    At least these cars had something to do with "real" cars one could buy. These days ALL classes are dedicated race-cars have NOTHING to do with regular cars.

    Wow, i wasn't even one year old when this race took place, but even looking at it now i still recognise parts of Birmingham, especially up to what is now the Currys island and then down past the Mosque, great stuff!

    Steve Ryder made motorsport 2.5 times as much fun to watch in the '80s and '90s, and it was already 40 times more exciting than the racing of today. Smithy always was an antsy type.

    Monaco of the Midlands - squint and you cant see the difference...ahem. Not the nicest parts of Brum to be fair, even in those days. I go bouldering just off the circuit here on Sherlock Street and every time i walk past the circuit i think of these races.

    Vic & Clive from ARE got good coverage here too, awesome.
    Rouse irregularities im sure was down to his Turbo modifications as of which Trackstar highlighted protested.
    However Rouse produced documentation that repairs to the turbo where allowed & the protest was thrown away.
    This era was incredible & the cars where amazing.

    Back when BTCC was about more than drivers constantly deliberately ramming each other for the amusement of idiots that mistake that for 'real racing'.

    I watched this race up by the roundabout. 10 years old and didn’t realise was watching the pinnacle of saloon car racing. Truly great machinery, great circuit and even greater drivers. Monaco of the midlands??? Was Walker smoking some of the local crack??😂

    Motorsport as of today has lost EXACTLY what this formula was all about.
    Touring cars Tin Tops was about what the Road car (sold by manufacturer) could be made into to perform in competition.
    Btcc lost this.
    Fantastic racing & with amazing drivers.
    Rouse stood out in many areas, he’s a unique individual & played a HUGE part in his era.

    Proper commentary that actually describes what is going o rather than the modern commentary which is just people chatting like they are on the sofa, mostly about tyres and pits stops.

    Rouse clearly faster and was being held up by Tim. Engine irregularities?! Wonderful racing on a difficult circuit.

      Think/sure Rouse would of had a very slight edge with his ARE/Zytek map + his driving skills.
      He obviously built the Labbats cars & controlled everything.

    • @theant9821
      @theant9821 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stephenking9271Andy built them but i Labatts had their own team to prepare and maintain them. If the labatts cars were down on power its the labatts team to blame surely?

    • @stephenking9271
      @stephenking9271 ปีที่แล้ว

      @theant9821
      ARE supplied everything to team Labatts as they were sister team so to speak. Also believe prepared out of ARE workshops so basically was Rouse customer team.
      Needs an ex ARE guy to answer this one but I do know that ARE controlled obviously what went to there team (kaliber) & what was going to customers of there product.
      Many cars on the grid back then bought Rouse kits & where supplied eprom for the Zytek ecu.
      Rouse had more grunt, but poss I’m wrong either way Rouse was a master behind the wheel.
      Still cannot get over how he did it:
      Engineer
      Driver
      Team owner
      Boss
      & awesome technician
      Massively skilled & don’t breed them like that anymore that’s for sure.

    It's nice to see the full coverage, as the Official Review cuts to the last lap, after Rouse barges past Harvey. Saying that, it's still disappointing that after showing the Gravett/Hodgetts scrap, there's no footage of how Chris gets by and scores what was his best result of the year!

    Got recommended this.
    I still, even to this day, find it hard to ollow the multi class ormat of the 80s BTCC, yet I can understand sports car points no problem. That being said, knowing, with hindsight how the following year's Super Touring era would end up...
    It makes me kind of wonder how a mid 90s Audi or Renault would have fared on the track. Super Touring was road based to a point, up until Alfa showed up in 94 and had that wing in the boot and the insinuation you get a spanner, you put the wing on, it's legal because the road car has it.
    Also, or people going oh you could buy those sorts of cars in the showrooms. Not really. Homogolation specials were absolutely a thing in the 80s/90s, even before the absolute insanity that was Group C prototypes and Super Touring. Class A touring cars wer homogolation specials, you weren't going to just go buy Andy Rouse's Sierra at your local Ord dealership at all. Look up the 87 Bathurst WTCC round for somewhat more info on it.
