  • Here we have a restoration of a 1950's Craftsman Benchtop Drill Press. This was acquired for free off the street near San Francisco. Also features Sergio Leone style cowboy stop motion fun. Enjoy!

    The restoration alone was great. The videography and soundtrack make this a masterpiece. Brilliant job.
    Edit to add that I have 2 floor-standing versions of this DP to restore. One of them has the Vari-Slo speed adjustment attachment that is prone to breakage from heavy-handed treatment, which will be a challenge for me.

    Using this video as a reference, I just finished restoring the Dunlap version that I picked up from a machinist. It was my first time using an ultrasonic cleaner, and it was amazing how well Evapo-Rust worked. I went a step further also placing the smaller parts in a metal mesh tea ball suspended in the cleaner. The motor was the most difficult to disassemble/reassemble. Using a punch on the motor housing was a great tip!

      Awesome. Yeah the marking of the motor housing is crucial. If I'm remembering correctly, I think I picked that up from a Mr. Pete video. Glad the video was helpful.

      I'm doing a restoration project myself. I believe you can use a soft to medium wire disc wheel on a grindor. Depends the size. Mine is a dewalt4" and with the soft wire wheel, it removed the rust nicely without scratching the metal.

    Beautiful work. I just inherited my great grandfather's 1955 craftsman floorstanding drill press and just about have my mind set on doing a full restoration like this to it. After some rust disolver on a few small parts im trying to figure out how you got rid of the dull gray finish it leaves on the steel. I tried a wire wheel and it brings the color back but the tool marks left behind aren't pretty. Is the wire wheel you used particularly soft/fine or is your technique that much better than mine?

    • @spaghetticallahan9292
      @spaghetticallahan9292  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This was a while ago now but I believe I used a coarse crimped type wire wheel. The braided types, in my experience, leave the heaviest tool marks behind afterwards. If the crimped bristle stainless ones are still too rough, maybe a brass bristle brush, also not braided. Also mounting the wire wheel in a drill press gives you some control over the speed which may also be helpful. Good luck with the restoration and please let me know if this was helpful.

    • @spaghetticallahan9292
      @spaghetticallahan9292  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Just looked back, it was a Forney 72742 Coarse Crimped Wire Wheel Brush. Also just letting the parts glide along the tips of the bristles helps, rather than loading the wheel at all.

    • @ryanb2024
      @ryanb2024 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@spaghetticallahan9292 appreciate the response. I wonder if the rust dissolver I used left a particularly thick layer of discolored steel. Just tried another part using an 8 inch crimped brass wire wheel in my bench grinder on the lowest speed and the least amount of pressure and got the same results.

    Heyyyyy, follow up question, how did you get that piece out at 3:24? I took at the round piece on the side but I'm confused on how you're hitting it to make it come loose

    • @spaghetticallahan9292
      @spaghetticallahan9292  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      So on one side of the head casting (left side if your looking at the press from the front) there is the spring assembly for the quill return. On the opposing side (right side) there is the quill handle assembly which moves the quill up and down using a rack and pinion style gear that interacts with the grooves on the back of the spindle. Once both of these parts (spring assembly and quill handle assembly) are completely removed along with the pulley of course, the spindle should slide out the bottom. In the video at 3:24, I am actually hitting the table down which was preventing the spindle from being able to come out. The table was frozen to the column with rust. Hopefully this helps.

      The chuck is set on a JT-33 taper. They make specifically sized wedges that you can use to remove the chuck. Sometimes they jump right off and sometimes they put up a fight. I left the original on in this case and just replaced the bearing that rides above the chuck. Also noteworthy, on the older presses there is often a threaded collar above the chuck that both helps to seat the taper and to release it. On my larger floor model craftsman I replaced the older 1/2" Jacobs chuck with a keyless chuck. The mounted chuck is shown in both the other drill press videos I have up at the moment.

    Hey, I have this same drill press and am confused on how to change the belt speed. The belt seems way to tight to move so I must be missing something

    • @spaghetticallahan9292
      @spaghetticallahan9292  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The tension between the pulleys is set using the two horizontal bars attached to the motor mounting plate. At approx 3:25 in the video you can see the removal of the motor mount plate and the aforementioned bars. These bars are adjusted using the two “Frankenstein” looking bolts coming out of either side of the drill press head. In short, loosen these bolts a little, lightly tap the motor assembly/rear pulley toward the front of the press and this will relieve the tension on the belts. Ideally you would get it positioned to where the belt is tensioned but you can still roll the belt by hand between the steps on the pulleys to adjust speed. I hope this is helpful.

I'm trying to take off the table and the bottom plate from the pole without taking off the top or motor.
