  • Just because I'm not in my own shop with my own equipment doesn't mean I can't make things out of wood. Sure, it's a whole lot easier with well maintained and finely tuned equipment, but life isn't about what's easy. It's about making things work. This is one of those projects.

    As so many others have said, it’s tremendous to see a fine furniture maker showing that the expensive array of tools is not necessary to make. I particularly liked the part about flat enough. It should be so encouraging for people to understand the relative needs for accuracy. It’s a shelf; if it stays up and doesn’t let things roll off, it’s a shelf

    • @ENCurtis
      @ENCurtis  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I’m glad it feels helpful for folks. And “relative accuracy” is a great way to phrase the entire point of this video.

    Good call on altering your plans. To paraphrase Gen. Moltke, no plan survives first contact with the enemy. Yea, I know there's no "enemy", but plans are frameworks to reach a goal. If the plans are not flexible, they will break. I, for one, watch your efforts because of what you have to say and for what you are capable of teaching. I have learned a good number of things from you. Whatever this new endeavor is, I am looking forward to seeing how you approach the project and how you make it the best it can be. I watch this and other woodworking channels for ideas; especially "how could I do ABC with the XYZ I have" to minimise what additional "accessories" I would like (need) to buy, such as a speed square, a pocket hole jig (I've got no problems with pocket holes). Allready brought a shop-vac as I needed a new vacuum cleaner for my apartment (which is also doubleing as my shop, though biege carpete isn't conducive to sawdust ~ bit worred that eventually the carpet will be thread-bare)
      My accuracy will not be to the same level as that of the "not-so-average" TH-cam woodworking channel that has a plethora of high-end "amateur" tools like a Festool everything ( though a Festool Domino is on my "tools to try" bucket list), Woodpecker rules and squares,... but if I don't tell anyone, no one will probably know. 😁

    While I fully agree with the message of the vid, its still really annoying when you complete something and it doesnt look perfect. Either because of lack of materials, or bad planning at the beggining, just forking up at measurements and then no way to walk back. Im not a woodworker (though am very intent on pursuing that when i can), but a few years ago me and my family decided to build a sauna building with a dinning room and a terrace around it. We had little to none beforehand experience in anything of the sort. We finished it, im super proud of it, but i know every little mishap at every board, screw, missalignment. Everything. And its hard to not see it. No guests will know about it (prob). But i do :). However it does feel like i learned a lot, because our next project is going way more swimingly

    • @ENCurtis

    Fantastic message! I have some expensive tools but was suffering from “woodworkers block”. A Catch-22 where I don’t know how to do X but the only way to learn is to try to do X. Or better yet, break the project down into separate skill sets and find something that uses 1 or 2 of them.
    Lots of U-Tubers build shop furniture that looks as good as my kitchen cabinets, if not better. Right now, I’m intimidated by the thought of building a drawer. Any drawer. It doesn’t have to be perfect … it just needs to function. Right? So 1 drawer under the router table seems like a good place to start.

      You nailed it on the head. All you can do is move forward my dude. Do not fear failure. In fact, go seek it out. Go make a shitty drawer. Goof it up something serious. And then try again. By the time you’re done I’m willing to bet you’ll have a decent enough drawer to work 👊

      I meant the checking (cracks) had gone straight through and had left the piece somewhat weak. Reinforcing the fibers with epoxy helped to make it strong enough to use as a shelf.

    You know I always enjoy your videos! One question: in this video I see you are sanding the epoxy without collecting the dust. As far as I know, epoxy is just polyester, plastic, so you're launching little bits of plastic into the garden air. Doesn't that contribute to the plastic microfibers that increasingly contaminate our soil? Or am I seeing this wrong, do you have knowledge that epoxy dust is harmless to the environment? I would really like to know, because I put a lot of effort into collecting all this dust at my work and thus keeping my neighborhood free of my plastic waste.

    • @targas1008
      @targas1008 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Good point. I‘d assume you‘re right, but I‘m not using epoxy at all. I would go for shellac instead.

    • @ENCurtis
      @ENCurtis  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You’re exactly right, unfortunately. With a lack of equipment it’s hard to work ideally, but a dust extraction would have made a big difference to your point. Had I had a penetrating epoxy to stabilize the pieces it would have absorbed more completely and lessened the polymers being abraded as well.

    Great little project and looked great. But don’t discount “just doing carpentry work” not fine tuned furniture. I was a contractor for 40 years and did my “carpentry work” fined tuned. The tighter things are framed , built, laid out correctly, plumb level square makes for a much better finished project. I don’t think you meant much by that phrase but that’s what I thought it sounded like. Carpentry is less than furniture work. I’ll keep watching watching.

    • @ENCurtis
      @ENCurtis  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      For sure. I consider myself a carpenter first and foremost. Not meant as a slight on the exacting nature of carpentry so much as picking on us woodworkers for being overly obsessed with 1/128ths and nanometers.

    • @ENCurtis
      @ENCurtis  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Normally I would, however the wider shelf is over 6” wide which is just a little too much leverage for me to be comfortable with in wood that was aged so much.
