Collecting Rugs: What to Look For

They can be surprisingly affordable and always very practical. Here’s what you should know to become a knowledgeable rug collector. What people call Oriental rugs may come from many regions. They can be Persian, Turkish, Chinese, Indian and more. The Main background is called the field The motif in the center is the medallion Here’s a tip: If you’re placing furniture on the rug, you probably want an all over design They come in many shapes and sizes. Area rugs are Rectangular, Square or Round. Runners are Narrow and long Any rug can be used for praying. Rugs known as prayer rugs have an arched doorway that is used to point toward Mecca. Here are some signs of a better rug: Complexity of design Quality of the wool, cotton or silk The number of colors used in the rug How finely it’s woven In hand knotted rugs, the pattern should be clearly visible on the back and the front. Here’s what you should watch for: Rugs should feel smooth, not hard. Fringes should not be sewn on. Perfect symmetry is a sign of a machine made rug. If you’re checking for repairs, turn it over and examine the back. Expert repairs are not an issue but poor repairs can harm a rug’s value. Finally, when measuring your space for a rug, subtract two or three feet on each side so the rug shows well. We’ll see you at the next sale.
