The 9500 has schematic directions on the back of the unit. Find a 9500 and take a pic.

Man, I love this EQ but my right side has just died and I am not sure if it's something I did or if the EQ has just seen better days! Anyway, great video, man!

Check your cables and spray the switches/controls/sliders with Deoxit. This EQ had issues (its only downside, but switches are abundant and inexpensive) with those push-on/push-off switches for the tape loop going bad after 40 years. The EQ switches don't go bad, but that tape loop switch may need to be replaced. When it goes, it won't stay engaged. IF you don't use the loop, it won't matter anyway. It's likely either a bad cable or a dirty RCA jack or switch. Deoxit has saved MANY a tech needless headaches. And it lasts for years...

First, almost all Pioneer equipment is good quality. This SG 9800 could have been better. They just added two more sliders 16hz and 32khz, otherwise its the same as the SG 9500. The 32khz is useless, maybe your dog can hear it, but adult humans can't hear much above 15khz. The 16hz is to low to be effective. Not even as a sub-sonic filter. It would be more practical to have output controls, bi-directional dubbing controls and adjustable LED power meters and a good sub-sonic filter, like 18db/oct @ 15hz. Still its a nice unit, but an ADC Sound Shaper Two IC would be a better value. I got mine in 1982 and its still working (no repairs) for 34 years! The 3db and 6db switches on the 9800 aren't as useful as seperate output controls. I own a Pioneer RG 2, a PL 518 and an SX 434, they're good stuff. Should pass on this SG 9800. Really sorry for the shoot down but like I said, it could have been better.

Hi Bruce, I have to say OUCH! and touche, guess I deserved that. But really the SX 434 isn't a bad receiver. If used in a small room say 3 Meters x 3 Meters and driving efficient speakers. Mine is in the kitchen driving a Nakamichi BX 1 cassette deck and Boston Acoustics A 40 speakers (5 watts minimum power).
I never said it was my main receiver. I said almost all Pioneer stuff was good quality. I'm sure ALL of us don't like hearing our equipment berated. Hifi isn't about having the BEST stuff, but more about having the best we can AFFORD. You know I gotta tell ya what I have. Marantz 2252B receiver, ADC sound Shaper 2 IC equalizer, Pioneer RG 2 Processor. Teac X3 open reel deck. Pioneer PL 518 turntable, two cassette decks, Yamaha KX 260 and Technics M 224, Sony CDP 212 cd player. Ohm Acoustics Model L, and EPI 180 speakers and Koss Pro 4x headphones. Not a ton of stuff and certainly not the most expensive, but it satisfies my needs.
You should check out this web site-Classic Receivers Pioneer SX 424. It says some nice things about the 434. I also have a reveiw from Stereo/ Hifi Equipment magazine ( Nov. 1979) of your Pioneer SG 9800 equalizer. It's a very good review and I would like to send it to you (free).
I never said the SG 9800 was BAD, just that it could've been better designed.

Holy moly Bruce, you could open an audio store with your collection. I literally had to research some of your components. I'm not impressed with your equipment, I'm astonished! There is NOTHING low end about your systems. Where the heck do you store everything? How often do you switch units around?
I always wanted an SX 950, 85wpc and 42lbs. but didn't happen. Your Adcom 565's stunned me, 850wpc into 2 ohm's, wow and 106db S/N. Liked your SX 1010 (100wpc) I think that receiver started the Monster Receiver Wars back in the 1970's.
Had to look up the Paradighm's, $1,300! and the Revel F30's, (+/- 1db to 33hz) $3,500 pair. You did say low end? Put me in your will, PLEASE.
I would still like to email or USPS the Stereo/HIFI Equipment review for the SG 9800 (two pages) from 1979 to you. As a peace offering. just send me your address or email and I'll get it off to you. I guess you know your audio.

Marty, had an sx-650 for years and it sounded absolutely amazing. It comes down to your listening room AND your ears.

    • @martyjewell5683

Ah, the pioneer SX- 650. First let me get the complaints out of the way. I really liked the blue dial lights of the 30 series (SX- 636) much better, but have to admit there's something sexy about the silver face plate. The chicks (women) I had over loved the shiny front panel.
The biggest problem was with the power switch on a rotary knob with the speakers. The SX- 650 had no muting delay when powered up, this COULD lead to switching noise. A push button or toggle switch would have been better. Speaking of toggles, the front panel toggle switches had a very positive feel (and sound) when flipped on or off, nice touch!
Good things about the SX- 650? You bet. It offered 35 wpc and in 1977 that was neat. Also had a very good FM front end for a unit in its price range. Two tape monitors and an aux input plus high filter (only 6db/oct but helpful). Only one way dubbing was possible, but hey most other 35 watt receivers only had one monitor. Two tuning meters a mic input and THD of 0.3% made for a nice unit.
Got my SX- 650 in 1978 at Crazy Eddie's in NYC. When I added a pair of Ohm Acoustics Model L speakers my Bay Ridge, Brooklyn apartment really came alive, WOW. Enough output to impress if not annoy the neighbors!
Don't be fooled by its age, the SX- 650 is still a formidable unit. If you don't agree check out the prices it commands on E-bay. Not my main amp anymore, but there's nothing to apologize for with the SX- 650. Thanks for letting me rant.
