When Kamal is long gone and his admirers like us.. 40 or 50 years later, this movie will remain etched in the memory of film goers.
This movie if at all beyond all its commercial elements depicts the quality and uniqueness of Gandhi. That’s why the character of the rebellious Ram played brilliantly by Kamal who is anti Gandhi reforms himself after realising the true character of Gandhi becomes apologetic.
It is a wonderfully scripted movie, brilliant screenplay. Was meant for the thinking audience. The audience couldn’t digest it back then. Now after so many years it is still being discussed abd debated.
Leave Kamal the husband who hasn’t succeeded in his many marriages and partnerships, as a thinking and creative human being and thought provoking activist is one of his kind. I can’t think of any actor I dare say this who has performed the array of roles and characters like him. From age 5.5 onwards what a journey it has been.
Acting, dance, screen play, music sense, makeup, production, knowledge of cinema, its technicalities and many things more is a virtuoso. A true Bharata Ratna and universe Kala Ratna

Some of titbit trivia on Hey Ram movie...
* Hey Ram was completely recorded with LIVE VOICE during the shooting...unlike any normal movie, where dialogues delivery are dubbed later in a studio.
*Hey Ram movies initial music composer was Ace Violinist L.Subramaniam.After music composition, recording of songs were all over and the entire shoot was complete with just the Back Ground score pending,..it seems L.Subramaniam walked out of the project citing some reason...then came in Illayaraja and the rest is history.
* Sharukh Khan is the only artist who worked in Hey Ram WITHOUT PAYMENT. It seems Shahrukh Khan refused to take any remuneration for this movie, because he felt sharing screen space with Kamalhassan is in itself is a big remuneration and so he was not taking any money for working in Hey ram.
* Hema Malini was very upset that her role in Hey Ram was cut down to bare minimum role and she was more like a guest appearance artist.
* Mani Ratnam after watching Hey Ram had said that he was happy that there are Film Makers like kamal who are boldly venturing and making movies beyond the typical routine.
* There was a talk in the Tinseltown that time that actually, Hey Ram was offered to Mani Ratnam for direction by Kamalahassan, but due to some reason Mani Ratnam refused to take the offer.
* A popular tv news channel at that time showed a clip of Gopal Godse (brother of Nathuram Godse) coming out of a theatre complex after watching Hey Ram, surrounded by a huge crowd and by standers.
*Tushar Gandhi ( Great Grandson of Mahatma Gandhi ) made a Cameo role in Hey Ram as himself.
* Hey Ram was dedicated to Late.Ananthu as a tribute to kamal's friend, philosopher and guide in cinema.
Hey ram was dedicated to his late friend ananthu 😮 ? Even his old film aval appadithan was dedicated to ananthu ..in title credit its shown

Don't play politics on the occasion of announcing deserved artists while announcing award. There is no one bigger than Kamal Hassan in Indian cinema to receive Dada Sakib Palke award. Denying this award to Kamal is an insult to Indian cinema industry !!

Hey Ram, like some of Kamal’s movie was ahead of its time. Fantastic movie. But Kamal could have avoided certain over the top bedroom scenes it just spoiled the movies flow.
The movie was ahead of its times...hence it didn't go well commercially...its a cult film ❤

Sivaji Ganesan make no mistake is a highly versatile and highly talented actor and one of his kind. Has he overacted . Yes without a doubt. A real connoisseur of cinema will call it out not fanatics.
Watch mrudunga Chakravarthy as an example abd most of his movies between 1970-1985, you will find evidence of his exaggerated acting.
So when he was under the baton of good directors like AP Natarajan you will see the balance. Look at his performances in thillana mohanambal, thevar Magan, mudhal maryadai and several others, you see subtle and balanced acting.
I do not buy the argument of rural audience wanting over the top performances. Kannada Rajkumar or Telugu SV Rangarao or the Malayalam actors of their times, did they indulge in overacting. Not at all. Most of their movies were shot in madras in the same studios.
Appreciate actors abd applaud them for their performances. Critique them where due.

SRK without listening to the script accepted the role & refused payment for 'Hey Ram'.Instead asked Kamal to act in 'Kal Ho Na Ho' 3 years later. Kamal heard the script and refused the offer. SRK replaced him with Saif Ali Khan and started avoiding Kamal from then on. Though he mentions his name along with Rajini on stage, he long back blocked Kamal's number

Film flopped because of historical inaccuracy .. Gandhi should have been shown in the negative shade only .. but to satisfy a group, kamal compromised and that why it was a disastrous flop. 55 crores at that time(not 55 lacs as told in interview) was hitting our country's economy. So no regrets .. kamal's compromise was the real reason
