fighter, no good mascot game, or platformer. It just sucked.
      We’ve kind of turned the corner and I think there’s been an attempt to exonerate some of these consoles like the 32X but I still don’t think they’re very good 😆
      I’d much rather play Genesis, Snes, pc engine, or even the 3DO or Jaguar which did have a lot of good games. Also that controller is soooo bad. Oh man

    What I've heard is Atari wouldn't pay for the extra cartridge space needed to put music in the game. It's like a 4 MB cards but it had to have super high resolution art. That's also why the reviewers liked the graphics. Seeing high resolution graphics like this from a console is kind of a novelty back then.

    • @ShmupJunkie
      @ShmupJunkie  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was really weird for me as I don't recall being impressed with the graphics at all at the time besides being higher res. They were really flat and not that interesting. I didn't know that about the cart space wow. If Atari was the one to choose no music due to cart space for a launch game that'd be a pretty bone headed move. Was that in an article somewhere?

    • @jeremygregorio7472

      @@ShmupJunkie I think TH-camr Kim Justice covered it in his video about Jack Tramial who was the guy running Atari at the time. Jack was always kind of a tightwad and he was a businessman so he wouldn't have understood games. His thoughts on Atari would have been based entirely on using the brand name to make some money in the game market. So corner cutting wouldn't have been such an issue for him.
      To be fair most consoles have some crappy launch titles, a lot of times tech demos get turned into games and that's what this feels like. It doesn't help that it's got a very Euro shmup vibe to it, and Euro shmups are super hit and miss.

    The fact that you manage to keep these videos accessible to anyone while sprinkling in little things for people a bit more into games is fantastic. I chuckled right away at the look of pride on Timmy's face when he says he had to fight the dog for his costume, and even more during training when the Hudson button press meter that Takahashi Meijin used to demonstrate his incredible mashing in the caravan days. Lots of references, too... Tenacious D in the ending caught me off guard for some reason. Hadn't heard the tribute song in a long time, and seeing that lyric took me back.
    It was worth my long session with McFur last night to be in tune with Timmy.

    • @ShmupJunkie
      @ShmupJunkie  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That’s part of the fun. Seeing how many references I could sneak in for people to catch and enjoy. I like messing with that Hudson watch it’s always hanging out nearby. Though we don’t need mashing skills anymore. To Be the Best is probably my fav Video and montage music the D did a while back. It still slays me. I love the D in general. If it wouldn’t have been a copyright claim I would’ve used that song in the training sequence. But it turned out a great dude on my discord made me that original song to use and it turned out great!

    I would like to weigh in on the "Pack In Video can't make a good video game" debate. They are actually responsible for both Magical Pop'n and Iron Commando which are 2 of the most coveted Super Famicom games for most collectors. Each one is a fantastic example of their respective genre's and go for well over the $500 price range. To say they can't make a good video game is definitely not doing them any justice. Anyways your video was great like usual. I'm with you that Trevor McFur could have been a great send up to over the top 80's cheese but sadly they missed the mark on that one.

    • @ShmupJunkie
      @ShmupJunkie  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You’re completely right about that! It was more of a joke on their name but you’re still right. From what I’d read, so correct me if I’m wrong, they mainly contracted out their projects and did a lot of licensed games. So the quality varied based on who they had do the actual development.

    • @RetroDrew
      @RetroDrew 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ShmupJunkie I couldn't tell how much of a joke it was or not so forgive me on that one. But you are correct they did release a handful of infamous licensed games including NES Rambo, NES Predator, and Friday The 13th. However they also played a part in the release of a few a Natsume titles like Kabuki Quantum Fighter and the very first Harvest Moon!

      I have a feeling your world record is safe on that for the foreseeable future haha. You gonna run the record for Deep Blue also or is that game where you draw the line? @AirZonkWorldChamp 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ShmupJunkie I have the record for the PC Engine of Deep Blue at the moment but there's isn't much competition. It's so strange and so poorly designed that certain enemies can hit you 20 times and barely damage the A.N.G.E.L. yet certain ones can hit you only four times and boom that's it. The game is very unpredictable and all three weapons are not too effective since they all fire straight and avoiding enemies can only go so far especially in higher loops. Deep Blue rightfully deserves its bad rep.

      Hey Ryan! I've been playing some Air Zonk lately. I love it! I just can't seem to figure out the powerup system. There's always so much crap happening onscreen that I just grab whatever I can but I'm pretty sure that's not the right approach. I mentioned in another comment that it's fascinating to me how different the shooters seem to be across the systems of that time, and one of the things I figured out about PCE/TG-16 shooters is that it seems like powerups are floating around like crazy, but you have to choose to pass up many of them in order to build the weapon you want (Blazing Lazers; geez!) I made it to "Land of Drool" (level 6 I think; the one with all the boss fights) and that was about it for the night. Is that the last level? Any quick, simple tips for dummies? I realize I could just look this up online, but it's not every day you get to talk to the champ!!!
      Take care man!

    • @AirZonkWorldChamp
      @AirZonkWorldChamp 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ChrisSmith-cd7uw Thanks there. Yeah, the Land of Drool is insane and yes it's the last level. I recommend finding weapons like the Cards (great spread), Electric Beam (decent power), and the Lightning Strikes (nice defense) plus I also like using their charge attacks before a fight to help clear the area and do heavy damage early in the fight for bosses. I recommend avoiding the small zonk power ups since it lacks power and you still die with one hit. Grabbing smiles helps getting your friends faster in the battle too. Hope this helps.

    "I don't blame the developers, I blame the Atari" wasn't McFur made *by* Atari? Then again, the main trio of lead creatives - Eric Ginner, Susan McBride and James Hampton - worked on some otherwise good games, like Gauntlet, Lynx Batman Returns, Gubble, or Alien vs Predator.

    • @ShmupJunkie
      @ShmupJunkie  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      McFur was made by a separate dev studio for Atari. And yeah Atari made some great games. I only blame Atari as they didn't give the devs enough time to truly finish the game and rushed it out for launch. So it's hard to blame them for being forced to release an unfinished product. It had potential but needed more time.

    Shmups is a genre that has fallen due to focusing too much on maintaining a high difficulty (often artificial, almost unplayable) and not on good level design. The ideal for a shmup is a balance between good difficulty (high but not unplayable), good level design (not just shooting, but adding interesting elements to the scenarios), variation between the attack pattern of each enemy and good rhythm.

    • @ShmupJunkie
      @ShmupJunkie  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No I don’t disagree with you at all on 1942. It’s pretty classic and I played it in arcades too. I just really disliked it on NES as by the time it came out it was just so tedious and repetitive with really poor music compared to many other nes shooters. So I never got on with it. But it doesn’t belong in a pile of truly crap games. I don’t think one should take anything seriously in this terrible parody video lol I was just having dumb fun and throwing things around being silly. But I do disagree on Deep Blue. McFur to me actually had decent control and mechanics with some kind of progression. It just feels like an unfinished game. Deep Blue doesn’t even feel like a game to me and like they just slapped something together and didn’t care. I’ve always found it to be the worst of the worst in terms of gameplay or lack thereof. But that’s something I’m ok being in disagreement with 🤣. Sorry for doing 1942 a bit dirty it’s certainly a classic just not one I found any fun with by the time it hit NES. But I know how many people are nostalgic for it.

      @@ShmupJunkie You always show a great deal of respect for things people may love in a wise and cautious manner, specifically I find. I was subbed to your channel from a while back but really started watching again because 1.) I'm starting to get series about getting (actually) good at shooters and
      2.) I was watching a "that which cannot be tamed" or "she who can't be named" or whatever and as usual she was voicing the "I just can't get into this classic shit" routine about Tetsujin and I got pissed and watched one of your videos afterward and noticed how generous you were about some dumb game that really does kinda suck and thought "he really doesn't need to be so kind but I know why he's doing it and respect that wisdom." So I started binging your channel while I'm trying to route out Tetsujin Ou. I was going to leave a comment saying you are basically the new Classic Game Room Mark but then today I heard Classic Game Room Mark is comong back to youtube. Now I just hope you and electric underground guy end up being in some kind of collaboration or something.
      I've always felt my love for games like 1942 was a symptom of my developmental disorder, it's definitely not for everyone. It's important historically and all but I remember thinking it was kinda almost intentionally made to be plain in a "goverment issue" WW2 fashion and that it was extremely dry and a bitter pill when it was new and I was a fan. So the compromised NES port is definitely fair game and yes, came off bad in the time it was released in America. One of the many things that helped alienate American console kids from the arcade shooter thing.
      Can't wait to see that Toaplan Documentary.

      Thanks. I had a blast making it too. I don’t go full comedy very often as they don’t seem to do as well as some of my other history and topical videos. But I still pepper it in on random episodes I do too, as it’s fun. That ridiculous final battle is one I’ll gladly rewatch and laugh at myself too sometimes. Although my son was embarrassed by it 🤣... my job as a dad is now complete.

      @@ShmupJunkie When you said you were 15 when the Jaguar came out that gave me more of an idea of how old you were. I'm guessing born in 78 or so.. your collection is insane. And I didn't know you were also a father. That's awesome. You've done great in life from the looks of it. I'm 30 with no kids but I've got a long way to go. Still live at home 😔
