This was my favourite song for many years. Turned it right up in the car when it went on. Had not known Jeff sang this song. What an amazing person and performer.
One of the best voices Aust has produced and tremendous entertainer. Great bloke, watch this video and think of what you feel has been a bad day for you. Inspirational.
Met him at Newport Arms about 15 years ago....absolute top bloke....Teach Me How To Fly was the first record i bought with my own pocket money when i was about 5.
Truly a unique man ! Only rock star I’ve ever known in a wheel chair and this was 60- 70s ..... best concert I saw him in was Moore park about 1972-3 2SM free concert ... was on stage with a heap of others but he’s the guy that I remember the most ...
I uploaded the full Jeff St. John documentry on my other channel, hiptony2 . It features rare Australian music videos from the 50s ,60s, 70s etc. See video response below.
I remember seeing him live every weekend in Sydney (yeah, I'm an oldie). Can't recall the name of the venue. May have been "The Place"but it was up an alley with a huge curtain as the door. It was JSJ & the Id. I recall he got mugged around that time while in a wheelchair! What bastards! Thank you Jeff for the wonderful times (and they didn't include drugs or grog).
He retired and moved to Perth for a couple of decades. Came out of retirement to record a fantastic 'Blues album, and again for the 2000 Olympics to sing the National Anthem for the Para Olympics. He had a beautiful partner who cared for him till he passed after a long battle to keep some physical comfort with many operations. I was very privileged to be on his very active FB page for a couple of yrs before he passed.
Kids are so innocent they just ask what they want to know "how did you get in the wheel chair?' for years Jeff made up a story about his incapacity saying he was injured in a car accident, only later coming out to say he had spina bifida
@unclegaz Mate, he was in my brothers Gearbox shop today getting work done on his car! I said to my bro you should have called me, i would have shot down there just to meet him! Love the bloke! ( in Perth).
I was lucky enough to get on to his FB page a couple of years before he passed - and it was a delight - except for being aware of all his operations to try and get some physical comfort. It was so sad when he passed - but hopefully in a more peaceful place now.
